Download or read book Wings over Ogaden written by Tom Cooper and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2015-04-19 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Ethiopia in disarray following a period of severe internal unrest and the spread of insurgencies in Eritrea and Tigray, Ethiopia and its armed forces should have offered little opposition to well-equipped Somali armed forces which were unleashed to capture Ogaden, in July 1977. However, excellently trained pilots of the Ethiopian Air Force took full advantage of their US-made equipment, primarily their few brand-new Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighter-bombers, to take the fight to their opponents, win air superiority over the battlefield, and thus have their hands free to interdict the Somali supply links to stop the invasion cold. This air victory practically sealed the fate of the Somali juggernaut in Ogaden, especially so once Ethiopia convinced Cuba and the Soviet Bloc to support her instead of Somalia. In a fit of pique, Somalia forced all Soviet advisers to leave the country. Already bitter over similar experiences in Egypt in 1972, Moscow's revenge was designed as a clear message: nobody was to treat her in such fashion again. The USSR subsequently launched an air bridge to Ethiopia, unique and unprecedented in its extension and importance, delivering huge quantities of armament and equipment necessary for the Ethiopians to reconquer Ogaden, and beyond. In turn Somalia asked the USA for help and thus occurred an unprecedented switch of Cold War alliances. This volume details the history and training of both Ethiopian and Somali air forces, their equipment and training, tactics used and kills claimed, against the backdrop of the flow of the Ogaden war. It explains in detail, supported by over 100 contemporary and exclusive photographs, maps and color profiles, how the Ethiopian Air Force won the decisive victory in the air by expertly deploying the F-5Es - unequaled in maneuverability, small size and powerful armament - to practically destroy the Somali Air Force and its MiG-17s and MiG-21s.

After a period as a test pilot at Boscombe Down he became one of only four Wing Leaders in the Royal Navy. His reputation as a fearless and dynamic leader remains a legend today. The book contains detailed and graphic accounts of aerial sorties and strikes throughout the dark days over Nazi Europe. Book Synopsis RAF Wings over Florida by : Will Largent
Download or read book RAF Wings over Florida written by Will Largent and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1941 through 1945, British cadets in the Royal Air Force trained in the United States through the Lend-Lease Act, President Roosevelt’s ingenious plan to help beleaguered Great Britain while maintaining the semblance of neutrality. This book tells the saga of two Florida training fields during this turbulent time. In their own words, British pilots tell of their Florida experiences. Many of them still in their late teens, away from home for the first time, pale and thin from years of rationing, these young men encountered immense challenges and overwhelming generosity during their training in Florida. Now retired, these former pilots still smell the scent of orange blossoms when they glance through the log books they kept while flying their Stearmans and Harvards over Florida citrus groves. They fondly remember the times when they buzzed over the homes of their Florida “families” to let them know to expect them for Sunday dinner. More than fifty years later, their stories still resonate with universal emotions: fear of failure, love of country, camaraderie, romantic love, and the pain of tragic deaths. Their stories also remind the American reader of a unique time in our history, when, poised on the brink of war, the United States reached out to help a country in distress.
Book Synopsis Wings Over Somerset by : Peter Forrester
Download or read book Wings Over Somerset written by Peter Forrester and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One evening as he made his way to a local church social in the village hall during the 1950s, a loud crack shook the ground and the night sky turned to an orange glow, lighting the way for him. Shrugging his shoulders, the author made his way through the village, and in the distance he heard an explosion as a jet aircraft hit the ground. It was a common enough occurrence in the village of Ilton; RAF Merryfield was always losing aircraft and on a regular basis. Fifty years later, and in an effort to put his indifference right, the author began to investigate air crashes in and around Somerset. What he discovered appalled him at the sheer scale of it all. He now shares his findings of Somerset air crashes since 1945 with you.
Book Synopsis Wings Over Shangri La by : E. Janet Steiger
Download or read book Wings Over Shangri La written by E. Janet Steiger and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shangri La--a land of enchantment. No! The story location--Dutch New Guinea (now Irian Jaya, Indonesia), one of the last unexplored frontiers. In 1954, missionaries preceded government control to live & work among primitive Stone Age people with cannibalistic customs. Their lifestyle included violence & killing. The Title WINGS... is a clue to a central theme--aviation. No roads. No trails. Initial forays utilized amphibious or float planes until miniature airstrips were carved out with digging sticks & stone axes. Dramatic events related include: The 1945 crash of a C-47-- three survivors are rescued by glider from Shangri La. A recent interview with one survivor provides accurate details. Two missionaries killed by tribal carriers (from official Dutch report). Michael Rockefeller missing on the south coast November 1961. Sharks, crocodiles, or cannibals? The author & husband were eyewitnesses to many of the events, 1954 to 1962. This account is true, accurate & unembellished. John Miller, Mission Aviation in Irian Jaya writes, "...an intensely documented, detailed & accurate book. Thank you for a fine book!" Order from E.
