Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago, during research for a genealogy class I was teaching, I discovered a little-known fact about a few brave women during the American Civil War era and was so intrigued, I began pursuing it further. Because I have always enjoyed the slow reveal of a mystery, I began an historical fiction in a mystery format, with the working title Restless Hearts. I could certainly empathize with the restless part; I thrive on change and adventure. A friend said she had the impression that this book would be a romance novel, so I renamed the book Why Weep and Wait? a quote from a letter written to a soldier by his wife. Since I took that title, the story just seemed to pour out of me, changing course often, as if someone else were writing it, because it needed to be told. Why Weep and Wait? could be true. Its set against the credible and true-to-life background of the Civil War, and extensive research went into the creation of the characters, whom I know youll come to admire and love. Id like to see it as a motion picture someday; believe me, its that compelling.

This book was released on 2003-06-19 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the lives and works of nine Northern women who wrote during the Civil War period, examining the ways in which, through their writing, they engaged in the national debates of the time. Lyde Sizer shows that from the 1850 publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin through Reconstruction, these women, as well as a larger mosaic of lesser-known writers, used their mainstream writings publicly to make sense of war, womanhood, Union, slavery, republicanism, heroism, and death. Among the authors discussed are Lydia Maria Child, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sara Willis Parton (Fanny Fern), Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Mrs. E. D. E. N. Southworth, Mary Abigail Dodge (Gail Hamilton), Louisa May Alcott, Rebecca Harding Davis, and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. Although direct political or partisan power was denied to women, these writers actively participated in discussions of national issues through their sentimental novels, short stories, essays, poetry, and letters to the editor. Sizer pays close attention to how these mostly middle-class women attempted to create a "rhetoric of unity," giving common purpose to women despite differences in class, race, and politics. This theme of unity was ultimately deployed to establish a white middle-class standard of womanhood, meant to exclude as well as include.

Book excerpt: A historico-critical study of the whole of the Book of Judges, based on the latest developments in the history and archaeology of Israel. A six stages scenario is presented for the growth of Judges: from a Retterbuch in Assyrian Bethel, Jerusalem under Kings Manasseh and Josiah, Babylonian Mizpah and its fight with Persian Jerusalem until the insertion of the book in the Historical Books, each editorial stage is set into a precise historical context. Richter's Retterbuch is confirmed (excepted for the date), Noth's Deuteronomistic History is discarded while a new proposal for the canonization of the Former Prophets is offered.

Book excerpt: These stories are offered as refl ections on the size, cause, scope and anguish of the Civil War, yet there is about them an intimacy of participation. It is difficult to capture both in a story of that war's magnitude without caricatures of the people or distortions of the events to accommodate the characters. Here they are, one author's offerings, possibly to put alongside the stories of Ambrose Bierce and William Faulkner. That would be an honor, for certain! The anecdotes are just that - relevant pieces of the overall war story.
