Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of her mother’s suicide, one young woman recognizes the malleability of her reality. From her adolescence in the flat, hot Floridian landscape to a tectonic Missouri adulthood, a girl shaped by grief is compelled to create and manipulate her image of the world. As her dreams become indistinguishable from daily life, she begins to question memory, identity, and the function of love. Employing photography as its central metaphor, Darkroom tackles the tangled relationship between memory and mourning by exploring an artist’s impossible attempt to re-create the object of loss.

Book excerpt: Jim Daniels, in his first book of poems, draws upon his experiences in living and working in his native Detroit to present a start, realistic picture of urban, blue-collar life. Daniels, his brothers, his father, and his grandfather have all worked in the auto industry, and that background seeps into nearly all these poems. The first of the book's three sections sketches out this background, then moves into a neighborhood full of people whose lives are so linked to the ups and downs of the auto industry that they have to struggle to find their own lives; in "Still Lives in Detroit, #2," Daniels writes, "There's a man in this picture. / No one can find him." The second section contains the "Digger" poems, a series on the lives of a Detroit auto worker and his family which tries to capture the effects of the work on life outside the factory. Here, we listen to Digger think, dream, wander on psychological journeys while he moves through his routines, shoveling the snow, mowing the lawn, and so forth. In section three, the poems move into the workplace, whether that be a liquor store, a hamburger joint, or a factory. These poems, sometimes dark, sometimes humorous, concentrate on the efforts of workers to rise above the often depressing work of blue-collar or minimum-wage jobs, to salvage some pride and dignity. The poems in this book try to give a voice to those who are often shut out of poetry. They are important. These lives are important, and the poems, more than anything, say that.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catullus’ life was akin to pulp fiction. In Julius Caesar’s Rome, he engages in a stormy affair with a consul’s wife. He writes her passionate poems of love, hate, and jealousy. The consul, a vehement opponent of Caesar, dies under suspicious circumstances. The merry widow romances numerous young men. Catullus is drawn into politics and becomes a cocky critic of Caesar, writing poems that dub Julius a low-life pig and a pervert. Not surprisingly, soon after, no more is heard of Catullus. David Mulroy brings to life the witty, poignant, and brutally direct voice of a flesh-and-blood man, a young provincial in the Eternal City, reacting to real people and events in a Rome full of violent conflict among individuals marked by genius and megalomaniacal passions. Mulroy’s lively, rhythmic translations of the poems are enhanced by an introduction and commentary that provide biographical and bibliographical information about Catullus, a history of his times, a discussion of the translations, and definitions and notes that ease the way for anyone who is not a Latin scholar.

Book excerpt: In her stunning second collection, Carlina Duan illuminates unabashed odes to lineage, small and sacred moments of survival, and the demand to be fully seen "spangling with light." Tracing familial lore and love, Duan reflects on the experience of growing up as a diasporic, bilingual daughter of immigrants, exploring the fraught complexities of identity, belonging, and linguistic reclamation. Alien Miss brings forth beautifully powerful voices: immigrants facing the Chinese Exclusion Act, the first Chinese American woman to vote, and matriarchal ancestors. The poems in this ambitious collection are immersed in the knotted blood of sisterhood, both celebrating and challenging conceptions of inheritance and homeland. I browse through archives full of men and women with long black hair, throwing themselves into the land. thread of grass. thread of immaculate touch. paper son, or paper daughter. my own papers marked with wings, the pointed tip of an eagle's beak. here, I'm made prey. I pledge allegiance. --Excerpt from "Alien Miss Confronts the Author"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixty poems in Lucilla Maclaren Spillane’s collection are written with a keen eye for detail and draw on her wide range of experiences in several countries. Written in traditional form and with an ear for harmony, they are memorable and easy to read. The poems range from the deep understanding she shows in Another Seeing, through the beauty of ‘The Lake’ in Wisconsin, ‘The Fountain’ in Oxford and ‘Street Lamps’ in Malta to the stark humanity of ‘The Beggar,’ ‘The Widow’ and ‘A Lonely New Year.’ ‘Lift Off!’ re-creates the tension of a Space Shuttle Launch; ‘Dragon’ the secret fears of a child with epilepsy; ‘No Time to Die,’ the redemption of an alcoholic; ‘Sunday Bells,’ the frustrations of the writing process; whilst ‘Haggis Night,’ vividly depicts the fabled Hogmanay Hunt for Haggis in the Highlands of Scotland. Some of the poems in this collection deal with disabilities, including the author’s own epilepsy. The poems will provoke thought on the broader implications of disability and on the way others respond to it. The notes to the poems contained within this volume also give the poems added depth and interest, explaining how and where they were inspired and what it was that prompted her to write each of them. The afterword explores her influences, philosophy and beliefs with regard to poetry.

Book excerpt: This gorgeous and wry debut firmly claims physical strength, toughness, and authority for femininity. Ambalila Hemsell's poems speak from a place of empowerment as well as wonder. They address the insatiable fear of motherhood and the violence embedded in natural processes of creation, birth, and survival. Her words flicker and glow with magical realism, just as they reveal profound truths shared by the miraculous and the mundane. This lush and lyric collection artfully tackles what it means to reconcile one's own needs and desires with those of others, and to find abundance and strength in the midst of catastrophe.
