This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a Timeline of Goethe’s Life & Works and a Glossary of Philosophic Terminology used by Goethe. "Winkelmann and His Century," compiled in 1805 by Goethe from letters he had written on Winkelmann, stands as an exploration of art history, Aesthetics and the influence of Johann Joachim Winkelmann, a prominent German art historian, on European art. With sophisticated vacademic rigor, Goethe examines the cultural and intellectual landscape of the 18th century, focusing on the transformative impact of Winkelmann's theories on the understanding and appreciation of art. He delves into the interplay between art, culture, and intellectual discourse, shedding light on the ways in which Winkelmann's ideas shaped artistic movements and informed aesthetic sensibilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over two centuries the notion that societies have been sharply divided into women's (private) and men's (public) spheres has been used both to describe and to prescribe social life. More recently, it has been applied and critiqued by feminist scholars as an explanation for women's oppression. Spanning a rich array of historical contexts--from medieval nunneries to Ottoman harems to Paris communes to electronics firms in today's Silicon Valley--the twenty essays collected here offer a pathbreaking reassessment of the significance of the concept of separate spheres. After a theoretical introduction by the editors, certain essays reexamine historians' definitions of public and private realms and show how the imposition of these categories often obscures the realities of power structures and the alterable nature of gender roles. Other chapters consider how the concept of separate domains has been used to control women's actions. Additional essays explore the limits of public/private distinctions, focusing on women's working lives, the role of the state in the family, and the ways in which women including Native North Americans, African-Americans in the birth control movement, and participants in the lesbian bar culture have themselves reshaped the model of separate spheres. Making available the best papers on the public/private theme delivered at the 1987 Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, Gendered Domains will be welcomed by anyone interested in women's studies, including historians, political scientists, feminist theorists, anthropologists, sociologists, and philosophers.

Book excerpt: Automating Humanity is the shocking and eye-opening new manifesto from international award-winning designer Joe Toscano that unravels and lays bare the power agendas of the world's greatest tech titans in plain language, and delivers a fair warning to policymakers, civilians, and industry professionals alike: we need a strategy for the future, and we need it now. Automating Humanity is an insider's perspective on everything Big Tech doesn't want the public to know-or think about-from the addictions installed on a global scale to the profits being driven by fake news and disinformation, to the way they're manipulating the world for profit and using our data to train systems that will automate jobs at an explosive, unprecedented scale. Toscano provides a critique of modern regulation, including parts of the new European Union's General Data Proctection Regulation (GDPR) suggesting how we can create proactive, adaptable regulation that satisfies both the needs of consumer safety and commercial success in the international economy. The content touches on everything from technology, economics, and public policy to psychology, history, and ethics, and is written in a way that is accessible to everyone from the average reader to the technical expert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively collection of essays, originally published in 1989, illustrated recent developments in the area, with chapters by contributors from many different countries and disciplines. Asking new questions and using sources in a challenging way, the contributors reflect 1980s debates about politics and academic research in women’s studies. They cover a wide range of topics, dealing for example with opportunities and obstacles for women within male-defined power-structures and institutions such as science, religious communities, and ancient Roman industry. They discuss feminists and feminist movements, analyse the utterances of women and men in medieval literature and in defamation cases, and give insights into the ways femaleness and femininity are given meaning. The essays on theory deal with such important issues as women’s historiography, and androcentrism and ethnocentrism in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Try to recall the best coach you’ve ever had. Consider what differentiated them from other coaches; what made them so effective? Was it their knowledge and programming, or did it come down to the way they communicated with you and the way they made you feel? While the former are critical, it is a coach’s words that set them apart from the rest. The Language of Coaching focuses on the impact that communication has on an individual’s ability to learn and perform a movement. Written by performance coach Nick Winkelman, the book examines how instruction, feedback, and cueing can significantly affect training outcomes. Grounded in motor learning and the science of attentional focus, Winkelman takes you on a journey, guiding you through practical coaching frameworks that will help you adapt your language to the learning needs of those you support. Packed with stunning visuals, the book provides over 25 movement sequences that outline different types of coaching cues, including a visual depiction of unique analogies, such as a sprinter taking off like a jet or an athlete loading into a jump like a spring. The book is filled with a comprehensive collection of cueing frameworks that guide you through the process of creating your own cues for any movement you want to teach. You will also learn how to engage in more productive conversation with your athletes through sample dialogue that uses the book’s cueing philosophy. Whether you are new to coaching or a seasoned veteran, The Language of Coaching will help you grow as a communicator and learn how to coach the person with the same precision as you do the program. It may be purchased separately or as part of a package that includes both the book and exam.

Book excerpt: A corporate executive stands accused of a terrible crime in this searing legal drama from the bestselling author of A Covenant with Death The managing director of a popular West Coast television network, Joseph Harrison has everything a man could want: a successful career, a loving family, the promise of a bright and prosperous future. His life is one happy circumstance after another—until the fateful evening he gets behind the wheel after drinking three martinis and hits a pedestrian. Arraigned on charges of manslaughter, Harrison knows that his perfect world is lost forever. But no one seems to think he should pay for his crime. Not the chairman of the network’s board of directors, who immediately hires a slick Hollywood attorney to defend Harrison. Not the eyewitnesses to the accident, whose testimonies suddenly change when they step inside the courtroom. Not even the judge, who is pressured by the powerful interests that stand behind the defendant. Only Harrison believes that he should face the consequences—but is he brave enough to proclaim his guilt when the entire system wants to declare him innocent? A dramatic portrait of one man’s moral crisis and a blistering indictment of the influence of money and power in America, Juice is a masterful novel of suspense from one of the twentieth century’s most original and captivating authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of microdata has increased rapidly over the last decades, and standard statistical and econometric software packages for data analysis include ever more sophisticated modeling options. The goal of this book is to familiarize readers with a wide range of commonly used models, and thereby to enable them to become critical consumers of current empirical research, and to conduct their own empirical analyses. The focus of the book is on regression-type models in the context of large cross-section samples. In microdata applications, dependent variables often are qualitative and discrete, while in other cases, the sample is not randomly drawn from the population of interest and the dependent variable is censored or truncated. Hence, models and methods are required that go beyond the standard linear regression model and ordinary least squares. Maximum li- lihood estimation of conditional probability models and marginal probability e?ects are introduced here as the unifying principle for modeling, estimating and interpreting microdata relationships. We consider the limitation to m- imum likelihood sensible, from a pedagogical point of view if the book is to be used in a semester-long advanced undergraduate or graduate course, and from a practical point of view because maximum likelihood estimation is used in the overwhelming majority of current microdata research. In order to introduce and explain the models and methods, we refer to a number of illustrative applications. The main examples include the deter- nants of individual fertility, the intergenerational transmission of secondary schoolchoices, andthewageelasticityoffemalelaborsupply.
