Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation was made in the LMAL 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of an NACA 23021 airfoil with a double slotted flap having a chord 32 percent of the airfoil chord (0.32c) to determine the aerodynamic section characteristics with the flaps deflected at various positions. The effects of moving the fore flap and rear flap as a unit and of deflecting or removing the lower lip of the slot were also determined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As human population continues to increase here on earth, congested streets and highways will abound at a rate well beyond our current plans for solution. Something is drastically needed to relax traffic congestion. An Aircar that con be housed in your garage; can takeoff "quietly" from in front of your house without a runway; and take you to work and back every day is conceptualized herein. A design specification for an Aircar is developed herein by first identifying the impracticalities of everyone having an Aircar for everyday use and then sets forth the technological means for overcoming each of the identified impracticalities. An Aircar design concept is presented based on a design specification. The one great importance of this book is that it identifies large number of applications currently under development, many of which have not been oriented toward any specific application.. Such technologies include nanotube materials, electrogravity propulsion, Lithium Air batteries, "free energy" electrical generators, plasma actuators for boundary layer flow control and noise reduction and electronic guidance and safety control. Thus, the development of the Aircar will bring to the entire aeronautical industry the full development of such relatively "far out" technologies."

Book excerpt: Summary: Tests have been made in the Langley 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the applicability of nonperforated, balanced double split flaps for use as aerodynamic brakes. Information was desired on the braking power of the flaps as well as on the effectiveness and the stability of a conventional trailing-edge aileron located immediately behind the flaps. A rectangular 10- by 60-inch wing model of NACA 2212 airfoil section was used for the tests. Results were obtained for flat-plate flaps with no wing cut-outs and for flaps having Clark Y sections with cut-outs made in the wing to simulate the space left open by the deflected flaps. The flap deflections, the chordwise location, and the gaps between the flaps and the airfoil contour were varied over wide ranges in order to determine the optimum configuration. In addition to the force tests, an investigation was made to determine any buffeting tendencies of the aileron. Silk tufts and a flexible torque rod were used for these tests.

Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation was carried out in the NACA two-dimensional low-turbulence pressure tunnel of the NACA 66(215)-216, 66,1-212, and 651-212 airfoil sections equipped with split flaps having chords 20 percent of the airfoil chord. The purpose was to determine the maximum-lift characteristics of these low-drag airfoil sections with split flaps. All the present tests were made at a Reynolds number of approximately 6 x 106 and a Mach number of about 0.15.

Book excerpt: Pressure-distribution tests have been made in the NACA 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel of a plain flap with interchangeable beveled trailing edges on an NACA 0009 airfoil. The flap chord was 30 percent of the airfoil chord and the bevel chords were 15 and 20 percent of the flap chord. The 15-percent bevel was tested with the bevel corner faired with both large and small radii. The purpose of these tests was to supply pressure-distribution data that may be used for structural and aerodynamic design of the horizontal and vertical tail surfaces.

Book excerpt: With the development of supersonic aircraft, the X-plane era ushered in a new and challenging phase of flight. Researchers found that much of the knowledge accumulated from the previous, subsonic flight era did not apply to the emerging supersonic aircraft. These turbojet-powered planes also outpaced the usefulness of the wind tunnel, previously an indispensible tool of aeronautic research. This book explores the development of the X-series research aircraft, the planes that helped bridge the gap between subsonic flight and hypersonic flight.

Book excerpt: Computer simulations is a fundamental tool of the design process in many engineering disciplines including aerospace engineering. However, although high-fidelity numerical models are accurate, they can be computationally expensive with evaluation time for a single design as long as hours, days or even weeks. Simulation-driven design using conventional optimization techniques may be therefore prohibitive. This book explores the alternative: performing computationally efficient design using surrogate-based optimization, where the high-fidelity model is replaced by its computationally cheap but still reasonably accurate representation: a surrogate. The emphasis is on physics-based surrogates. Application-wise, the focus is on aerodynamics and the methods and techniques described in the book are demonstrated using aerodynamic shape optimization cases. Applications in other engineering fields are also demonstrated.State-of-the-art techniques and a depth of coverage never published before make this a unique and essential book for all researchers working in aerospace and other engineering areas and dealing with optimization, computationally expensive design problems, and simulation-driven design.

Book excerpt: The airplane has experienced phenomenal advancement in the twentieth century, changing at an exponential rate from the Wright brothers to the present day. In this ground breaking work based on new research, Dr John D. Anderson, Jr, a curator at the National Air and Space Museum, analyzes the historical development of the conceptual design process of the airplane. He aims to answer the question of whether airplane advancement has been driven by a parallel advancement in the intellectual methodology of conceptual airplane design. In doing so, Anderson identifies and examines six case histories of 'grand designers' in this field, and challenges some of the preconceived notions of how the intellectual methodology of conceptual airplane design advanced. Filled with over one hundred illustrations which bring his words to life, Anderson unfolds the lives and thoughts of these grand designers.
