Book excerpt: From Ovid’s Lycaon to Professor Lupin, from Teen Wolf to An American Werewolf in Paris, the lycanthrope, or werewolf, comes to us frequently on the page and the silver screen. These interpretations often display lycanthropy as a curse, with the afflicted person becoming an uncontrollable, feral beast during every full moon. But this is just one version of the werewolf—its origins can be traced back thousands of years to early prehistory, and everything from Iron Age bog bodies and Roman gods to people such as Joan of Arc, Adolf Hitler, and Sigmund Freud feature in its story. Exploring the role of this odd assortment of ideas and people in the myth, The White Devil tracks the development of the werewolf from its birth to the present day, seeking to understand why the wolf curse continues to hold a firm grip on the modern imagination. Combining early death and burial rites, mythology, folklore, archaeological evidence, and local superstitions, Matthew Beresford explains that the werewolf has long been present in the beliefs and mythology of the many cultures of Europe. He examines prehistoric wolf cults, the use of the wolf as a symbol of ancient Rome, medieval werewolf executions, and the eradication of wolves by authorities in England during the Anglo-Saxon period. He also surveys werewolf trials, medical explanations, and alleged sightings, as well as the instances in which lycanthropes appear in literature and film. With sixty illustrations of these often terrifying—but sometimes noble—beasts, The White Deviloffers a new understanding of the survival of the werewolf in European culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mythic Greek Sphinx—part lion, woman, and eagle—has endured erosion for five thousand years. She is a symbol of wisdom and mystery and my personal symbol of an invisible, toxic plague that continues to seep into Mother Earth. In ancient Greece, she was a symbol of an enigmatic death demon. If no traveler could answer her riddle, he or she was strangled. Today she represents civilization's pollution time bomb that Mother Earth may soon be unable to defuse. In Neolithic times (Stone Age), the first humans painted with ochre earth and animal blood on cave walls to capture the animal's spirit, mana. The tribe's survival depended on the hunter's kill. Mother Earth was revered. She nourished man, beast, and spirit. Through ritual offerings, humans created the necessary structure to reduce chaos and allowed them to survive and flourish. One Green Thumb and Nine Sticky Fingers is both a serious and humorous guide that highlights some of the ancient sacred rituals and cycles and will inspire both novice and expert gardeners of today. Natural cycles are the spine and theme of One Green Thumb. This book reminds my readers that to survive, modern man must live in balance with plants and animals. This book will inspire individuals and families who want to learn how to understand and grow organic vegetables and flowers, enjoy the protection and privacy of trees, and promote a more balanced lifestyle for themselves and humanity. Mother Nature's rhythmic cycles are signposts that guide the reader through mankind's eons of trial and error with her gifts: the ability to recognize wild weeds as edible herbs as well as to plant and harvest healthy organic plants. The reader learns here to follow the simplest rules of horticulture to maintain humans', animals', and insects' life cycle integrity. We can learn to re-educate ourselves to respect all creatures right to life without poisoning ourselves with toxic chemicals. With inspiration and education, today's gardeners will contribute toward a more harmonious and productive future environment for humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal has been written about the history of witchcraft, but much of what has been written is unreliable, exaggerated, or inaccurate. This problem is especially acute in regard to modern witchcraft, or Wicca, and its supposed connections to historical witchcraft in medieval and early modern Europe. The A to Z of Witchcraft provides a reliable reference source for both academics and general readers interested in the actual historical development of witchcraft in the western world. The focus of the dictionary is on Western Europe during the late-medieval and early modern periods, when the specific idea of diabolical witchcraft developed and when the so-called 'great witch-hunts' occurred. Entries are also provided that deal with magic and witchcraft in the earlier Christian period and classical antiquity, as well as with the lingering belief in witchcraft in the modern world, and with the development of the modern, neo-pagan religion of witchcraft, also known as Wicca. For comparative purposes, some entries have been provided that deal with aspects and systems of magic found in other parts of the world that seem to bear some relation to the idea of witchcraft as it developed in Christian Europe. The regions dealt with are mainly Africa, along with such New-World practices as Voodoo and Santeria. Entries in the dictionary cover important people in the history of witchcraft, from the medieval inquisitors and early modern magistrates who developed the stereotype of the historical witch to the modern individuals who have developed the religion of Wicca. Also included are legal terms and concepts important to the prosecution of the supposed crime of witchcraft, and religious and theological concepts pertaining to the demonic elements that came to be associated with witchcraft, as well as more popular beliefs and aspects of common folklore and mythology that became attached to the developing idea of witchcraft. Geographic entries are also included, discussing the scope of witch-hunting in various regions of Europe and the world, and describing specific examples of major witch-hunts such as those that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts.
