Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The study of the reception of the ancient novel and of its literary and cultural heritage is one of the most appealing issues in the story of this literary genre. In no other genre has the vitality of classical tradition manifested itself in such a lasting and versatile manner as in the novel. However, this unifying, centripetal quality also worked in an opposite direction, spreading to and contaminating future literatures. Over the centuries, from Antiquity to the present time there have been many authors who drew inspiration from the Greek and Roman novels or used them as models, from Cervantes to Shakespeare, Sydney or Racine, not to mention the profound influence these texts exercised on, for instance, sixteenth-to eighteenth-century Italian, Portuguese and Spanish literature. Volume I is divided into sections that follow a chronological order, while Volume II deals with the reception of the ancient novel in literature and art. The first volume brings together an international group of scholars whose main aim is to analyse the survival of the ancient novel in the ancient world and in the Middle Ages, in the Renaissance, in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the modern era. The contributors to the second volume have undertaken the task of discussing the survival of the ancient novel in the visual arts, in literature and in the performative arts. The papers assembled in these two volumes on reception are at the forefront of scholarship in the field and will stimulate scholarly research on the ancient novel and its influence over the centuries up to modern times, thus enriching not only Classics but also modern languages and literatures, cultural history, literary theory and comparative literature."--

This book was released on 2002-11-21 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes are the fruits of a major European Science Foundation project and offer the first comprehensive study of republicanism as a shared European heritage. Whilst previous research has mainly focused on Atlantic traditions of republicanism, Professors Skinner and van Gelderen have assembled an internationally distinguished set of contributors whose studies highlight the richness and diversity of European traditions. Volume I focuses on the importance of anti-monarchism in Europe and analyses the relationship between citizenship and civic humanism, concluding with studies of the relationship between constitutionalism and republicanism in the period between 1500 and 1800. Volume II is devoted to the study of key republican values such as liberty, virtue, politeness and toleration. This 2002 volume also addresses the role of women in European republican traditions, and contains a number of in-depth studies of the relationship between republicanism and the rise of a commercial society in early modern Europe.

This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Herman von Schomberg was born into a prominent noble family in the Palatinate in 1615. He was a truly international figure: his father negotiated the marriage of Britain's Princess Royal (James I's daughter, Elizabeth) to the Elector Palatine of the Rhine. Having an English mother and a German father, he would go on to marry a French Huguenot lady, and fight in the armies of more than six nations. His career spans the mercenary system of the Thirty Years' War (1618-48) through to the formation of Europe's first true standing national armies during William III's wars in the 1690s. He was involved in the international politics and diplomacy of Louis XIV's reign, and that king's relations with Britain and the Netherlands in particular. He was also deeply concerned in the plight and exile of the Huguenots in France, and their later international presence in the armies of William of Orange. As a committed Protestant, he suffered the same prejudices in France as they, and his feeling for them is a vital comment on the strength of religious feeling among many high-ranking military leaders at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The speakers at the 2018 Helion conference offer a variety of insights into the depth and direction of research into the Thirty Years’ War, with particular reference to the war’s effect on the British Isles, the careers of the officers from its shores who participated in the conflict, and the ‘trickle-down’ effect of the war into the military thinking and technology of those isles. Keynote speaker Professor Steve Murdoch examines the changes in understanding of British military participation in the Thirty Years’ War from a once unsophisticated and dismissive approach to a more enriched and interesting field of study. Keith Dowen examines the work of Catholic Irish colonel Gerat Barry, which has been largely overlooked. Micha? Paradowski looks into the careers of three officers from the British Isles who fought abroad – Arthur Aston Jr, James Butler and Scotsman James Murray. Arran Johnston considers the importance of General Alexander Leslie and his officer corps, and the importance of their overseas service in the Thirty Years’ War as the basis for the effectiveness of the Scottish army in the Bishops’ Wars. Prof. Martyn Bennett explores the process of appointment of the rival command structures in 1642, at the start of the English Civil Wars. David Flintham considers the foreign, especially Dutch, influence on English fortification during the period, the methods employed and those who practiced them. Stephen Ede-Borrett examines contemporary vexillology, and how much the Thirty Years’ War influenced the military flags used by the English Armies from 1639 to 1651.
