Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian Seaman first went to Badminton as an autograph-hunting fan in the 1960s. He later decided to become a competitor. In his first year, his horse became lame. Year two, he completed the dressage in a rainstorm in a coat made in his tailoring class at college. Third time he fell. Indeed, he fell off several times on national TV and achieved immortality as the ‘ What happened next?’ feature on BBC’ s A Question of Sport. Meanwhile, Julian enjoyed the splendour and history of the event – watching Mark Phillips win four times, the grand daughter of the Viceroy of India, Lucinda Prior-Palmer win six times and has enjoyed watching both Princess Anne and daughter Zara riding the classic course. And over the years, he’ s witnessed some odd happenings, for example, in 1973, one-third of all constants failed to get past the third obstacle. On another occasion, Gurgle The Greek clambered, unpenalised, under a jump, to officially clear it.On another, dual Olympic Gold medallist, Mark Todd, rode a chance horse, lost a stirrup and competed ‘ one-legged’ ! Julian is now Press Officer at this magnificent event and cantors us through the history of Badminton regailing us with fascinating facts and marvellous memories that brings the event to life. A beguiling book, this will be enjoyed by horse lovers and history lovers alike. Scriptwriter, broadcaster and Press Officer at Badminton, Julian Seaman was once a competitor at Badminton Horse Trials. His previous book, Sixteen Hands Between Your Legs was a best-seller.

Book excerpt: ‘. . . being a player from India defines who I am. When I play, it’s for my parents, my coach, and my country.’ Meet Saina Nehwal—India’s star badminton player and World Number 4, Padma Shri and Khel Ratna awardee, the girl who brought laurels to India by winning an Olympic medal at the age of twenty-two. In this fascinating memoir, she talks about her childhood and growing–up years; her relationship with the most important people in her life; the ups and downs of her celebrated career, from district level wins to the Olympics; and the sacrifices needed to succeed in any sport. She also reveals little-known facts and offers a peek into her many avatars—daughter, sister, student, and the regular girl behind the badminton prodigy. Find out what a typical day in Saina’s life is like—rigorous training, a strict diet, and no parties or sleepovers. But it’s not all work and no play; Saina loves to shop, eat ice cream (post wins only), and play games on her iPad! With candid photographs and badminton tips from the pro herself, this book showcases the making of a badminton champ—in her own words.

This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gurkha Army Service Corps, the predecessor of The Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment, was raised in Singapore in 1958 ten years after the transfer of Gurkha regiments from the Indian Army to the British Army and towards the end of the Malayan Emergency. Within four years of being formed, it was committed to continuous operations in Brunei and Borneo during Confrontation with Indonesia between 1962-66. It was also redesignated the Gurkha Transport Regiment in 1965 to reflect changes to the Army’s logistic structure. Between 1966-71, the Regiment was substantially reduced in size, along with the rest of The Brigade of Gurkhas, as Britain withdrew its forces from East of Suez. Concentrated in Hong Kong, the Regiment provided transport support to the Garrison for the next 20 years. In 1991, a composite squadron was sent to reinforce British Forces in the Gulf War after which, in preparation for the handback of Hong Kong to China, the Regiment moved to and became permanently stationed in the UK. In recognition of its past services, it was granted the royal title ‘The Queen’s Own Gurkha Transport Regiment’ in 1992. The following two decades saw it undertake multiple operational tours to the Balkans, Iraq, Cyprus and Afghanistan as well as providing humanitarian assistance to the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone. It also expanded both its role, to incorporate supply and catering, and size, which led in 2001 to it being redesignated to its current title ‘The Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment’. This history records the events and activities of the Regiment during its first 60 years of service to the Crown. While of wider interest to military historians, it is principally written for members of the Regiment, past, present and future.

This book captures the contributions of important people, events, and institutions that have shaped India in its 75 years as an independent country. Each entry is a captivating stand-alone story which traces the genesis and importance of the subject's contribution. Sharp insights, analyses, and questions of “what if?” pepper the entries, prompting the reader to think deeper. Together, they represent the kaleidoscope that is modern India, making up a fascinating mosaic of the myriad influences that have made India a liberal democracy and a plural society. This book would be of interest primarily to academics, scholars, and university students, but especially to young people, civil service aspirants, and researchers who would find a compendium of this kind useful in garnering a nuanced understanding of the history of independent India.
