Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Flowers Every Child Should Know: Arranged According to Color With Reliable Descriptions of the More Common Species of the United States and Canada The flowers are divided first, according to colour, then, according to natural classification. Since flowers are exceedingly variable in colour, and in no case constant, it is difficult to arrive at their true colour value; and, besides, most persons have their own ideas regarding colours. Purple, for instance, ranges from lightest to darkest blue, but is more or less generally understood to be a reddish blue, and it is largely a matter of qualifying its shade. Therefore, the simple primary colours have been selected as a basis, and the flowers have been arbitrarily divided into Red, Pink, Yellow and Orange, Greenish and White, and Blue and Purple groups. The student is thus enabled to turn immediately to the group of any particular flower he may desire, according to its dominating colour, without searching through an indefinite mass of descriptive matter. A small magnifying glass will reveal wonders as remarkable as those of fairyland. Such a glass, together with a few needles and a sharp penknife for dissecting the specimens, makes a satisfactory outfit for general study. A small note - book for records and a tin collecting box are also strongly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From a lonely childhood in the Piney Woods of East Texas to an exciting life in the White House, Lady Bird Johnson loved these wildflowers with all her heart. They were her companions in her youth, greeting her everywhere as she explored wild forests, bayous, and hills. Later, as First Lady, she sought to bring the beauty of wildflowers to America's cities and highways. She wanted to make sure every child could enjoy the splendor of wildflowers. In this warm, engaging look at the life of a great First Lady, Kathi Appelt tells the story behind Lady Bird Johnson's environmental vision. Joy Fisher Hein's colorful wildflowers burst from every page, inviting us to share in Lady Bird's love for natural beauty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As it sweeps through the Cascade Mountains, the Columbia River passes through an area of jagged cliffs and tumbling waterfalls--the Columbia Gorge. This Gorge, with its wide range of elevations and microclimates, is home to more species of flowering plants than any other region in the Pacific Northwest. Compiled by author and photographer Russ Jolley, this remarkable guide contains 744 of these plants. Each full-color photograph is accompanied by and entry listing the wildflower's common and scientific names, general habitat, blooming dates, and specific plant locations. To make the wildflowers easier to find, all blooming locations are within easy walking distance of roads and trailheads. Jolley also describes a series of field trips for readers unfamiliar with this area. Included, too, are a fold-out map of the Gorge, a convenient list of place names, and a table of blooming dates for all 744 flowering plants.
