Book excerpt: This is the first book on Einthoven in the English language; two earlier extensive reviews of his life and work were published in Dutch by his former co workers Hoogerwerf and de Waart, in 1946 and 1957 respectively; the latter provides a brief summary in English; the former also wrote a succinct article on 73 Einthoven in English. 74 Hoogerwerf's review mentioned above was published as a chapter in "Helden der Wetenschap" i. e. "Heroes of Science," a book on Dutch Nobel Prize winners which has a somewhat romantic character corresponding 108 with the title. On the other hand, de Waart's book gives more scientific and technical details, and provides full reference to Einthoven's papers, his assistants and the doctoral theses written under Einthoven's guidance. On the whole there fore the latter is the best source of information and I have used it often and gratefully. At the same time it requires more effort to read; the other book may have had a wider reading public. The main reason however for which I decided to write a book on Eintho ven and was encouraged to do so by the Einthoven Foundation, is not the want of an English text, but the fact that more information has become available in the meantime.

Book excerpt: Offers a guide for a complete understanding of the disease and conditions most frequently revealed in ECGs recorded in the acute, critical, and emergency care settings Electrocardiogram in Clinical Medicine offers an authoritative guide to ECG interpretation that contains a focus and perspective from each of the three primary areas of medical care: acute care, critical care and emergency care. It can be used as a companion with the book ECGs for the Emergency Physician I & II (by Mattu and Brady) or as a stand-alone text. These three books can be described as a cumulative EGG reference for the medical provider who uses the electrocardiogram on a regular basis. Electrocardiogram in Clinical Medicine includes sections on all primary areas of ECG interpretation and application as well as sections that highlight use, devices and strategies. The medical content covers acute coronary syndromes and all related issues, other diseases of the myocardium, morphologic syndromes, toxicology and paediatrics; dysrhythmias will also be covered in detail. This important resource: • Goes beyond pattern recognition in ECGs to offer a real understanding of the clinical syndromes evidenced in ECGs and implications for treatment • Covers the indications, advantages and pitfalls of the use of ECGs for diagnosis in all acute care settings, from EMS to ED to Critical Care • Examines the ECG in toxic, metabolic and environmental presentations; critical information for acute care clinicians who need to be able to differentiate ODs, poisoning and other environmental causes from MI or other cardiac events • Facilitates clinical decision-making Written for practicing ER, general medicine, family practice, hospitalist and ICU physicians and medical students, Electrocardiogram in Clinical Medicine is an important book for the accurate interpretation of EGG results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not difficult to explain why it was decided to reproduce some of Einthoven's papers with photographic fidelity. The immense amount of information provided by electrocardiography, which in spite of its natural limitations has become one of the main diagnostic procedures in cardio logy and at the same time a cornerstone of scientific research, is universally acknowledged. On the other hand, we have also come to realize how important it is not only to know the historical perspective of cardiology, or any other field of medicine, but also to study the original sources from which our knowledge stems, without the contamination of later opinions or traditional interpretation, however well founded they may seem. * There is also a reason for the timing of this publication of facsimile reprints: Einthoven died 50 years ago; about 75 years ago the string galvanometer was invented and used for electrocardiography (first publication on the instrument in 1901, first publication of electrocardio grams taken with it in 1903). The papers, which are reproduced here, constitute a selection, necessarily limited and arbitrarily chosen. I should like to add, that the selection was made from several points of view. In the first place, only those articles were selected which had a definite and direct relation with cardiology, in particular electrocardiography. Although it is obvious from Einthoven's bibliography (chapter 2) that several of his papers deal with other subjects, the prominent place which electrocardiography occupies in Einthoven's work, justifies this choice.

Book excerpt: "The History of Telemedicine provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the evolution of telemedicine from ancient Greece to the present time. It places the development of this field in the context of the never ending quest for providing equitable access to health care and re-casting the medical care landscape, while trying to assure quality and contain cost. The book describes the origin of modern telemedicine in experiments such as those by Willem Einthoven's 1905 long distance transfer of electrocardiograms through the pioneering era of teleradiology and telepsychiatry of the 1950s, its coming of age in the 1970s, its maturation in the 1990s, and finally the recent transformation and adoption by the mainstream." -- BOOK PUBLISHER WEBSITE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines clear explanatory text with a wealth of images of ECG recordings in order to provide an accessible, up-to-date source of information and guide to interpretation for all professionals seeking to increase their expertise in electrocardiography. ECG results are presented and discussed for a wide range of conditions, including all forms of arrhythmia, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, bundle branch blocks, ischemic cardiomyopathy, atrial and ventricular enlargement, pericardial and myocardial diseases, diseases of the pulmonary circulation, and post pacemaker implantation. Normal ECG findings are fully described, and helpful introductory information is included on the principles of electrophysiology. The practically oriented text accompanying the ECG recordings covers both electrophysiological and clinical aspects. More than 100 years after its first use by Willem Einthoven, electrocardiography continues to be the first diagnostic tool applied in most cardiac patients. This text atlas provides a sound basis for the correct ECG interpretation essential for appropriate patient management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides a short survey of the life and work of Willem Einthoven, this book contains a selection of the most appealing recordings and demonstrates the significance of his scientific explorations. "I want to know" was Willem Einthoven's usual answer when congratulated on the success of his new scientific achievements. With the development of the string galvanometer, he became the founder of electrocardiography, which today remains the most popular and cost-effective tool for obtaining heart related data. The wide range of experimental studies conducted by Einthoven and his fellows in the fields of (amongst others), eye function, the nervous system, vagal nerves and respiration led to the award of the Nobel Prize on Physiology and Medicine. The results of his experiments and electrocardiographic recordings of patients from 1886 to 1927 were registered on hundreds of "glass negatives". These have remained stored in the Boerhaave State Museum, Leiden. Now, for the first time these recordings have been carefully analyzed and considered in their historical context. The remaining recordings can be seen on 'www.rijksmuseumboerhaave.nl'.
