Book excerpt: This work covers two bases, both performance optimization strategies and a complete introduction to mathematical procedures required for a successful circuit design. It starts from the basics of mathematical procedures and circuit analysis before moving on to the more advanced topics of system optimization and synthesis, along with the complete mathematical apparatus required. The authors have been at pains to make the material accessible by limiting the mathematics to the necessary minimum.

Book excerpt: With the realization of high frequency transistors having current and power gain-bandwidth products in the gigacycle region, ultra wideband amplifiers are now possible. This report presents an analysis of the basic high frequency transistor configurations along with experimental data obtained from both single and multiple stage amplifiers having bandwidths ranging from 200 to 800 MHz. Included is a discussion of the important parameters that determine transistors high frequency response along with problems associated with layout and component selection. Various techniques for trading gain for bandwidth are treated and experimentally reported. A new approach for designing wideband cascaded amplifiers that require a minimum of adjustments yet yield near optimum performance is given. (Author).

Book excerpt: The problem of wide bandwidth and flat in-band gain response for microwave transistor amplifiers has been reduced to the optimization of a number of important variables from computer-prepared design charts. Through the general flexibility of the computer-generated data, a large variety of amplifier responses are possible using distributed circuit matching networks. The work of H.A. Wheeler is presented in order to accomplish the transition for the TEM (transverse electromagnetic) solution obtained for transistor response to the microwave integrated circuit technology (microstrip). As experimental verification of the overall design procedure, single-stage and two-stage octave wide transistor amplifiers were fabricated on 1 inch by 1 inch and 1 inch by 1/2 inch 20-mil-thick alumina, respectively. The experimental data gained from these units showed excellent correlation to the computer-predicted response. (Author).

Book excerpt: Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) are commonly used to amplify signals that are too weak for direct processing for example in radio or cable receivers. Traditionally, low noise amplifiers are implemented via tuned amplifiers, exploiting inductors and capacitors in resonating LC-circuits. This can render very low noise but only in a relatively narrow frequency band close to resonance. There is a clear trend to use more bandwidth for communication, both via cables (e.g. cable TV, internet) and wireless links (e.g. satellite links and Ultra Wideband Band). Hence wideband low-noise amplifier techniques are very much needed. Wideband Low Noise Amplifiers Exploiting Thermal Noise Cancellation explores techniques to realize wideband amplifiers, capable of impedance matching and still achieving a low noise figure well below 3dB. This can be achieved with a new noise cancelling technique as described in this book. By using this technique, the thermal noise of the input transistor of the LNA can be cancelled while the wanted signal is amplified! The book gives a detailed analysis of this technique and presents several new amplifier circuits. This book is directly relevant for IC designers and researchers working on integrated transceivers. Although the focus is on CMOS circuits, the techniques can just as well be applied to other IC technologies, e.g. bipolar and GaAs, and even in discrete component technologies.

Book excerpt: Analog circuit design has grown in importance because so many circuits cannot be realized with digital techniques. Examples are receiver front-ends, particle detector circuits, etc. Actually, all circuits which require high precision, high speed and low power consumption need analog solutions. High precision also needs low noise. Much has been written already on low noise design and optimization for low noise. Very little is available however if the source is not resistive but capacitive or inductive as is the case with antennas or semiconductor detectors. This book provides design techniques for these types of optimization. This book is thus intended firstly for engineers on senior or graduate level who have already designed their first operational amplifiers and want to go further. It is especially for engineers who do not want just a circuit but the best circuit. Design techniques are given that lead to the best performance within a certain technology. Moreover, this is done for all important technologies such as bipolar, CMOS and BiCMOS. Secondly, this book is intended for engineers who want to understand what they are doing. The design techniques are intended to provide insight. In this way, the design techniques can easily be extended to other circuits as well. Also, the design techniques form a first step towards design automation. Thirdly, this book is intended for analog design engineers who want to become familiar with both bipolar and CMOS technologies and who want to learn more about which transistor to choose in BiCMOS.

Transistor amplifiers have been designed which will present high input impedance, but the frequency response is limited to low frequencies, hundreds of kilocycles. This thesis investigates both field effect transistors and positive feedback as applied to high input impedance wide band amplifier design. The field effect transistor, in the source-follower configuration, is shown to offer high input impedance, wide-band amplification, and low output impedance. Positive feedback is shown to increase considerably the input impedance without any danger of self-oscillations. The generalized theory is presented using a model amplifier consisting of an input stage containing the field effect transistor, followed by two transistor stages. All the necessary criteria are derived from this model. An experimental amplifier was built and tested in the laboratory to check the validity of the theoretical analysis. The input impedance of this amplifier rneasured 20.7 M[ohm] of resistance shunted by 1.7 pf. of capacitance; the band-width extended from about 30 cps to about 10 Mc.

Book excerpt: Highly Linear Integrated Wideband Amplifiers: Design and Analysis Techniques for Frequencies from Audio to RF deals with the complicated issues involved in the design of high-linearity integrated wideband amplifiers for different operating frequencies. The book demonstrates these principles using a number of high-performance designs. New topologies for high linearity are presented, as well as a novel method for estimating the intermodulation distortion of a wideband signal. One of the most exciting results presented is an enhanced feedback configuration called feedback boosting that is capable of very low distortion. Also important is a statistical method for relating the intermodulation distortion of a wideband signal to the total harmonic distortion (THD) of a single tone. The THD, as opposed to the intermodulation distortion of the wideband signal, is easy to measure and use as a design parameter. Three different applications where high linearity is needed are identified, namely audio power amplifiers, wideband IF amplifiers and RF power amplifiers. For these applications high-performance integrated amplifier designs using novel topologies are presented together with measurement results. The audio amplifiers are built in CMOS and are capable of driving 8Omega loudspeaker loads directly without using any external components. One of the designs can operate on a supply voltage down to 1.5V. Both bipolar and CMOS wideband IF amplifiers are built; they are fully differential and have linearity from DC to 20 MHz. Finally, an RF power amplifier is built in CMOS, without using inductors, in order to investigate what performance can be achieved without them. Highly Linear Integrated Wideband Amplifiers: Design and Analysis Techniques for Frequencies from Audio to RF is an excellent reference for researchers and designers of integrated amplifiers, and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s booming expanse of personal wireless radio communications is a rich source of new challenges for the designer of the underlying enabling te- nologies. Personal communication networks are designed from a fundam- tally different perspective than broadcast service networks, such as radio and television. While the focus of the latter is on reliability and user comfort, the emphasis of personal communication devices is on throughput and mobility. However, because the wireless channel is a shared transmission medium with only very limited resources, a trade-off has to be made between mobility and the number of simultaneous users in a con?ned geographical area. Accord- 1 ing to Shannon’s theorem on channel capacity, the overall data throughput of a communication channel bene?ts from either a linear increase of the tra- mission bandwidth, or an (equivalent) exponential increase in signal quality. Consequently, it is more bene?cial to think in terms of channel bandwidth than it is to pursue a high transmission power. All the above elements are embodied in the concept of spatial ef?ciency. By describing the throughput of a system 2 in terms of bits/s/Hz/m , spatial ef?ciency takes into account that the use of a low transmission power reduces the operational range of a radio transmission, and as such enables a higher reuse rate of the same frequency spectrum.
