Book excerpt: “In all the vast collection of books on the American Civil War there is no book like this one,” says Bruce Catton. Never before has such a stunning body of facts dealing with the war been gathered together in one place and presented in a coherent, useful, day-by-day narrative. And never before have statistics revealed human suffering of such heroic and tragic magnitude. The text begins in November, 1860, and ends with the conclusion of hostilities in May, 1865, and the start of reconstruction. It is designed to furnish the reader not only with information, but to tell a story. Here, in addition to the momentous events that are a familiar part of our history, the daily entries recount innumerable lesser military actions as well as some of the other activities and thoughts of men great and unknown engaged in America’s most costly war: · May 5, 1864—a private in the Army of Northern Virginia writes at the beginning of the Battle of the Wilderness, “It is a beautiful spring day on which all this bloody work is being done.” · May 6, 1864—Gen. Lee rides among his men and is shouted to the rear by his protective troops. · April 30, 1864—Joe David, five-year-old son of the Confederate President, dies after a fall from the high veranda of the White House in Richmond. · April 14, 1865—President Lincoln’s busy day includes a Cabinet meeting where he tells of his recurring dream of a ship moving with great rapidity toward a dark and indefinite shore; that night Mr. Lincoln attends a performance of a trifling comedy at Ford’s Theatre, “Our American Cousin”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captives in Blue, a study of Union prisoners in Confederate prisons, is a companion to Roger Pickenpaugh's earlier groundbreaking book Captives in Gray: The Civil War Prisons of the Union, rounding out his examination of Civil War prisoner of war facilities. In June of 1861, only a few weeks after the first shots at Fort Sumter ignited the Civil War, Union prisoners of war began to arrive in Southern prisons. One hundred and fifty years later Civil War prisons and the way prisoners of war were treated remain contentious topics. Partisans of each side continue to vilify the other for POW maltreatment. Roger Pickenpaugh's two studies of Civil War prisoners of war facilities complement one another and offer a thoughtful exploration of issues that captives taken from both sides of the Civil War faced. In Captives in Blue, Pickenpaugh tackles issues such as the ways the Confederate Army contended with the growing prison population, the variations in the policies and practices inthe different Confederate prison camps, the effects these policies and practices had on Union prisoners, and the logistics of prisoner exchanges. Digging further into prison policy and practices, Pickenpaugh explores conditions that arose from conscious government policy decisions and conditions that were the product of local officials or unique local situations. One issue unique to Captives in Blue is the way Confederate prisons and policies dealt with African American Union soldiers. Black soldiers held captive in Confederate prisons faced uncertain fates; many former slaves were returned to their former owners, while others were tortured in the camps. Drawing on prisoner diaries, Pickenpaugh provides compelling first-person accounts of life in prison camps often overlooked by scholars in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War, the two-day engagement near Shiloh, Tennessee, in April 1862 left more than 23,000 casualties. Fighting alongside seasoned veterans were more than 160 newly recruited regiments and other soldiers who had yet to encounter serious action. In the phrase of the time, these men came to Shiloh to “see the elephant.” Drawing on the letters, diaries, and other reminiscences of these raw recruits on both sides of the conflict, “Seeing the Elephant” gives a vivid and valuable primary account of the terrible struggle. From the wide range of voices included in this volume emerges a nuanced picture of the psychology and motivations of the novice soldiers and the ways in which their attitudes toward the war were affected by their experiences at Shiloh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William H.H. Fisher's pocket diary contains his daily entries during 1865 as a soldier in the Vermont Infantry, 7th Regiment, Company D, during the American Civil War stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas. The regiment moved from New Orleans to Mobile Point, Alabama, on 19 February until 2 June, and then to Texas (Brazos Santiago, Clarksville, and Brownsville) through the end of the year [the regiment mustered out on 14 March 1866]. He writes about camp activities (cleaning his gun and equipment, inspections, drills, guard duty); trips into New Orleans for meals, beer, and women; playing cards, reading a novel, writing letters to and receiving letters from his sisters Eliza and Mary, and cousins Sarah and Rubin McClellan and Maggie Randall; attending non-commissioned officers' school; the siege of Spanish Fort and occupation of Mobile, Alabama; and the move to Texas where on 24 June he complains about two brigades of black troops in camp who were so noisy they could not sleep. On the monthly cash accounts pages, he records his purchases and expenditures, with a separate page for his clothing costs. On a memorandum page at the back of the diary, Fisher writes a letter to his mother lamenting that while the war is over he still isn't home, hopes to see her soon, and notes that "you will see by my diary that I have passed through some ruff scenes but thank God those times are all gone by," and signs his name, company, and regiment at Brownsville, Texas [from this comment it appears that he sent the diary home for his family to read and keep].

This book was released on with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My belief in this war is as deep as any faith can be." One of the most personal, compelling, and enduring accounts of life as an American Civil War battlefield commander is in these pages. Wounded five times and promoted to General in January, 1865, Rutherford B. Hayes would later become the 19th President of the United States. In a diary and in letters, Hayes recounts in great detail major battles, his men, technology of arms, and the southern countryside and people. With wit and affection he writes to his beloved wife, Lucy, and his children, mother and uncle (his father died before his birth), and friends. "Sergeant Ritter had a bullet shot into his head lodging between the scalp and skull. He fell, but instantly jumped up saying, 'You must shoot lower if you want to kill me.'" Of Hayes, Ulysses S. Grant wrote, "[h]is conduct on the field was marked by conspicuous gallantry as well as the display of qualities of a higher order than that of mere personal daring." When approached by one of his men for permission to marry, Hayes tells us: "I asked him why he was in a hurry to marry; if he knew much about her; and what was her name. He replied, 'I like her looks;' and after confessing that he didn't know her name, that he thought it was Eliza Watson(!), he admitted that the thing was this: Eight hundred dollars had been left to him payable on his marriage, and he wanted the money out at interest!" At times he becomes introspective and philosophical: "Queer world! We fret our little hour, are happy and pass away. Away! Where to? This longing after immortality!" At other times, he talks of good times and the friendships among officers and men: "Well, what good times we have had! Wit, anecdote, song, feast, wine, and good fellowship—gentlemen and scholars." Unlike many of the wonderful accounts by everyday foot soldiers, this perspective by an educated commander and future president provides you with a tale that is both broad and personal. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
