Book Synopsis Activist Planning Case Studies 1990-2020 by : Tore Sager
Download or read book Activist Planning Case Studies 1990-2020 written by Tore Sager and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activist planning shows how communities, neighbourhoods and social movements use their own alternative spatial planning to oppose interventions from the government. This book is a systematic overview of scholarly reported activist planning cases. It includes descriptions of the various kinds of activist planning and contains a comprehensive bibliography of academic publications related to the 164 cases. The book informs the planning community what activist planning is in practice, and offers a classification scheme where all reported cases fit in. This text is needed because no comprehensive collection of activist planning cases exists, nor does a classification comprising all types of activist planning. There is, to date, no database of cases and associated literature providing researchers and students with an authoritative source. The search for cases in the English language has been global, and the cases and 122 supplementary examples are sorted by country and world region ‒ Australasia, Europe, the Global South and North America.

Book Synopsis All Culture is Local by : Lisa Andersen
Download or read book All Culture is Local written by Lisa Andersen and published by UTS ePRESS. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome from a five year Australian Research Council funded research project, CAMRA cultural asset mapping in regional Australia project (LP0882238). Over this time four universities, four local governments, and peak regional, state and federal agencies sought to develop knowledge that would enable better informed planning for arts and cultural development in rural and regional communities. Over the course of the project, it became evident that rural-regional local government staff and cultural decision makers need better place-specific data and are keen to learn from the experiences of other local governments to inform their own planning. This book is CAMRA’s response to that need and includes 17 case studies on good practice in (1) Cultural Mapping and Data Collection and (2) Cultural Planning. The case studies have been written with the aim of making ideas and processes transferrable for any regional local authority - with the resource implications made clear – and are ordered using Australian Standard Geographical Classification-Remoteness Areas for local government area.

Book Synopsis Whiteness and Social Change by : Colin Salter
Download or read book Whiteness and Social Change written by Colin Salter and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whiteness and Social Change provides a comparative engagement with whiteness – the unearned and at times unmarked social-structural privilege afforded to some at the expense of others – in contemporary Australia and Canada. Through a detailed examination of high profile community campaigns at Sandon Point (New South Wales, Australia) and the Red Hill Creek valley (Ontario, Canada) – situated alongside an analysis of white interpretations of the 1966 Wave Hill walkout (Northern Territory, Australia) – the actions of broader communities supporting First Peoples struggles expose whiteness as manifesting itself irrespective of intent. Existing scholarship in sociology, science studies, political theory and critical whiteness studies are drawn on to identify means through which whiteness can be destabilised. The outcome is an identification of how collaborative struggle and the politics of experience produce moments of cognitive dissonance amongst white supporters. These moments are transformative, lay foundations for respect and recognition, and the move towards a fair and just society.

Book Synopsis Clarence Valley Aboriginal Heritage Study by : Ngaire Richards
Download or read book Clarence Valley Aboriginal Heritage Study written by Ngaire Richards and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Museum Consulting (AM Consulting) was commissioned by Clarence Valley Council (Council) to prepare an Aboriginal Heritage Study for the Clarence Valley Local Government Area (LGA). The heritage study will inform future management of Aboriginal cultural heritage within the existing relevant New South Wales (NSW) and Commonwealth Statutory frameworks. The aim of this Study is to identify places of significance, record those places (if appropriate), and develop recommendations for their management and conservation, which will assist Council to develop strategies to manage Aboriginal sites and places and develop a protocol for ongoing Aboriginal community liaison. Consultation with local Aboriginal community members was undertaken to ensure that their views and opinions were included in the identification and recording of any objects or places of Aboriginal cultural or archaeological significance within the study area. A summary of the Aboriginal consultation that has occurred is provided in Section 3. The Clarence Valley Aboriginal community would prefer not to have detailed information about Aboriginal site locations included in a publically available document. It was therefore understood that not all heritage sites should be mapped or identified in detail, but that general areas that are important to the community, or where archaeological sites are present, should be indicated. However, historical research and consultation with the local Aboriginal community indicated that there are areas of Aboriginal heritage sensitivity within the LGA that Council should be made aware of when considering applications for development. These areas of Aboriginal heritage sensitivity are summarised in Section 5. The environmental planning instrument that protects Aboriginal heritage in the Clarence Valley LGA is the Clarence Valley Local Environmental Plan 2011. This planning instrument requires Council to consider the impact of proposed development on known or potential Aboriginal heritage places and archaeological sites within the Clarence Valley LGA A number of recommendations to Council are provided in Section 6, and are summarised as follows: In considering applications for development, Council should determine whether an Aboriginal Heritage Assessment has been undertaken, and whether there is any potential for an Aboriginal object, place or site to be affected by the development. If no such assessment has been undertaken by the proponent, and there is reasonable potential for an Aboriginal object, place, site or area to be affected, then Council should request that an Aboriginal Heritage Assessment be undertaken, in consultation with the local Aboriginal community in accordance with OEH's Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010, before development consent is issued. Any Development Application (DA) which proposes harm to an Aboriginal object or Aboriginal place must be dealt with as Integrated Development under Section 91 of the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979. Such applications must be forwarded to OEH to determine whether the Director General of OEH is prepared to issue an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit. Ultimately the DA cannot be approved by Council without the approval of OEH, if an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit is required to enable the development to proceed. It is recommended that an Aboriginal Heritage Assessment be undertaken, in consultation with the local Aboriginal community in accordance with OEH's Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010, in cases of Integrated Development. Where a proposed development area includes archaeologically sensitive landforms, it is recommended that Council should require a due diligence process for assessing potential harm to Aboriginal objects to be undertaken, in accordance with the Due Diligence Code of Practice for the Protection of Aboriginal Objects in New South Wales (DECCW.

Download or read book The Politics of Urban Cultural Policy written by Carl Grodach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Urban Cultural Policy brings together a range of international experts to critically analyze the ways that governmental actors and non-governmental entities attempt to influence the production and implementation of urban policies directed at the arts, culture, and creative activity. Presenting a global set of case studies that span five continents and 22 cities, the essays in this book advance our understanding of how the dynamic interplay between economic and political context, institutional arrangements, and social networks affect urban cultural policy-making and the ways that these policies impact urban development and influence urban governance. The volume comparatively studies urban cultural policy-making in a diverse set of contexts, analyzes the positive and negative outcomes of policy for different constituencies, and identifies the most effective policy directions, emerging political challenges, and most promising opportunities for building effective cultural policy coalitions. The volume provides a comprehensive and in-depth engagement with the political process of urban cultural policy and urban development studies around the world. It will be of interest to students and researchers interested in urban planning, urban studies and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Music and Heritage by : Liam Maloney
Download or read book Music and Heritage written by Liam Maloney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music and Heritage provides new thinking about the diverse ways people engage with heritage. By exploring the relationships that exist between music, place and identity, the book illustrates how people form attachments to place and how such attachments are represented by sound and music-making. Presenting case studies and perspectives from across a range of genres, the volume argues that combining music with heritage provides an alternative and productive opportunity to think about heritage values and place attachment. Contributions to this edited collection use a diversity of methods, perspectives, cues and genres to reflect critically on issues related to these and other interconnections in ways that encourage new thinking about the character, meaning and purpose of cultural heritage, and the various ways in which people can interact with it through sound – thus re-encountering the supposedly familiar world around them. Taking heritage studies, musicology and place-making research in new directions, Music and Heritage will be of interest to academics and students engaged in the study of heritage, history, music, geography and anthropology. It will also be relevant to those with an interest in how music relates to place-making and place attachment, as well as to practitioners and policymakers working in the planning, design and creative sectors.

Pearson and Sullivan survey key issues currently being debated in the field and in the wider community and discuss their implications for heritage management.
