Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet Phyllis Webb initiated new ways of seeing into the cultural “dark” of Western thought. By blurring the axis between “light” and “dark,” she redefined in positive terms women’s subjectivity and sexuality, which are traditionally assigned “dark” negative values. Seeing in the Dark includes perceptive discussions on a number of Webb’s collections, specifically Naked Poems, Wilson’s Bowl, Water and Light and Hanging Fire. Butling shows how Webb uses strategies of subversion, reversal and re-vision of prevailing traditions and tropes to facilitate “seeing in the dark.” She also provides a fascinating analysis of Webb criticism — tracing it over the past thirty years and revealing a shift in critical paradigms. A chapter on biography includes intriguing archival material. Pauline Butling offers important new ways of reading one of Canada’s finest poets. Seeing in the Dark is essential introductory material for the general reader and provides provocative penetrating analysis for literary scholars.

Book excerpt: Few took notice when the Seattle Seahawks selected Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Despite Wilson's accomplishments at the college level, few experts predicted success for the sub-6-foot signal caller. Two years later, Wilson and the Seahawks were Super Bowl champions. With Seattle's triumph in Super Bowl XLVIII, Wilson set the NFL record for most wins in a quarterback's first two seasons. In this commemorative edition, veteran Seattle sports writers Art Thiel and Steve Rudman trace the quarterback's ascent from North Carolina State to Wisconsin, with a detour into professional baseball, and through the Super Bowl XLVIII win. Featuring nearly 100 unique color photographs, Russell Wilson: Standing Tall captures the meteoric rise of one of the NFL's most surprising superstars.

This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War era spawned a host of anxieties in American society, and in response, Americans sought cultural institutions that reinforced their sense of national identity and held at bay their nagging insecurities. They saw football as a broad, though varied, embodiment of national values. College teams in particular were thought to exemplify the essence of America: strong men committed to hard work, teamwork, and overcoming pain. Toughness and defiance were primary virtues, and many found in the game an idealized American identity. In this book, Kurt Kemper charts the steadily increasing investment of American national ideals in the presentation and interpretation of college football, beginning with a survey of the college game during World War II. From the Army-Navy game immediately before Pearl Harbor, through the gradual expansion of bowl games and television coverage, to the public debates over racially integrated teams, college football became ever more a playing field for competing national ideals. Americans utilized football as a cultural mechanism to magnify American distinctiveness in the face of Soviet gains, and they positioned the game as a cultural force that embodied toughness, discipline, self-deprivation, and other values deemed crucial to confront the Soviet challenge. Americans applied the game in broad strokes to define an American way of life. They debated and interpreted issues such as segregation, free speech, and the role of the academy in the Cold War. College Football and American Culture in the Cold War Era offers a bold new contribution to our understanding of Americans' assumptions and uncertainties regarding the Cold War.

Book excerpt: Despite his success playing college football at the University of Wisconsin, many people did not think Russell Wilson could make it in the NFL as a quarterback. With his 5′11″ frame, many were concerned he wouldn't be tall enough to see over linemen and consistently move his team down the field. What he lacked in height, however, he made up for in intelligence and character—traits he would use to lead the Seattle Seahawks to their very first Super Bowl victory. Russell Wilson is a compelling profile of one of football's best and brightest quarterbacks. This lively biography provides readers with a behind-the-scenes look at Wilson's personality, life, and career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the dusty, undisturbed archive has been swept away in response to growing interest across disciplines in the materials they house and the desire to find and make meaning through an engagement with those materials. Archival studies scholars and archivists are developing related theoretical frameworks and practices that recognize that the archives are anything but static. Archival deposits are proliferating, and the architects, practitioners, and scholars engaged with them are scarcely able to keep abreast of them. Archives, archival theory, and archival practice are on the move. But what of the archives that were once safely housed and have since been lost, or are under threat? What of the urgency that underscores the appeals made on behalf of these archives? As scholars in this volume argue, archives—their materialization, their preservation, and the research produced about them—are moving in a different way: they are involved in an emotionally engaged and charged process, one that acts equally upon archival subjects and those engaged with them. So too do archives at once represent members of various communities and the fields of study drawn to them. Moving Archives grounds itself in the critical trajectory related to what Sara Ahmed calls “affective economies” to offer fresh insights about the process of archiving and approaching literary materials. These economies are not necessarily determined by ethical impulses, although many scholars have called out for such impulses to underwrite current archival practices; rather, they form the crucial affective contexts for the legitimization of archival caches in the present moment and for future use.
