Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important contribution to the literature on contemporary American politics. Both methodologically and substantively, it breaks new ground.” —Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare When Scott Walker was elected Governor of Wisconsin, the state became the focus of debate about the appropriate role of government. In a time of rising inequality, Walker not only survived a bitterly contested recall, he was subsequently reelected. But why were the very people who would benefit from strong government services so vehemently against the idea of big government? With The Politics of Resentment, Katherine J. Cramer uncovers an oft-overlooked piece of the puzzle: rural political consciousness and the resentment of the “liberal elite.” Rural voters are distrustful that politicians will respect the distinct values of their communities and allocate a fair share of resources. What can look like disagreements about basic political principles are therefore actually rooted in something even more fundamental: who we are as people and how closely a candidate’s social identity matches our own. Taking a deep dive into Wisconsin’s political climate, Cramer illuminates the contours of rural consciousness, showing how place-based identities profoundly influence how people understand politics. The Politics of Resentment shows that rural resentment—no less than partisanship, race, or class—plays a major role in dividing America against itself.

An international group of women researchers from different academic backgrounds has gathered a rich set of data that provide fresh insights and raise many searching questions. We find here theoretical and practical perspectives linked to social, cultural, historical, literary and personal concerns that will appeal to and challenge a wide readership. A most remarkable volume on which the editors are to be congratulated." Professor Ursula King FRSA University of Bristol "In this welcome volume, women scholars draw out the many facets of identity as it is forged in the minds and bodies, and social, spiritual and business worlds of Gujaratis in India and the diaspora. It is rare indeed to find a book which discusses in such detail the impact of gender and ethnicity on the research process as well as on the lives of those studied." Book excerpt: The first full, annualized inventory of Wisconsin's forests was completed in 2004 after 6,478 forested plots were visited. There are more than 16.0 million acres of forest land in the Wisconsin, nearly half of the State's land area; 15.8 million acres meet the definition of timberland. The total area of both forest land and timberland continues an upward trend that began in the 1960s. Red maple, sugar maple, and quaking aspen are the most common trees with diameters at breast height greater than 5 inches; there are 298, 250, and 244 million trees of these species, respectively. Aspen is the most common forest type, followed by sugar maple/beech/yellow birch, and white oak/red oak/hickory. This report includes detailed information on forest attributes and health and on agents of change such as the introduction of nonnative plants, insects, and diseases and changing land-use patterns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Germany, Georg Iggers escaped from Nazism to the United States in his adolescence where he became one of the most distinguished scholars of European intellectual history and the history of historiography. In his lectures, delivered all over the world, and in his numerous books, translated into many languages, Georg Iggers has reshaped historiography and indefatigably promoted cross-cultural dialogue. This volume reflects the profound impact of his oeuvre. Among the contributors are leading intellectual historians but also younger scholars who explore the various cultural contexts of modern historiography, focusing on changes of European and American scholarship as well as non-Western historical writing in relation to developments in the West. Addressing these changes from a transnational perspective, this well-rounded volume offers an excellent introduction to the field, which will be of interest to both established historians and graduate students.
