Book excerpt: A method is described for measuring the dynamic stability derivatives of a model airplane in a wind tunnel. The characteristics features of this system are that single-degree-of-freedom oscillations were used to obtain combinations of rolling, yawing, and pitching motions; that the oscillations were excited and controlled by velocity feedback which permitted operation under conditions unfavorable for more conventional types of oscillatory testing; and that data processing was greatly simplified by using analog computer elements in the strain-gage circuitry.

Book excerpt: Combinations of an NACA 23012 tapered wing and a circular fuselage having a wedge-shaped rear were tested in the NACA 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel to determine the effect of wing-fuselage interference on the lateral-stability of wing-fuselage interference on the lateral-stability characteristics. The model configurations represented a high-wing, a mid-wing, and a low-wing monoplane. For each configuration, tests were made with a partial-span split flap neutral and deflected 60 degrees and with and without a vertical tail. Tests of the fuselage alone and of the fuselage with the vertical tail were also made.

Wright and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximation method has been developed for calculating the spanwise distribution of wind-tunnel-boundary upwash interference on lift of wings in rectangular perforated-wall test sections. This method is applied to square test sections with an assumed effective permeability constant of 0.6. A problem of considerable difficulty in practical application of the method presented is the estimation of an effective permeability constant. Because of the variation of the upwash interference with Mach number and of the influence of boundary layer on the effective permeability factor, the boundary interference in a perforated-wall wind-tunnel test section at high subsonic Mach numbers is likely to be of the nature of that in an open-throat tunnel.
