Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information and knowledge have fundamentally transformed the way business and social institutions work. Knowledge management promises concepts and instruments that help organizations to provide an environment supportive of knowledge generation, sharing and application. Information and communication technology (ICT) is often regarded as the enabler for the effective and especially the efficient implementation of knowledge management. The book presents an almost encyclopedic treatise of the many important facets, concepts and theories that have influenced knowledge management and integrates them into a general knowledge management framework consisting of strategy, organization, systems and economics. The book also contains the state of practice of knowledge management on the basis of a comprehensive empirical study, and concludes with four scenarios of the successful application of ICT in knowledge management initiatives.

Book Synopsis Distance, Rating Systems and Enterprise Finance by : Franz Flögel
Download or read book Distance, Rating Systems and Enterprise Finance written by Franz Flögel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the credit crunch during the global financial crisis of 2007–2008, many have called for the re-establishment of regional banks in the UK and elsewhere. In this context, Germany’s regional banking system, with its more than 1,400 small and regional savings banks and cooperative banks, is viewed as a role model in the financing of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, in line with the ‘death of distance’ debate, the universal application of ICT-based scoring and rating systems potentially obviates the necessity for proximity to reduce information asymmetries between banks and SMEs, calling into question the key advantage of regional banks. Utilising novel ethnographic findings from full-time participant observation and interviews, this book presents intimate insights into regional savings banks and compares their SME lending practices with large, nationwide-operating commercial banks in Germany. The ethnographic insights are contextualised by concise description of the three-pillar German banking system, covering bank regulation, structural and geographical developments, and enterprise finance. Furthermore, the book advances an original theoretical approach that combines classical banking theories with insights from social studies of finance on the (ontological) foundation of new realism. Ethnographic findings reveal varying distances of credit granting depending on the rating results, i.e. large banks allocate considerable credit-granting authority to local staff and therefore challenge the proximity advantages of regional banks. Nevertheless, by presenting case studies of lending to SMEs, the book demonstrates the ability of regional banks to capitalise on proximity when screening and monitoring financially distressed SMEs and explains why the suggestion that ICT can substitute for proximity in SME lending has to be rejected.

Book Synopsis Communities of Practice by : Etienne Wenger
Download or read book Communities of Practice written by Etienne Wenger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theory of learning that starts with the assumption that engagement in social practice is the fundamental process by which we get to know what we know and by which we become who we are. The primary unit of analysis of this process is neither the individual nor social institutions, but the informal 'communities of practice' that people form as they pursue shared enterprises over time. To give a social account of learning, the theory explores in a systematic way the intersection of issues of community, social practice, meaning, and identity. The result is a broad framework for thinking about learning as a process of social participation. This ambitious but thoroughly accessible framework has relevance for the practitioner as well as the theoretician, presented with all the breadth, depth, and rigor necessary to address such a complex and yet profoundly human topic.

Book Synopsis Digital Business Engineering by : Clemente Minonne
Download or read book Digital Business Engineering written by Clemente Minonne and published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Business Transformation, Digitalisation, Business Strategy, Business Process, Business Analysis, Business Architecture, Business Models This book serves practitioners as a guide to digital business engineering. It was consciously conceived and prepared from a methodological perspective, thereby avoiding a strongly "technological" approach, rather focusing on the presentation of methods and instruments. Its basis is a tried and tested framework model that can be understood as the ideal management cycle of digital business engineering. The control loop consists of goal-setting (Chapter 1: Setting a Business Strategy), implementation (Chapters 2–5), and success assessment (Chapter 6: Validating the Success of Business Transformation) and is located in an outer circuit. The operational implementation phases of digital business engineering are part of the inner cycle: Defining a Business Case (Chapter 2), Eliciting the Business Processes (Chapter 3), Deriving the Business Requirements (Chapter 4), and Transforming the Business Architecture (Chapter 5). The book follows a didactic structure: Each chapter includes learning objectives, summaries, and repetition questions with solutions that can help the reader to reassure themselves and strengthen their knowledge. Users who want to familiarise themselves with the field of digital business engineering thus have material at their disposal that is ideal for self-study. But these modules can also help experienced digital business engineers to deepen their knowledge in their organisation and to strengthen their overall methodological competence.

Book Synopsis Building Resilience to Natural Hazards in the Context of Climate Change by : Gérard Hutter
Download or read book Building Resilience to Natural Hazards in the Context of Climate Change written by Gérard Hutter and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban resilience and building resilience are “hot topics” of research and practice on sustainability in the context of climate change. The edited volume advances the “state of art” of urban resilience research through focusing on three important processes of building resilience: knowledge integration, implementation, and learning. In the volume, knowledge integration primarily refers to the combination of specialized knowledge domains (e.g., flood risk management and urban planning). Implementation refers to realized specific changes of the building stock and related green, blue and grey infrastructures at local level (e.g., for dealing with rising temperatures and heat waves at the neighborhood scale in cities). Learning requires moving beyond single projects and experiments of resilience to enhance sustainability at city and regional scale. The editors adopt an interdisciplinary approach to this volume of the Springer series on resilience. The volume includes contributions from civil engineering, physical geography, the social sciences, and urban planning.
