Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who are kind to Stanley Young call him an obsessive compulsive perfectionist who cares about the little details of life. They would point out that reliability and punctuality, together with consistency and uniformity, are qualities which Stanley displays in abundance. They could point to a system of disciplined self-improvement that Stanley has cultivated within his life - helping him to continually broaden his horizons. Those who are unkind to Stanley Young would call him an aggressive, compulsive, unbalanced, self-centred, emotionally retarded psychopath given to bouts of violence, but the latter rarely say such things to his face. Stanley Young is planning a murder - not just any murder - the perfect murder. He lives and works at Pottergate - a prestigious, expensive and secluded retreat for people whose rich parents consider that they cannot function in the real world. Stanley is tasked with recording the emotional and social progress of each of these guests. In his humble opinion he considers himself to do a fine job in dealing with the numerous and idiotic personalities who also live at Pottergate, despite their repeated attempts to goad and enrage him. Stanley has spent years perfecting a carefully constructed plan. Every angle has been considered and every eventuality pondered. One ordinary Friday, Stanley, under the guise of carrying out his normal routine of inspection and interviews, carefully plants the seeds of deception and prepares the necessary tools to carry out his nefarious scheme. But will he have the guts to go through with it?

Book excerpt: Chevalier wrote a very selective and successful memoir, but this book is a probing biography of the man, looking closely at the shrewd, obsessive and complex man behind the caricature French image. As the uncontested king of showbusiness for most of the 20th century, he was already a rising star before World War I. This biography looks at his career as well as the women who played an important part in his life - from the great music hall star, Mistinguett, to Marlene Dietrich and Kay Francis. Chevalier died in 1967, aged 85.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lieutenant Uhura took her place on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek, the actress Nichelle Nichols went where no African American woman had ever gone before. Yet several decades passed before many other black women began playing significant roles in speculative (i.e., science fiction, fantasy, and horror) film and television—a troubling omission, given that these genres offer significant opportunities for reinventing social constructs such as race, gender, and class. Challenging cinema’s history of stereotyping or erasing black women on-screen, Where No Black Woman Has Gone Before showcases twenty-first-century examples that portray them as central figures of action and agency. Writing for fans as well as scholars, Diana Adesola Mafe looks at representations of black womanhood and girlhood in American and British speculative film and television, including 28 Days Later, AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Children of Men, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Firefly, and Doctor Who: Series 3. Each of these has a subversive black female character in its main cast, and Mafe draws on critical race, postcolonial, and gender theories to explore each film and show, placing the black female characters at the center of the analysis and demonstrating their agency. The first full study of black female characters in speculative film and television, Where No Black Woman Has Gone Before shows why heroines such as Lex in AVP and Zoë in Firefly are inspiring a generation of fans, just as Uhura did.

Book excerpt: For the few hundred television viewers in 1946, a special treat on the broadcast schedule was the variety show called Hour Glass. It was the first TV program to go beyond talking heads, cooking demonstrations, and sporting events, featuring instead dancers, comics, singers, and long commercials for its sponsor, Chase and Sanborn coffee. Within two years, another variety show, Texaco Star Theatre, became the first true television hit and would be credited with the sales of thousands of television sets. The variety show formula was a staple of television in its first 30 years, in part because it lent itself to a medium where everything had to be live and preferably inside a studio. Most of the early television stars--including Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, Dinah Shore, and Arthur Godfrey--rose to prominence through weekly variety shows. In the 1960s, major stars such as Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Danny Kaye were hosting variety shows. By the 1970s, the format was giving way to sitcoms and dramas, but pop music stars Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and Donny and Marie Osmond hosted some of the last of the species. This book details 57 variety shows from the 1940s through the 1990s. A history of each show is first provided, followed by a brief look at each episode. Air date, guest stars, sketches performed, and a listing of songs featured are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is the android Data like Shakespeare's character Hamlet? Is the vengeful Khan (original series episode "Space Seed" and the film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) an echo of Captain Ahab in Moby Dick? The links between Star Trek and literature are vast: themes and characters that reflect those in classic literature; characters that quote literature in their dialog; and an enormous body of nonfiction books, novels, articles that have grown from the saga. Finally, like literature, Star Trek seeks to help in the human endeavor of understanding the world and its place in the universe. This book explores all of those connections. The Next Generation's Captain Picard frequently quotes Shakespeare. Captain Janeway from Voyager reenacts literature in holodeck novels. Jake Sisko, son of Deep Space Nine's Commander Benjamin Sisko, becomes an award-winning writer. Beginning with Captain James T. Kirk's first appearance in the original series, then continuing through four subsequent series and ten movies, this book draws parallels between Star Trek stories and literary classics such as Hamlet, Paradise Lost, Ulysses, Dracula, and the New Testament, and works by the likes of Booker T. Washington, Edgar Allan Poe and William Shakespeare. Appendices list the literary works discussed and the episodes and movies mentioned, each giving the chapters where references can be found.
