Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Wind-tunnel tests have been made to determine the aerodynamic section characteristics of an NACA 0009 airfoil with a plain flap having a chord 25 percent of the airfoil chord and a balancing tab having a chord 50 percent of the airfoil chord or 200 percent of the flap chord so linked that the tab would deflect at a given rate with respect to the flap. Three linkage ratios were tested on the model. The tests indicated that the flap and tab could be linked to give hinge-moment balance with flap deflection and with angle of attack and yet have greater lift effectiveness than a plain flap of similar size with a conventional balancing tab having a chord 20 percent of the flap chord linked to give hinge-moment balance with flap deflection only.

This book was released on 1948 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted in the Langley 4- by 6-foot tunnel to determine the boundary-layer characteristics of an NACA 0009 airfoil equipped with 0.25- and 0.50-airfoil chord plain sealed flaps. The tests were made to define as thoroughly as possible the characteristics of two of the configurations used in a comprehensive investigation of control surface characteristics and also to provide additional data for comparison with previous boundary-layer analyses. The measured velocity profiles and the boundary-layer parameters determined from them are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-distribution tests have been made in the NACA 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel of a plain flap with interchangeable beveled trailing edges on an NACA 0009 airfoil. The flap chord was 30 percent of the airfoil chord and the bevel chords were 15 and 20 percent of the flap chord. The 15-percent bevel was tested with the bevel corner faired with both large and small radii. The purpose of these tests was to supply pressure-distribution data that may be used for structural and aerodynamic design of the horizontal and vertical tail surfaces.

Leroy Spearman and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind-tunnel tests have been made of 0.25- and 0.50-airfoil-chord plain flaps tested independently and in combination on a NACA 0009 airfoil. Results indicated that the hinge-moment and lift-effectiveness parameters for each flap were in close agreement with curves predicting the variation of these parameters with flap chord. Theoretical calculations made by he use of parameters measured in the tests indicated close agreement with calculations made by the use of parameters estimated from pressure distribution data for a model having similar flaps that were linked to give balance.

Download or read book Wind-tunnel Investigation of Control-surface Characteristics written by John M. Riebe and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Wind-tunnel tests have been made to investigate the characteristics of an NACA 0009 airfoil with a 40-percent-chord flap having medium and large aerodynamic balances of elliptical and blunt nose shapes and having a plain overhang. The results are presented as aerodynamic section characteristics for several flap deflections with the gap at the flap nose sealed and unsealed. Tests were also made to determine the effectiveness of a tab, which was 20 percent of the flap chord, on the plain sealed flap and on the 35-percent-flap-chord elliptical-overhang flap with gap sealed. The pressure difference across the flap-nose seal was also determined for the plain sealed flap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Blunt-nose and elliptical-nose overhangs of 0.35 and 0.50 flap chord and a plain overhang on a flap having a chord of 0.20 airfoil chord have been tested in two-dimensional flow on an NACA 0009 airfoil. The results of the tests are presented as aerodynamic section characteristics for several flap deflections with the gap at the flap nose sealed or unsealed. Tests were made also to determine the effectiveness of a tab of 0.20 flap chord on the plain sealed flap and on a sealed flap having an elliptical overhang of 0.35 flap chord. The pressure difference across the flap seal was also determined for the plain sealed flap.

Download or read book The Inward Bulge Type Buckling of Monocoque Cylinders written by Nicholas John Hoff and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strain energy theory is developed for the calculation of the critical load for the inward bulge type of general instability of reinforced monocoque cylinders subjected to pure bending. The deflected shape at buckling is assumed to be represented by an expression containing eight free parameters in addition to the two characterizing the wave lengths of the circumferential and axial directions. The theory is applied to two representative cylinders of the GALCIT test series and to two of the PIBAL series. The critical stresses calculated are 8.3 to 22.9 percent higher than the experimental values.

Download or read book Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Control-Surface Characteristics. 22 - Medium and Large Aerodynamic Balance of Two Nose Shapes and a Plain Overhang Used with a 0.20-Airfoil-Chord Flap on an NACA 0009 Airfoil written by and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NACA is conducting an extensive investigation determine the characteristics of various types of flap arrangement suitable for use as control surface and to provide data for design purpose. The investigation, which made in the Langley 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel, had included test of modifications of flap profile, trailing edge angle, gap size, flap nose shape and balance chord, however most of those tests have been made in two dimensional flow with a flap having a chord 30 percent of the airfoil chord (0.30c). The present tests have extended the investigation of balance chord and flap nose shape, which was reported in reference 1 for a 0.40c flap, to a 0.20c flap. Data on the pressure across the flap nose seal and a method of applying these pressure across the flap nose seal and a method of applying these pressure data in the design of internal balances are presented. Tab data are presented for the plain flap and for a flap with aerodynamic balance.
Book Synopsis Wind-tunnel Investigation of Control-surface Characteristics by : I. Elizabeth Garner
Download or read book Wind-tunnel Investigation of Control-surface Characteristics written by I. Elizabeth Garner and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Correlation is established between aerodynamic characteristics of control surfaces in two-dimensional and three-dimensional flow. Slope of lift curve was affected little by overhang and balance-nose shape, but increased by sealing flap-nose gap. Effectiveness of balancing tab was same for sealed plain flap and unsealed overhang flap. Changes in hinge-moment coefficient were diminished by sealing gap. Values measured by three-dimensional flow disagreed with two-dimensional flow values until aspect ratio corrections were made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Force tests in two-dimensional flow have been made in the NACA 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of an NACA 0009 airfoil with flaps having chords 20, 30, and 40 percent of the airfoil chord and 20, 30, and 40 degrees beveled trailing edges. The effect of a gap at the nose of the flap and of a rough leading edge was determined for the flaps equipped with a 30 degree beveled trailing edge.
