Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wills, Trusts, and Estates: The Essentials (“Essentials”) offers a streamlined yet comprehensive presentation of wealth transfer law for an introductory law school course. Written by widely recognized scholars in the field, this text covers the core legal principles that are essential to a trusts and estates practice, including most concepts that are tested on the bar exam. For a fresh perspective, Essentials incorporates current events, lively cases, and engaging examples. It also enables students to maximize out-of-class preparation time by delivering information in an efficient, straightforward way. Each chapter contains: (1) clearly explained summaries of each doctrine, (2) explanatory narration accompanying all statutory authority, (3) thoroughly edited judicial opinions followed by analytical questions and answers, and (4) realistic problems, designed for classroom instruction, illustrating and applying doctrines and statutes. New to the 3rd Edition: Topical coverage has been updated by incorporating summaries of, or citations to, recently decided cases illustrating current trends and debates. Every chapter has been infused with a rich collection of new, relevant cases decided within the last few years. To avoid the accumulation of unnecessary bulk, content from prior editions was shortened or retired to make room for new developments: the Third Edition’s scope of topical coverage is broader, but its length is slightly shorter than the Second Edition. Prior coverage has been enriched with findings from cutting-edge empirical research to provide students with a realistic sense of how the practice of trusts and estates operates today. Professors and students will benefit from: Essentials makes a challenging course accessible, lively, and interactive. It is concise yet comprehensive, and adaptable for two, three, and four credit courses. Essentials emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills by presenting problem sets that allow students to apply newly learned legal doctrine in realistic scenarios, mostly based on litigated cases. Many problems are as detail-rich as the cases, which facilitates in-depth discussion of doctrinal nuance. Narrative responses for each problem set appear in the Teacher’s Manual. Students appreciate a straight-forward approach that does not “hide the ball”: legal doctrine is explained up front in plain English. Some students have found that the text’s plain English doctrinal summaries obviate the need to purchase a study supplement. For professors, streamlining the delivery of basic knowledge facilitates better use of class time, which can focus on analysis of problem sets and using state law distinctions from the uniform codes to reinforce student’s understanding of basic concepts. The questions and answers following the judicial decisions encourage student self-assessment. Most judicial opinions are accompanied by family tree diagrams (in the book and accompanying PowerPoint teaching slides), thereby allowing students to quickly ascertain the facts of each case and focus on the application of law. Problems and examples employ gender-inclusive facts and illustrations that feature same-sex families. The text makes a sincere effort to promote goals of inclusion without appearing to tokenize nontraditional relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a typical Wills, Trusts, and Estates (WTE) class there are both students who want to practice in WTE (either exclusively, or as part of a general practice), and those who need only to master the general concepts in order to pass the bar exam. Wills, Trusts, and Estates in Focus by Naomi R. Cahn, Alyssa DiRusso, and Susan Gary attends to the needs of both sets of students. For those who will practice in WTE, the concepts are presented in an engaging way and exemplified by realistic hypothetical scenarios that mirror practice and support the development of lawyering skills. For those who need only to pass the bar, the organization of the text is keyed to multi-state essay examination topics as presented on the multi-state bar exam. The well-crafted pedagogy of the Focus Series makes WTE concepts and procedure clear and accessible for all students. Case Previews shed light on each succinctly-edited case, provide legal context, and direct students to the issue at hand. Post-Case Follow-Ups review the decision and prepare students to apply the relevant legal principles to the set of exercises that follow, called Real Life Applications. Professors will appreciate the accessible approach of Wills, Trusts, and Estates in Focus, which combines straightforward narrative explanations with real-world examples, and problems designed to engage students in active learning. Features of Wills, Trusts, and Estates in Focus: Insightful authorship: The author team consists of three well-known academics with expertise in WTE and complementary areas such as family law, charities, elder law, and tax. Book excerpt: This book assesses the impact and effectiveness of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol) in 16 state parties. These countries are: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Eswatini, the Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Each of the chapters traces the impact that the Protocol has had on the policies, laws, court decisions, civil society activism, and legal education in the particular state. Each chapter also discusses the relationship of the state with the African human rights mechanisms. The book is an update of two prior volumes of essays, titled The impact of the African Charter and the Maputo Protocol in selected African states, published by PULP in 2012 and 2016, and edited by the Centre for Human Rights, Universityof Pretoria (Centre) and Victor Ayeni, respectively. The third edition, focused more narrowly on the Maputo Protocol, appears as the continent marks 20 years since the adoption of the Protocol on 11 July 2003. By 11 July 2023, 54 out of 55 African Union member states (with the exception of Morocco) have become party to the African Charter, and 44 of them have accepted the Maputo Protocol. The book is edited by and contains several chapters by alumni of the Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa programme of the Centre. The Centre intends to use this research as the basis for a continuously updated database on the impact of the African Charter and Maputo Protocol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SADC Protocol on Gender and Development is the only sub-regional instrument in the world that brings together global and continental commitments to gender equality in one instrument used to enhance accountability. The Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance is a network of country and regional NGOs that campaigned for the Protocol, it’s updating, implementation and tracking. Originally aligned to the Millennium Development Goals that expired in 2015, SADC Gender Ministers updated the Protocol and aligned it to the Sustainable development Goals (SDGs), Beijing Plus Twenty and the Africa Agenda 2063 in 2016. In July 2017, the Ministers adopted a Monitoring, Evaluation and Results Framework (MERF) that is now the basis of reporting. 2018 marks the tenth anniversary of the SADC Gender Protocol and the Barometer. Moving with the times, the Alliance has expanded the two yardsticks in the Barometer: the SADC Gender and Development Index (SGDI) and the Citizen Score Card (CSC). The Barometer incorporates many MERF and SDG indicators, as well as its own unique measures of voice, choice and control. The Barometer also introduces the Gender Responsive Assessment of Constitutions and Laws conducted by Alliance experts and networks around the region. A wealth of data, insights and analysis awaits all readers of the Barometer, that will also be made available online and in multi-media formats. The “SADC we want” is one in which citizens engage; step it up for gender equality, and make sure we achieve Planet 50/50 by 2030!
