Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1843 edition. Excerpt: ... "Stay, stay, Louise--don't run away from me. I thought by my aunt's delay that she was sending you off, but after escaping from a host of visiters, and astonishing the world by such an early appearance, I must not lose my reward. I must see you, and talk with you." While she spoke, Henriette had taken Louise by the hand, and leading her back to her ottoman, bade her seat herself, for that she should hold her captive for one hour at least; and this was done with such a pretty air of wilful determination, that the Duchesse, though half vexed to have her plans for Louise thus counteracted, saw it would be useless to resist her. "And now, ma tante, pray smooth your brow, and look very gracious, for having carried my own point--always, you know, the first thing with me--I have a petition from another to prefer. The suiter stands shivering at your door, waiting with all the impatience in the world for your kind Entrez. Do not look so alarmed--it is only Auguste." "Only Auguste--that amuses me: only Auguste--the fastidious Auguste. Indeed, Henriette, I cannot let him see Louise in that frightful dress. I shall have her caricatured before she is seen." "Caricatured! I never saw her look lovelier; if I were only half as beautiful, I would bid defiance to all fashion, and wear just what I liked. You still shake your head 1 Well, you must give him your denial yourself, for he will never believe me that you deny him permission to see the cousin about whom he has been raving ever since--but here he is himself, with or without permission." Auguste Valancour, slowly opening the door, stood with it a moment in his hand before entering, while he said, "Ah, selfish Henriette! I knew you had forgotten me, but I forgive your neglect for the sake of its fair...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.

Book excerpt: "Delving into Karl Marx's central works as well as his natural scientific notebooks, published only recently and still being translated, [the author] argues that Karl Marx actually saw the environment crisis embedded in captialism. [The book] shows us that Marx has given us more than we once thought, that we can now come closer to finishing Marx's critique, and to building a sustainable ecosocialist world."--Page [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: Cyberspace, the cyborg and cyberpunk have given feminists new imaginative possibilities for thinking about embodiment and identity in relation to technology. This is the first anthology of the key essays on these potent metaphors. Divided into three sections (Technology, Embodiment and Cyberspace; Cybersubjects: Cyborgs and Cyberpunks; Cyborg Futures), the book addresses different aspects of the human-technology interface. The extensive introduction surveys the ways cyborg and cyberspace metaphors have been used in relation to current critical theory and indicates the context for the specific essays. This is an invaluable guide for students studying any aspects of contemporary theory and culture.* Brings together in a unique collection the work of key authors in feminist and cyber theory* Demonstrates the wide range of contemporary critical work* Challenges constructions of gender, race and class* An extensive introduction surveys the ways cyborg and cyberspace metaphors have been used in relation to current critical theory* Brief section introductions indicate the context for the specific essays

Forsythe displays his impressive ability to demonstrate to what extent and why the tradition that dominates the extant historical narratives is not credible."—Kurt Raaflaub, author of The Discovery of Freedom in Ancient Greece "An excellent synthetic treatment of early Roman history found in both modern literary and archaeological materials."—Richard Mitchell, author of Patricians and Plebeians
