Book excerpt: Nudinits is back with a guide to getting it all out in the open. Bernard and Barbara, from the eccentric village of Woolly Bush, deep in the English countryside, are here to give you some helpful reflections on outdoor life. Woolly Bush has all the standard features of a typical village – the cake shop, the vegetable show, the vicar – apart from two big differences: it’s all made of wool, and none of the characters have clothes on! With all the usual bare-bottomed fun from nudinits, brimming with double entendres and jollity, this outdoorsy set of pictures and comments will have you laughing out loud. Bursting with British eccentricity and the odd bare bottom, this enchanting book will appeal to humour-lovers and knitting fans alike. N.B. This book does not contain any knitting patterns. For nudinits knitting patterns, check out Nudinits: Bare-bottomed Fun from the Village of Woolly Bush and Nudinits: A Naughty Knitted Noel.

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The Accidental Billionaires and The 37th Parallel tells the fascinating Jurassic Park-like story of the genetic restoration of an extinct species—the woolly mammoth. “Paced like a thriller…Woolly reanimates history and breathes new life into the narrative of nature” (NPR). With his “unparalleled” (Booklist, starred review) writing, Ben Mezrich takes us on an exhilarating and true adventure story from the icy terrain of Siberia to the cutting-edge genetic labs of Harvard University. A group of scientists work to make fantasy reality by splicing DNA from frozen woolly mammoth into the DNA of a modern elephant. Will they be able to turn the hybrid cells into a functional embryo and potentially bring the extinct creatures to our modern world? Along with this team of brilliant scientists, a millionaire plans to build the world’s first Pleistocene Park and populate a huge tract of the Siberian tundra with ancient herbivores as a hedge against an environmental ticking time bomb that is hidden deep within the permafrost. More than a story of genetics, this is a thriller illuminating the real-life race against global warming, of the incredible power of modern technology, of the brave fossil hunters who battle polar bears and extreme weather conditions, and the ethical quandary of cloning extinct animals. This “rollercoaster quest for the past and future” (Christian Science Monitor) asks us if we can right the wrongs of our ancestors who hunted the woolly mammoth to extinction and at what cost?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a long-time Deputy Sheriff in Marin County, Weldon lived through some very interesting times relevant to law enforcement, participating in fighting the most vicious crimes emananting from the hottest issues of the day. His many memorable experiences, in and out of uniform, were always in the interests of keeping the peace. The book's subtitle, ". . . in Wild and Wooly West Marin; a collection of vivid vignettes," says a lot about its contents. The author's tales brim with a variety of countercultural events, and the many ways that humans succumb to evil and occasionally rise in redemption. Many revelations are devilishly humorous but all reflect the image of a conscientious man who has, fortunately for Marin County and California society, invested the major part of his life in keeping the sane balance between extremes of behavior found in the Golden State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of black cowpunchers drove cattle up the Chisholm Trail after the Civil War, but only Nat Love wrote about his experiences. Born to slaves in Davidson County, Tennessee, the newly freed Love struck out for Kansas after the war. He was fifteen and already endowed with a reckless and romantic readiness. In wide-open Dodge City he joined up with an outfit from the Texas Panhandle to begin a career riding the range and fighting Indians, outlaws, and the elements. Years later he would say, "I had an unusually adventurous life". That was rare understatement. More characteristic was Love's claim: "I carry the marks of fourteen bullet wounds on different parts of my body, most any one of which would be sufficient to kill an ordinary man, but I am not even crippled". In 1876 a virtuoso rodeo performance in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, won him the moniker of Deadwood Dick. He became known as DD all over the West, entering into dime novels as a mysteriously dark and heroic presence. This vivid autobiography includes encounters with Bat Masterson and Billy the Kid, a soon-after view of the Custer battlefield, and a successful courtship. Love left the range in 1890, the year of the official closing of the frontier. Then, as a Pullman train conductor he traveled his old trails, and those good times bring his story to a satisfying end.

Book excerpt: Wild and Woolly Days is about one small slice of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a lonely land of swamps and trees, and then more trees. It is about the people who came to settle there. Lumberjacks and landlookers, crooks and capitalists, pioneers and preachers, homesick immigrants and overworked laborers, they all wrestled with the land, daring to dream of new farms and new factories and new fortunes. They lived through angry feuds and deadly fires, shocking murders and mischievous mayhem. They battled blizzards, economic crashes, and cruel epidemics. They fought on. They built businesses, families, neighborhoods, and governments. They established churches and schools and hospitals. They created communities. These are the stories of their wild and woolly days.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when life is too chaotic? How about felting a gnome? Or 365 of them, one for each day of the year. Artist and wool crafter Jessica Peill-Meininghaus decided that she needed a project to teach herself follow-through in life. She settled on making one of her popular felted-wool gnomes every day for a year. With pipe cleaners and wool roving, amidst the chaos of raising four children and moving cross-country, Peill-Meininghaus felted her way through hundreds of charming, pointy-hatted, often bearded characters. Lavishly decorated with photos of each charming creation, The Gnome Project is the surprising and magical story of what happens when we commit to something small. (Hint: It's something very big, as in making life more meaningful.) Here is her inspirational tale, complete with gnome-making instructions.
