Book Synopsis Thomas Aquinas on Faith, Hope, and Love by : Christopher Kaczor
Download or read book Thomas Aquinas on Faith, Hope, and Love written by Christopher Kaczor and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Aquinas on Faith, Hope, and Love is designed to make as easy as possible a first reading of key passages from the Summa theologiae. This book contains selections from the Summa that are most influential, most important, or likely to be most interesting to the contemporary reader. The text of the Summa itself is edited and arranged for beginners. Each article begins with Thomas’s answers to the question at hand and then goes to the first objection, followed by the reply to the first objection, the second objection and its reply, and so on. This arrangement provides a greater accessibility and ease in following the argument. Below the text, copious footnotes illuminate the text as a professor in the classroom might. Some notes provide historical background to figures that Thomas presupposes his reader will know such as Gratian, Dionysius, and Lombard. Other notes offer doctrinal summaries of other parts of the Summa that illuminate what Thomas says about faith, hope, or love. Thomas had an enormous influence on theologians, Church councils, and popes after his time, so some footnotes examine this influence. Thomas drew heavily on sources of wisdom before him, so other footnotes summarize the teachings of earlier authors, such as Aristotle and Augustine. This book also contains introductory essays on the Summa, on faith, on hope, and on love, which provide an overview to situate the reader and place treatment of the theological virtues in its larger context of the Summa. For those who have never read Thomas Aquinas on faith, hope, and love (and for those who teach them), this book provides ready access to the wisdom of the Angelic doctor.
Book Synopsis The Human Wisdom of St. Thomas by : Josef Pieper
Download or read book The Human Wisdom of St. Thomas written by Josef Pieper and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Josef Pieper has attached no commentary to the texts brought together in this breviary of the philosophy of St. Thomas, preferring that the reader should encounter them, “on his own”. His work has been one of selection, in which he has sought to assemble such passages as will provide an introduction to the form and design of the whole Thomistic system. Yet he has so ordered his texts as to impress upon the reader a special feature of St. Thomas’s thought, what he calls its double aspect: St. Thomas sees the whole scheme of reality ordered and penetrable by reason; yet the mystery of Being itself remains: “The effort of human thought has not been able to track down the essence of a single gnat.” Josef Pieper, one of the most highly regarded Thomistic philosophers of the twentieth century, wrote numerous philosophical works including Leisure: The Basis of Culture, Guide to Thomas Aquinas, Only the Lover Sings and many more.

Download or read book The Ever-illuminating Wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas written by Wethersfield Institute and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wisdom of St. Thomas comes out of his philosophy and theology of the real -- one that connects the mind with the reality we ordinarily experience in our daily life. That wisdom, which he brought to a singular perfection, is his patrimony, a patrimony that the Magisterium of the Church has proposed over and over again as the surest guide if we are to be true to the Faith. Six distinguished Thomistic philosophers present their reflections on the unique insights of St. Thomas on philosophy and life, faith and reason, nature and grace, moral relativism, the rule of law, and the formation of the Catholic mind. You will come to a much greater understanding and appreciation of the wisdom of the Angelic Doctor from the insights of Peter Kreeft, Ralph McInerny, Marie George, John Haas, Russell Hittinger and Ronald McArthur.

Book Synopsis The Ecstasy of Love in the Thought of Thomas Aquinas by : Peter Kwasniewski
Download or read book The Ecstasy of Love in the Thought of Thomas Aquinas written by Peter Kwasniewski and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those interested in the concept of ecstasy would be forgiven for assuming that a sober scholastic like St. Thomas Aquinas had little place for the idea. Yet in this groundbreaking study, sure to refine our understanding of the Angelic Doctor, Peter Kwasniewski shows that St. Thomas contemplates the nature of ecstasy at key stages in the development of his thought and that it plays a crucial role in his doctrine of love. After a stimulating study of treatments of ecstasy in ancient philosophy, Sacred Scripture, and the medieval tradition prior to Aquinas, Kwasniewski finds that he can be seen as breathing new life into the concept. While his contemporary, St. Bonaventure, for example, tended to restrict ecstasy to the soul’s union with God, St. Thomas admitted the place of ecstasy in a variety of human activities. Furthermore, St. Thomas recognized that all love involves ecstatic transcendence, whether it be the creature’s self-oblation to the Creator, the reverence of an inferior for a superior, a superior’s generosity toward an inferior, or the mutual affection and help of equals joined in friendship. Love of persons for their own sake generates an ecstatic love in which the self is borne as a gift to another subject by sharing a common life aspiring to common goods. Kwasniewski also examines Aquinas on the question of whether or not God experiences ecstasy, and if so, in what ways. The Ecstasy of Love in the Thought of Thomas Aquinas makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the doctrine of love and to the interpretation of the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. It is more than an analysis of key texts; it is an illuminating guide to the grammar of ecstasy.
Book Synopsis Commentary on the Sentences, Book IV, 1-13 by : Thomas Aquinas
Download or read book Commentary on the Sentences, Book IV, 1-13 written by Thomas Aquinas and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sentences of Peter Lombard was the standard theological text from the twelfth through the fifteenth century (and even well beyond that in some places); producing a commentary on it was the equivalent of a doctoral dissertation, since it qualified the commentator to teach at the university level. Accordingly, all of the famous medieval scholastics, from Alexander of Hales to John Duns Scotus to William of Ockham, produced their own commentaries on the Sentences. Appearing for the first time in English, this volume features a bilingual Latin-English edition of Aquinas' first major work, the Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard.
