Book Synopsis Key to the Ancient Parish Registers of England & Wales by : Arthur Meredyth Burke
Download or read book Key to the Ancient Parish Registers of England & Wales written by Arthur Meredyth Burke and published by Genealogical Publishing Company. This book was released on 1908 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the Ancient Parish Registers of England and Wales In the performance of my task no available source of information has been unexplored, and it is hoped that the Annotated Index, which shows at a glance the date of the earliest entry in every Parish Register in England and Wales, and in which every transcript that has been printed is noted, will prove by its usefulness that my labours have not been in vain. I am only too conscious of the shortcomings of this publication, but can at least plead that I have honestly endeavoured, at a sacrifice of much time and labour, to compile a work which may be both of some historical interest and of some real value to the genealogist. Book Synopsis Child Workers in England, 1780–1820 by : Katrina Honeyman
Download or read book Child Workers in England, 1780–1820 written by Katrina Honeyman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of child workers was widespread in textile manufacturing by the late eighteenth century. A particularly vital supply of child workers was via the parish apprenticeship trade, whereby pauper children could move from the 'care' of poor law officialdom to the 'care' of early industrial textile entrepreneurs. This study is the first to examine in detail both the process and experience of parish factory apprenticeship, and to illuminate the role played by children in early industrial expansion. It challenges prevailing notions of exploitation which permeate historical discussion of the early labour force and questions both the readiness with which parishes 'offloaded' large numbers of their poor children to distant factories, and the harsh discipline assumed to have been universal among early factory masters. Finally the author explores the way in which parish apprentices were used to construct a gendered labour force. Dr Honeyman's book is a major contribution to studies in child labour and to the broader social, economic, and business history of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries.

Book Synopsis Three Score Years and Ten: or More? by : Trevor James Cooper
Download or read book Three Score Years and Ten: or More? written by Trevor James Cooper and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Score Years and Ten: Or More? delves into the enduring fascination with individuals who live beyond 100 years. The intrigue centres not only on the accomplishment itself but also on the mysteries of how and why these people achieve such remarkable longevity. This research shifts its focus from contemporary centenarians, whose ages can be more reliably verified due to improved record-keeping, to an earlier era marked by less clear historical records. It investigates the genesis of this interest and the emergence of what could be termed a ‘cult of centenarianism.’ During this period, claims of extreme old age sparked debates between believers and sceptics, creating a cultural divide. The book also examines the significant role media played in this phenomenon. The portrayal and promotion of centenarians by the media of the time laid the groundwork for themes explored in this book, contributing to the ongoing public intrigue surrounding individuals of advanced age.
