Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a sleepy village, set in the backdrop of early 20th century undivided Punjab, takes the reader through the twists and turns of the author's life. It graphically describes the events where fears and falsity land various characters in unsavoury situations and how they bear the fruits of their karma. There is Parmanand, who left the sanctuary of a safe but vacuous existence, in search of a better but unfathomed life to turn into a neurotic teacher. There is Indro, who had to carry the cross of a tedious life to lose vitality in a wasting physiology. It is an account of Devki, who became the mother of sons older than herself and also suffered early widowhood. There is a near death experience of a sensitive child and also of certain death of a new born, one brought about by complex circumstances. There is turmoil and trauma on the eve of Independence. There is Congress, there is Muslim League and there is RSS. There is a painful incidence of personal incarcination engendered by misconceived sense of sacrifice. With an uncanny eye for detail, the author delineates various lives to analyse if the Law of Karma is, indeed, rooted in actions sown as seeds to bring forth fruits, now or hereafter. Without getting involved with the playfulness of his wandering mind, he endeavours to study if there is some order underneath a seeming chaotic existence. In the process, he looks at the real, imperfect, flawed, quirky, weird, beautiful and magical side of the dramatis personae to take the first steps towards Self realization.

Book excerpt: Over a dozen years and 156 individual entries, you're able to witness the traversals of a single wandering mind, for better and for worse. Witness a belief in God gradually transform into atheism. Watch as a blissfully romantic view of love gives way to heartbreak. There's a coping with death of a friend, and the struggles with the thoughts of one's own death. There's a never-ending failure to understand why women are the way they are. But through it all, the theme remains the same: it's the wonders of life that allows our minds to wander.

Michael Corballis doesn't think so, and with [this book], he shows us why, rehabilitating woolgathering and revealing its ... useful effects. Drawing on the latest research from cognitive science and evolutionary biology, Corballis [posits that] mind-wandering not only frees us from moment-to-moment drudgery, but also from the limitations of our immediate selves"--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: Creativity and the Wandering Mind: Spontaneous and Controlled Cognition summarizes research on the impact of mind wandering and cognitive control on creativity, including imagination, fantasy and play. Most coverage in this area has either focused on the negative consequences of mind wandering on focused problem solving or the positive effect of mindfulness, but not on the positive consequences of mind wandering. This volume bridges that gap. Research indicates that most people experience mind wandering during a large percentage of their waking time, and that it is a baseline default mode of brain function during the awake but resting state. This volume explores the different kinds of mind wandering and its positive impact on imagination, play, problem-solving, and creative production. - Discusses spontaneous and controlled processes in creativity - Examines the relationship between mind wandering, consciousness, and imagination - Reviews research on problem-solving, imagination, play, and learning - Highlights the positive impact of mind wandering on creative thought and output

Book excerpt: The Mind Illuminated is a comprehensive, accessible and - above all - effective book on meditation, providing a nuts-and-bolts stage-based system that helps all levels of meditators establish and deepen their practice. Providing step-by-step guidance for every stage of the meditation path, this uniquely comprehensive guide for a Western audience combines the wisdom from the teachings of the Buddha with the latest research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Clear and friendly, this in-depth practice manual builds on the nine-stage model of meditation originally articulated by the ancient Indian sage Asanga, crystallizing the entire meditative journey into 10 clearly-defined stages. The book also introduces a new and fascinating model of how the mind works, and uses illustrations and charts to help the reader work through each stage. This manual is an essential read for the beginner to the seasoned veteran of meditation.

Sorrow and suffering are the products of mind which keeps weaving illusory and imaginary world at its own as it happens during the dream. Sorrow and sufferings are dissolved when one goes beyond mind through enriching consciousness, free of contents. Mind remains restless, disturbed and noisy when it is loaded with information and worldly knowledge. Non desiring and non wavering mind is required for total transformation to experience the joy and ecstasy of your divine nature. Living a self esteemed life empowers man with will, wisdom, self-confidence, inner power, purity, love, peace, joy, enthusiasm and compassion so that man strives without seeking and struggles without greed for a peaceful and harmonious living bringing order and discipline in the world, dissolving clash and conflict. This is the essence of ancient wisdom and an eternal thought which transformed man to go beyond human sorrows and sufferings. Transforming oneself is the greatest effort but most rewarding and paying. This wisdom has come to us from trustworthy and enlightened souls of the past. It had happened to them through total trust in their true being (divinity) which they experienced through testing it from within their own self and later tasted it by living life that way with total silence, joy and peace. You should also trust, test and taste.
