Book excerpt: This thesis describes performance measures and ensemble architectures for deterministic and probabilistic forecasts using the application example of wind power forecasting and proposes a novel scheme for the situation-dependent aggregation of forecasting models. For performance measures, error scores for deterministic as well as probabilistic forecasts are compared, and their characteristics are shown in detail. For the evaluation of deterministic forecasts, a categorization by basic error measure and normalization technique is introduced that simplifies the process of choosing an appropriate error measure for certain forecasting tasks. Furthermore, a scheme for the common evaluation of different forms of probabilistic forecasts is proposed. Based on the analysis of the error scores, a novel hierarchical aggregation technique for both deterministic and probabilistic forecasting models is proposed that dynamically weights individual forecasts using multiple weighting factors such as weather situation and lead time dependent weighting. In the experimental evaluation it is shown that the forecasting quality of the proposed technique is able to outperform other state of the art forecasting models and ensembles.

The proposed method introduces a finite control set under constraints for the demanded yaw rate, predicts the multi-step yaw error using the control set element and the prediction wind directions, and employs an exhaustive search method to search the control output candidate giving the minimal value of the objective function. As the objective function is designed for a joint power and actuator usage optimization, the weighting factor in the objective function is optimally determined by the fuzzy regulator that is optimized by an intelligent algorithm. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated by simulation tests using real wind direction data.

The three policies are the participation factor policy, the affine response policy and the bilevel programming (BLP) policy. The policies are tested on multiple systems to illustrate more active network monitoring and control.

Increasing the wind capture capability improves the economic viability of this technology, and makes it more competitive with traditional fossil-fuel based supplies. Therefore, it is necessary to explore control strategies that maximize aerodynamic efficiency, thus, the wind energy capture. Several control algorithms are developed and compared during this research. A traditional feedback control is adapted as the benchmark approach, where the turbine torque and the blade pitch angle are used to control the wind turbine operation during partial and full load operations, correspondingly. Augmented feedback control algorithms are then developed to improve the wind energy harvesting. Optimal control methodologies are extensively explored to achieve maximal wind energy capture. Numerical optimization techniques, such as direct shooting optimization are employed. The direct shooting method convert the optimal control problem into a parameter optimization problem and use nonlinear programming algorithm to find the optimal solution. The dynamic programming, a global optimization approach over a time horizon, is also investigated. The dynamic programming finds the control inputs for the blade pitch angle and speed ratio to maximize the power coefficient, based on historical wind data. A dynamic wind turbine model has been developed to facilitate this process by characterizing the performance of the various possible input scenarios. Simulation results of each algorithm on real wind site data are presented to compare the wind energy capture under the proposed control algorithms with the traditional feedback control design. The result of the tradeoff analysis between the computation expense and the energy capture is also reported.

During the last few decades, the installation of wind turbines for power generation has grown rapidly worldwide. Besides utility scale wind farms, distributed wind energy systems contributes to the rise in wind energy penetration. However, the expansion of distributed wind energy systems is faced by major challenges such as the system's reliability in addition to the environmental impacts. This work is intended to explore various control algorithms to enable the distributed wind energy systems to face the aforementioned challenges. First of all, a stall regulated fixed speed wind turbine augmented with a variable ratio gearbox has been proven to enhance the wind energy capture at a relatively low cost, and considered as an attractive design for small wind energy systems. However, the high reliability advantage of traditional fixed-speed wind turbines can be affected by the integration of the variable ratio gearbox. A portion of this work is intended to develop a control algorithm that extends the variable ratio gearbox service life, thus improves overall system reliability and reduces the expected operational cost. Secondly, a pitch regulated variable speed wind turbines dominates the wind energy industry as it represents a balance between cost and flexibility of operation. They can be used for midsized wind power generation. Optimizing its wind energy capture while maintain high system reliability has been the one of the main focuses of many researchers. Another portion of this work introduces a model predictive control framework that enhances the reliability of pitch regulated variable speed wind turbines, thus improves their operational cost. Finally, one of the major environmental challenges facing the continuous growth of wind energy industry is the noise emitted from wind turbines. The severity of the noise emission problem is more significant for small and medium sized wind turbines installed in the vicinity of residential areas for distributed power generation. Consequently, the last portion of this work is intended to investigate the potential of wind turbine control design to reduce noise emission in different operating conditions with minimal impact on power generation

The ability of a wind turbine to extract power from the wind is a function of three main factors: the measured wind speed, the power curve of the turbine, and the ability of the machine to handle wind fluctuations. The key parameter determining wind turbine performance is wind speed and it is normally measured with an anemometer placed at the nacelle of a turbine. The dynamic nature of wind speed, however, is a barrier for applying predictive engineering in wind energy. Traditional approaches based on physical science and mathematical modelings have limitations on wind power prediction models. Conventional approach based on dynamic modeling has disadvantage of power generation process modeling due to time-shift nature of the process. Data mining is a promising approach for modeling wind energy, e.g., power prediction and optimization, wind speed forecasting, power curve monitoring and fault diagnosis. It involves a number of steps including data pre-processing, data sampling, feature selection, dimension reduction and, etc. This thesis focus on applying data mining to predictive engineering in wind industry, and ultimately builds wind speed prediction and wind farm power prediction models, develops turbine dynamic control and power optimization strategy, explores methodology for system level fault diagnosis. However the philosophy, methods and frameworks discussed in this research can also be applied to other industrial processes. This thesis proposes a series of predictive models under the framework of data mining. Chapter 2 introduces a methodology for short term wind speed prediction based on wind farm layout information. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 present prediction models for wind turbine parameters. Chapter 5 proposes strategies for dynamic control of wind turbines. Chapter 6 explores the fault diagnosis and prediction using SCADA data.

If the wind speed excesses 25m/s, the wind turbines should be shut down and cut off from the elctrical grid immediately. The wind turbines will wait to restart and connect with the electrical grid again after the wind speed value below a certain value. However, this control strategy has a significant drawback, which will cause impact to the electrical grid when wind turbines cut off and connect back to the grid. In an earlier student project a model for this problem has been developed and the loads under these conditions were analyzed, while a PI controller was designed to control the turbine, following a decreasing power reference curve in function of wind speed. The controls were designed to have smaller loads above 25m/s than at 25m/s. The first step of this project is to find an optimal power reference curve for wind speeds above the 25m/s, which takes into account the issues of: power smoothness, power maximization, load limits, etc. The next step would be to design an optimal controller which should follow the power reference, as well as control the loads and speeds of the wind turbine.
