Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original vision for redefining American manhood in an age of anxiety and an era of socioeconomic change, Heroic Fraternities examines the impact of the “frat film” genre (invented by Animal House) on ideas about “real” men and “real” fraternities that permeate the culture, and led the news media to increasingly equate the supermajority of fraternity men with the outrages of a few. The ugliest cases have sparked a drive to Abolish Greek Life, even though studies show rates of misconduct don’t change when fraternities disappear. Common sense suggests that young men are struggling to build balanced adult male identities in a world where campus leaders call for them to be “less bad” and activists acknowledge male allies with #notallmen. The irony of the abolition movement is what they seek to destroy is also one of the more certain routes to save America’s men from the alienation of a society in crisis. Fraternities are uniquely positioned to address soaring rates of substance abuse, anger, and despair by providing men with the support, friendship, and multiple role models they need. Examining fraternity life in the SEC, ACC, and Big Ten conferences, this book presents reasons for hope—and heroism—at all colleges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Women's Spirituality' is an enlarged and revised edition of the widely used anthology that looks at the spiritual and psychological dimensions of women's lives. Using classical and contemporary texts, the present volume illuminates the way feminist issues find grounding in great spiritual teachers such as Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Ignatius Loyola, and Jane de Chantal. Four sections develop the central theme. The first considers contemporary issues: women in ministry, different forms of feminist spirituality, and sexism in the church. The second provides contemporary resources for psychological development. The third gives examples of spiritual development in the biblical, Ignatian, Carmelite, and Salesian traditions. The final section considers new visions of women's spirituality in the present day. Contributors to this volume include Anne Carr, Joann Wolski Conn, Kathleen Fischer, Constance FitzGerald, James Fowler, Carol Gilligan, Rosemary Haughton, Elizabeth A. Johnson, Robert Kegan, John McDargh, Jean Baker Miller, Sandra M. Schneiders, Elisabeth Schÿssler Fiorenza, Mary Jo Weaver, Rowan Williams, and Wendy M. Wright.

Book excerpt: This book explores the way that gender relationships changed under Christendom and then after Christendom, challenging us to rethink gender relations in both church and society. Fran Porter goes beyond the personal aspects of gender identity to structural, philosophical and theological considerations; and offers a paradigm for gender relationships different to the oppositional models that currently prevail. "This is an accessible read about the complex topic of gender, Christendom and post Christendom. For those seeking to explore the history of gender relationships in the church from the first century this is an excellent introduction." Dianne Tidball, East Midland Baptist Association, UK "Through careful handling of the argument, Fran Porter helps us to glimpse that vision of what the new community of Christ, the new kin-work he inaugurated, could look like - and how the church, in the way she is in the world, can be radical good news for men and women everywhere." Sian Murray Williams, Tutor in Worship Studies at Bristol Baptist College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are plenty of books by men, for men, on the topic of “Christian masculinity,” these books generally fail to address men’s propensities for violence and the traditional inequity between men and women, often endorsing inequity and sanctioning aggressive behavior as an appropriate “manly” response to conflict. Peaceful at Heart cuts through this conversation by offering a uniquely Anabaptist Christian perspective on masculinity. The vision of masculinity presented in this book is more peaceful, just, caring, life-giving for men, and more sensitive to women and children than both traditional images of masculinity and the hypermasculine images promoted by contemporary popular culture and wider evangelical Christianity. Peaceful at Heart addresses men and masculinity using Anabaptist theological themes of discipleship, community, and peace. As a collaborative project by men, for men, this book demonstrates through personal narratives, theological reflection, and practical guidance the importance of collective discernment, accountability, and mutual encouragement regarding how to live as a peaceful man in a violent world.

While news media often sensationalize fighting sports, churches see them as a way to appeal to male congregants, presenting a peace-loving yet tough model of discipleship. From martial arts programs at suburban churches to urban boxing ministries geared towards at-risk youth, this book examines the substantial history of church sponsored training in combat sports, and presents arguments by Christian ethicists about their compatibility with church teachings and settings. Interviews with boxing and martial arts ministry leaders describe their programs and the relationship between fight sports and faith.

Book excerpt: During the last three decades of the twentieth century there has been widespread controversy over, and alteration of, gender roles in the United States. To a large extent the ferment originated in, and was influenced by, the general social upheaval of the sixties. A major result has been a well-publicized transformation in the options, social status, and perception of American women. But what affected women also affected men, and a similar movement among American males therefore accompanied the feminist movement. In Uneasy Males, Edward Gambill provides an historical overview of the American "men's movement". The book covers pro-feminist and anti-feminist responses, and the organization and activities of men's rights, father's rights, "mythopoetic", religious, and black male groups. While much of the focus is on the development and operation of formal organizations, there is also coverage of changes apart from these structures. Uneasy males thus provide readers with an understanding of, and thought-provoking question about, gender roles in the United States.

Book excerpt: La Vida Sacra: Contemporary Hispanic Sacramental Theology is an original, insightful approach to the sacraments from the perspective and actual practice of Latinos over the centuries. It offers a distinctive take on the actual belief and enculturation of the sacraments in the Latino experience and context. Due to the growing presence of Hispanics in this country, churches are looking for new and innovative ways to fit them into their congregations. The existence of Hispanics and, more importantly, the value of their religious experiences are being gradually accepted in theological societies. Eduardo Fernández and James Empereur's new book fills the need for a more comprehensive and richer context for sacramental theology. As the newest book in the Celebrating Faith Series, it is ideal for theology courses, as well as directors of ministerial programs and their students who are looking to place Hispanic sacramentality in the larger framework of sacramental theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ontario Boys explores the preoccupation with boyhood in Ontario during the immediate postwar period, 1945–1960. It argues that a traditional version of boyhood was being rejuvenated in response to a population fraught with uncertainty, and suffering from insecurity, instability, and gender anxiety brought on by depression-era and wartime disruptions in marital, familial, and labour relations, as well as mass migration, rapid postwar economic changes, the emergence of the Cold War, and the looming threat of atomic annihilation. In this sociopolitical and cultural context, concerned adults began to cast the fate of the postwar world onto children, in particular boys. In the decade and a half immediately following World War II, the version of boyhood that became the ideal was one that stressed selflessness, togetherness, honesty, fearlessness, frank determination, and emotional toughness. It was thought that investing boys with this version of masculinity was essential if they were to grow into the kind of citizens capable of governing, protecting, and defending the nation, and, of course, maintaining and regulating the social order. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, Ontario Boys demonstrates that, although girls were expected and encouraged to internalize a “special kind” of citizenship, as caregivers and educators of children and nurturers of men, the gendered content and language employed indicated that active public citizenship and democracy was intended for boys. An “appropriate” boyhood in the postwar period became, if nothing else, a metaphor for the survival of the nation.

Should the legal status of corporate ?persons? be challenged as a religious violation ? a gross infringement of the supposed boundary between church and state? He makes a pretty good case for that. Have we done a good job of keeping religion out of government but a miserable job of keeping government out of religion? He makes a pretty good case for that. Is Darwinism a science? Or a religion?
