Auch die Personalentwicklung, die in den traditionellen Unternehmen einen wesentlichen Beitrag am Erfolg eines Unternehmens leistet, muss sich den gegenwärtigen ständigen Veränderungen anpassen und sich neu gestalten. Bisherige Personalentwicklungskonzepte halten dem Druck der Umgestaltung in wissensorientierte Unternehmen nicht mehr stand und müssen sich neu ausrichten. An die Personalentwicklung werden neue Anforderungen und Erwartungen gestellt. Im Zuge dessen dessen wird die Rolle der Personalentwicklung innerhalb eines Unternehmens neu definiert.
