Book excerpt: The Cinema of Wim Wenders, the first anthology of scholarly work on Wenders, is a unique anthropology of source materials and selected critical essays on the films of Wim Wenders, a major filmmaker in the so-called New German Cinema movement. His work, probably more than that of any other European director, reflects the tension between the European auteur tradition and the increasing dominance of the American media industry. In both his filmmaking and his critical writing, he explores how the relationship between image and narrative manifests the basic opposition between these two film traditions. This book serves as an introduction to the central concerns of his cinema while situation his work within German film history and the contemporary debates about postmodern film and media theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors trace the development of one of the most well-known directors of the New German Cinema that flourished in the 1970s and early 1980s. Examining Wim Wenders' career from his early film school productions through his mature works of the 1970s, this book also analyses the most recent works, as well as the themes and preoccupations that unite his oeuvre. As the authors note, Wenders' works have been profoundly influenced by American films, especially the 'road movie' genre. His own work often features characters who are always on the move, in an attempt to capture a glimpse of their identity and place in the world. They also represent a generation of postwar Germans seeking to redeem themselves and the history of their country by turning to American popular culture, particularly its music and movies.

However, it is now clear that complex societies with large, sedentary populations were present for over a millennium before European contact. Associated with these are tracts of anomalously fertile, dark soils termed ‘terra preta’ or dark earths. These soils are presently an important agricultural resource within Amazonia and provide a model for developing long-term future sustainability of food production in tropical environments. The late Dutch soil scientist Wim Sombroek (1934-2003) was instrumental in bringing the significance of these soils to the attention of the world over four decades ago. Wim saw not only the possibilities of improving the lives of small holders throughout the world with simple carbon based soil technologies, but was an early proponent of the positive synergies also achieved in regards to carbon sequestration and global climatic change abatement. Wim’s vision was to form a multidisciplinary group whose members maintained the ideal of open collaboration toward the attainment of shared goals. Always encouraged and often shaped by Wim, this free association of international scholars termed the “Terra Preta Nova” Group came together in 2001 and has flourished. This effort has been defined by enormous productivity. Wim who is never far from any of our minds and hearts, would have loved to share the great experience of seeing the fruits of his vision as demonstrated in this volume.

In addition to offering new insights into his cult masterpieces, the 10 essays in this volume highlight the thematic and aesthetic continuities between his early films and his latest productions. Wenders's films have much to contribute to current conversations on intermediality, whether it be through his adaptations of important literary works or his filmic reinventions of famous paintings by Edward Hopper or Andrew Wyeth. Wenders has also positioned himself as a decidedly transnational and translingual filmmaker taking on the challenge of representing peripheral spaces without falling into the trap of a neo-colonial gaze. Making Films That Matter argues that Wenders remains a true innovator in both his experiments in 3D filmmaking and his attempts to define a visual poetics of peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is education? Most of the time, we have little patience for this question because we take the answer to be obvious: we identify education with school learning. This book focuses on education outside of the school context as a basis for criticizing and improving school learning. Following the examples of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Dewey, Arcilla seeks to harmonize schooling with a more pervasive education we are all naturally undergoing. He develops a philosophical theory of education that stresses the experience of being led out-a theory latent in the Latin term, “educere”-by examining the road movies of Wim Wenders. This book contributes both to our understanding of another crucial kind of education our schooling could better serve, and to our appreciation of what unifies and distinguishes Wenders's achievements in cinema.

Book excerpt: The Cinema of Wim Wenders: The Celluloid Highway is a new study of the films of this most prominent of German directors, and penetrates the seductive sounds and images for which he is best known. The book analyses the individual films in the context of a preoccupation central to all of Wenders' work and writings: why modern cinema - a recording art, solely composed of sounds and images - naturally developed into a primarily narrative medium, a domain traditionally associated with words and sentences? With its emphasis on analysing the films themselves, this book identifies and critically elucidates Wenders' chief artistic motivation: that the act of seeing can constitute a creative act in its own right.

The method is named after Wim Hof, as he is the one who brought these three components together. It is also named after Hof for practical reasons—he is already well-known for his many appearances on television showing what he can do with the cold. The method is based on Wim Hof’s many years of training in the natural environment. For a long time, he has tested his body's limits by exposing it to increasingly extreme challenges. One important discovery he made during this process was the ability to control his bodily functions in a way that science had not deemed possible. For example, anyone can lift their right hand and scratch their nose with their index finger, but no one can fight bacteria that have been injected into their arm. Hof can do that. He can influence and control his autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system regulates things like your body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing and determines whether your blood vessels dilate or contract. In other words, everything that automatically happens in your body. “Normal” people cannot control these functions. In the autonomic nervous system, everything happens automatically. The fact that Hof can control his autonomic functions has long been regarded as a medical wonder. But Hof sees it differently: he is convinced that everyone is theoretically capable of influencing their autonomic nervous systems. In 2014, he was proven correct. A scientific study conducted at the Radboud University Medical Centre with 24 test subjects showed that people who had practiced the Hof method were all able to control their autonomic nervous systems. Book excerpt: Just discovered yesterday (11 March 2020), on radio, the title of the classic pop instrumental after which 'It Came Upon A Sudden Morn' is sung: 'Sometimes When It Rains' by Secret Garden which sounds androgynous quirky to me, hence this 'Theme of the Original Androgyne', hence this second edition. 'Wim' (Wilhelm, William), after the classical 'Wien' (Vienna), is the more positive and important of the two. Apart from a bit of tidying up of the German grammar in 'Wim', the texts of the two song parodies, remain the same; so, too, the format, and practically everything else of the original duograph (published January 2020).

Book excerpt: What Doesn't Kill Us, a New York Times bestseller, traces our evolutionary journey back to a time when survival depended on how well we adapted to the environment around us. Our ancestors crossed deserts, mountains, and oceans without even a whisper of what anyone today might consider modern technology. Those feats of endurance now seem impossible in an age where we take comfort for granted. But what if we could regain some of our lost evolutionary strength by simulating the environmental conditions of our ancestors? Investigative journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney takes up the challenge to find out: Can we hack our bodies and use the environment to stimulate our inner biology? Helping him in his search for the answers is Dutch fitness guru Wim Hof, whose ability to control his body temperature in extreme cold has sparked a whirlwind of scientific study. Carney also enlists input from an Army scientist, a world-famous surfer, the founders of an obstacle course race movement, and ordinary people who have documented how they have cured autoimmune diseases, lost weight, and reversed diabetes. In the process, he chronicles his own transformational journey as he pushes his body and mind to the edge of endurance, a quest that culminates in a record-bending, 28-hour climb to the snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro wearing nothing but a pair of running shorts and sneakers. An ambitious blend of investigative reporting and participatory journalism, What Doesn’t Kill Us explores the true connection between the mind and the body and reveals the science that allows us to push past our perceived limitations.

Book excerpt: "The Iceman Speaks: Choices and Consequences" is an autobiography written to deter teenagers and young adults from a lifestyle of drugs, gangs, violence, and criminal activities. It focuses youth toward education, rewarding relationships with parents, making wise decisions, and the consequences of going down the wrong path. It consists of valid information as to how youths can avoid the traps that lurk in the shadows of society. This book speaks boldly about the rights of victims and the fate of criminals, and the uncensored graphic descriptions of life behind bars is expressed in detail. In today's society, far too many teenagers glorify themselves in violence and a renegade way of life, and far too many young people are filling up jails and prisons. This extraordinary book is designed to combat such negativity. It charts the life of a man, a man with excellent advice. Straightforward, no nonsense, thought provoking.
