Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisdom of the Rishis: Or Works of Pt; Guru Datta, M.A The works of Pandit Guru Datta Vidyarthi, M. A. undoubtedly occupy the foremost position in the whole range of Samajic literature that exists in English. In point of sublimity of thought, nobility of conception, beauty and gracefulness of style, breadth and comprehensiveness of vision and force and impressiveness of meaning, the works are simply unsurpassed. Pandit Guru Datta was one of those rare geniuses of whom any civilized country may justly be proud. He died while yet in his youth. His career of usefulness to the Arya Samaj was sadly brief. Being a man of extremely inquisitive and analyzing faculties, no religion except that of the Vedas could satisfy his profoundly philosophical and scientific mind. He accordingly enlisted himself under the banner of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, and evinced a great interest in the advancement of his Vedic mission. The truths of the Vedic Religion, however, did not strike a deep and permanent root in his mind till he had been brought, by the chance of unhappy circumstances, under the magnetising touch of that Great Yogi, Swami Dayananda Saraswati. When the great Rishi was lying seriously ill at Ajmere, he, along with myself, was deputed by the Lahore Arya Samaj to attend upon the Swamiji there. The dying scene of Swamiji, which he was fortunate enough to witness, gave a death-blow to his old cherished sceptic ideas, and inspired in him a spirit that has ever since immortalised his name. He saw, on the one hand, the dreadful disease giving rise to such excruciating pains that even the bravest and mightiest of men, having less insight into the realm of Spirit, would give way under its fearful and cruel onslaughts, and on the other, the Swami's calm, dignified, cheerful and brightened-up face, without the least indication of any sort of suffering or remorse. This singular scene threw a fascinating charm over him; how it affected him cannot be described in words, nor could the Pandit himself explain it. It appears to have taken entire possession of his soul, and transformed him into something far above the ordinary run of humanity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Haj to Utopia, Maia Ramnath tells the dramatic story of Ghadar, the Indian anticolonial movement that attempted overthrow of the British Empire. Founded by South Asian immigrants in California, Ghadar—which is translated as "mutiny"—quickly became a global presence in East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and East Africa. Ramnath brings this epic struggle to life as she traces Ghadar’s origins to the Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, its establishment of headquarters in Berkeley, California, and its fostering by anarchists in London, Paris, and Berlin. Linking Britain’s declaration of war on Germany in 1914 to Ghadar’s declaration of war on Britain, Ramnath vividly recounts how 8,000 rebels were deployed from around the world to take up the battle in Hindustan. Haj to Utopia demonstrates how far-flung freedom fighters managed to articulate a radical new world order out of seemingly contradictory ideas.

NAGARAJA RAO puts up a spirited defence for the study of Philosophy. Science in itself cannot give us a scheme of values and each one of us has his own view of the ends of life though he may not be able to support it by a learned metaphysics. Among the Hindus the values are conveyed through systems o Philosophy which are associated with the three great acaryas, Sahkara, Ramanuja and Madhva. Mr. NAGA RAJA RAO gives us here in simple and clear language the central features of the three systems. As an introduction to their detailed study this book will serve a valuable purpose. S. RADHAKRISHNAN Benares, 25 July, 1943. PREFACE This book was prepared by me as the Say a ji Rao Fellow of the University. But for the liberal aid and other facilities extended to me by the Government of Baroda, it would not have been possible for me to have got the book ready for publication. I am deeply grateful to His Highness for graciously allowing me to dedicate the volume to his grand-father, the late Maharaja of Baroda. In the preparation of the book I have drawn freely from the writings and speeches of my esteemed professor Sir S. RADHAKRISHNAN. For the chapter on Advaita I am deeply indebted to my late Professor S. S. Suryanarayana SASTRI, Reader in Indian Philosophy, University of Madras. My thanks are due to Mahamahopadhyaya Pandit A. Chinnaswami SASTRIAR for having helped me to read the original texts and works on Vedanta. My thanks are also due to my friend Mr. N. R. BHUVARAHAN, Sub-Editor, Indian Express, Madras, and Dr. C. Narayana MENON of the English Department of the Benares Hindu University for having looked through the proofs and made valuable suggestions. I owe the index to Mr. C. G. VISVANATHAN of the Benares Hindu University Library. My special thanks are due to the authorities of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for having consented to publish this book in these hard and difficult times. The Director and the staff of the Bhavan have helped me considerably in getting the book through the press. My thanks are also due to the editors of the various periodicals for permitting me to use the material that first appeared as articles in their pages and especially to Srimati Sophia WADIA, Editor of the Aryan Path for her help and suggestions in the preparation of Chapter IV. Benares Hindu University, P, NAGARAJA RAO 10th August, 1943. J CHAPTER I Science and Philosophy We live in an age the intellectual environment of which is largely determined by science.
