Book Synopsis Magic, Monsters, and Make-Believe Heroes by : Douglas E. Cowan
Download or read book Magic, Monsters, and Make-Believe Heroes written by Douglas E. Cowan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magic, Monsters, and Make-Believe Heroes looks at fantasy film, television, and participative culture as evidence of our ongoing need for a mythic vision—for stories larger than ourselves into which we write ourselves and through which we can become the heroes of our own story. Why do we tell and retell the same stories over and over when we know they can’t possibly be true? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not because pop culture has run out of good ideas. Rather, it is precisely because these stories are so fantastic, some resonating so deeply that we elevate them to the status of religion. Illuminating everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dungeons and Dragons, and from Drunken Master to Mad Max, Douglas E. Cowan offers a modern manifesto for why and how mythology remains a vital force today.
Book Synopsis The Byronic Hero in Film, Fiction, and Television by : Atara Stein
Download or read book The Byronic Hero in Film, Fiction, and Television written by Atara Stein and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Byronic Hero in Film, Fiction, and Television bridges nineteenth- and twentieth-century studies in pursuit of an ambitious, antisocial, arrogant, and aggressively individualistic mode of hero from his inception in Byron’s Manfred, Childe Harold, and Cain, through his incarnations as the protagonists of Westerns, action films, space odysseys, vampire novels, neo-Gothic comics, and sci-fi television. Such a hero exhibits supernatural abilities, adherence to a personal moral code, ineptitude at human interaction (muddled even further by self-absorbed egotism), and an ingrained defiance of oppressive authority. He is typically an outlaw, most certainly an outcast or outsider, and more often than not, he is a he. Given his superhuman status, this hero offers no potential for sympathetic identification from his audience. At best, he provides an outlet for vicarious expressions of power and independence. While audiences may not seek to emulate the Byronic hero, Stein notes that he desires to emulate them; recent texts plot to “rehumanize” the hero or to voice through him approbation and admiration of ordinary human values and experiences. Tracing the influence of Lord Byron’s Manfred as outcast hero on a pantheon of his contemporary progenies—including characters from Pale Rider, Unforgiven, The Terminator, Alien, The Crow, Sandman, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Angel—Atara Stein tempers her academic acumen with the insights of a devoted aficionado in this first comprehensive study of the Romantic hero type and his modern kindred. Atara Stein was a professor of English at California State University, Fullerton. Her articles on the development of the Byronic hero have appeared in Popular Culture Review, Romantic Circles Praxis Series, Genders, and Philological Quarterly.

Book Synopsis Investigating Charmed by : Stan Beeler
Download or read book Investigating Charmed written by Stan Beeler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-11-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, the series "Charmed", the story created by Constance M. Burge of three sisters who discover that they are powerful witches, first aired on the WB network. The series ran for eight series and into top-rating DVDs, and has established a continuing presence as cult TV. The world of "Charmed" is distinctively one of female solidarity, with sisters Piper, Prudence, Phoebe and, with the death of Pru, half-sister Paige making up the 'power of three'. In their crusade against the demonic population of their home city of San Francisco, the Halliwell sisters have also inherited their powers and "The Book of Shadows" through the female line. The expert contributors to "Investigating 'Charmed'", all of them fans of the show, explore its nature as ground breaking TV. They debate the status of "Charmed" as third wave feminist narrative, as well as its upturning of notions of sexuality, and its creation of alternative forms of family life. The San Francisco setting is explored as is "Charmed's" brand of witchcraft and fantasy, its mythological antecedents and female heroes. Looking also at the fans' relationship to the show, as well as its novelizations, fan fiction and blogs, the book on this fantastic magical show concludes with a complete Episode Guide.
Book Synopsis Rescuing Women from American Mythology by : Michael A. Solis
Download or read book Rescuing Women from American Mythology written by Michael A. Solis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores American mythology through the lens of comic books and superheroes, specifically exploring the subject from an historical perspective in order to capture the origins of sexism and misogyny, as found in the comic book stories that have shaped so many young people and their attitudes. It provides a detailed analysis of America’s inextricable relationship with sexist institutions, specific historical events, and cultural attitudes, all of which are captured by, and perpetuated, in comic books, TV, film, and advertising. The implicit argument this book makes is that sexism and misogyny are not the product of nefarious individuals with overt agendas; instead, sexism and misogyny are products of our mythology and the associated archetypal components that shape a fabricated design of the world, a design shaped by men and unwittingly agreed to by women, thus, perpetuating a male-dominated mythological, religious, and historical social structure.
