Since flowers are exceedingly variable in colour, and in no case constant, it is difficult to arrive at their true colour value; and, besides, most persons have their own ideas regarding colours. Purple, for instance, ranges from lightest to darkest blue, but is more or less generally understood to be a reddish blue, and it is largely a matter of qualifying its shade. Therefore, the simple primary colours have been selected as a basis, and the flowers have been arbitrarily divided into Red, Pink, Yellow and Orange, Greenish and White, and Blue and Purple groups. The student is thus enabled to turn immediately to the group of any particular flower he may desire, according to its dominating colour, without searching through an indefinite mass of descriptive matter. A small magnifying glass will reveal wonders as remarkable as those of fairyland. Such a glass, together with a few needles and a sharp penknife for dissecting the specimens, makes a satisfactory outfit for general study. The Congress came to an agreement respecting the botanical names and Classifications Of American owers, which we hope will not need to be revised. Some Old names, dear to us, have Come back. Greater simplicity as well as perma nency has been aimed for. The first way Of telling owers is by color. It is the simplest means Of identification, and to this the most space is given. Secondly, owers may be identified by their dwelling places or habitats. Thirdly, owers are shown by seasons, the time and order Of their blossoms. This book is a Guide to the owering plants Of the Atlantic seaboard, New England, the Middle States, and, to a limited extent, Of the Southern States. It is interest ing to note the wide latitudinal range Of some plants along the entire Atlantic coast. As the climate grows warmer, plants ascend the mountains, and New Eng land vegetation reappears two thousand feet high in Vir ginia. Plants which are local, and but seldom found, the size Of this book excludes. Plant immigrants, unless well established, are not enumerated. Taking New York as the center of a wide circle, any per son possessing no knowledge Of botany (except such as may be acquired from the Explanation Of Technical Terms) may identify any ower and learn something Of its story.
