Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard enough for anyone other than a dedicated scholar to read all 18 cantos of the great epic Mah?bh?rata let alone the R?m?ya?a, Bh?gavata and the many Pur???s as well. In view of this and particularly today’s fast-paced life, this book presents the stories of characters from all the books of Hindu Mythology in a compact English version. While reading a Telugu book titled ‘P?rva G?th? Lahari’, the author was surprised to discover many fascinating stories and substories even in books with which he was quite familiar. He was so impressed that he decided to make the stories accessible to a wider audience of Indians as well as the Indian diaspora by writing an English version based on the Telugu book. A few examples of surprising details will illustrate the point: • Several great warriors on the Kaurava side in the Mah?bh?rata war were known to be invincible to anyone in the P?n?ava forces. The means of making the greatest of them, Bh?shma disarm himself was devised several lifetimes earlier in Brahma’s court. • The wife of Sage Atri was able to turn the Trim?rtis into infants, and another ordinary woman was able to stop the dawn of a new day due to the spiritual power from being Pativratas. • Even Vish?u was not immune from accountability for His actions, facing hardships in one incarnation from ??pas given to Him in a previous incarnation. Whether one is inclined to read the whole book as a nonfiction narrative or use it as a reference to check particular stories, there is much here to savour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ver since Sir W Jones translated Kalidasa's Sakuntalam into English (1789), many scholars from the West have shown interest in Indian Sanskrit literature. By 1847, 607 works had been translated. Among them, the Gita is one of the most translated works. The Gita and Bhagavatam are the essence of the Vedas, the ancient Indian texts of knowledge. While the 700-sloka Gita is written as a discourse to one who wants to choose his duty and duty, the 14094-sloka Bhagavata is described as a discourse to a ruler who is to die in seven days. Like the Gita, translations of the Bhagavatam are not widely available; Whatever is available, they are like a religious work, not like this book. This book is a collection of easy-to-read stories that does not qualify to be called a literary or religious work. The Bhagavatam, which is believed to have been written before the beginning of the Christian era, contains ancient thoughts on Indian science and post-Vedic Sanskrit texts such as the Mahabharatam and the Ramayanam. In this book, the entire Bhagavatam is condensed into eighty stories divided into two parts along with explanatory notes and a glossary at the end. Every care has been taken to preserve the key message in the Bhagavata - Learning, empathy and dispassion as essentials for a happy life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahabharata, "What is found here, may be found elsewhere. What is not found here, will not be found elsewhere". The ancient story of the Mahabharata casts the readers mind across spiritual and terrestrial vistas and battlefields. Through the experiences of divine incarnations and manifest demons, a great royal dynasty is fractured along fraternal lines, resulting in the greatest war of good and evil ever fought in ancient lands. This most venerable of epics remains profoundly timeless in it teachings of truth, righteousness and liberation. This electronic edition of the Mahabharata is Kisari Mohan Ganguli's 1896 translation and is complete with all 18 parvas in a single ebook. Like other ebook conversions, the text has been sourced but this edition has had additional proofing and a significant number of corrections and rectification of missing or misorded text. The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. It is an epic narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas and the Pandava princes as well as containing philosophical and devotional material, such as a discussion of the four goals of life. Here we have Adi Parva, the first, discusses how the Mahabharata came to be narrated by Sauti to the assembled rishis at Naimisharanya after having been recited at the Sarpasatra of Janamejaya by Vaishampayana at Takṣaśilā. It tells the history of the Bharata race traces history of the Bhrigu race. Vyasa is a revered figure in Hindu traditions. He is a kala-Avatar or part-incarnation of God Vishnu. Vyasa is sometimes conflated by some Vaishnavas with Badarayana, the compiler of the Vedanta Sutras and considered to be one of the seven Chiranjivins. He is also the fourth member of the Rishi Parampara of the Advaita Guru Paramparā of which Adi Shankara is the chief proponent.
