They set themselves the challenge of boiling down what is essential on each subject into sentences of 140 characters, and the results are both entertaining and brilliantly informative. Not a word is wasted. The reader is not patronized and learns something on every page. If only all science writing could be so precise and so economical. Only science writers of a very high calibre could achieve such compression. Marcus Chown - 'the finest cosmology writer of our day' (Matt Ridley) - has known the Dutch writer Govert Schilling for twenty years. Schilling pioneered this very swift form of explanation in a Dutch newspaper, and suggested to Chown that they collaborate on bringing it to a wider audience. Tweeting the Universe is unlike any other science book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Astrological dynamics of the Universe looks at how the astrological cycles of planets in signs have has a major impact on the Western World since the period of 1970 to 2020. Relating how particular planetary cycles in the last forty years have changed our society can give us an indicator of what to expect and how we will respond over the next eight years. The book includes the natal charts of the UK and the USA with an explanation and predictions. There is also a chapter on how each of the twelve zodiac signs can survive and get the best from the next eight years. The book also looks at aspects, houses and historical and cultural reference points from the past to the present. The book is designed for astrologers and anyone who has a little astrological knowledge can pick up this book. The ethos of the book is to show how astrology works as a collective unconsciousness tool that has a direct bearing on humanity as a whole. The idea for the book came from my regular astrology column in the ‘Watkins Review – Mind Body Spirit’ magazine which has developed quite a cult following with positive feedback. ,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the science and creative process behind Poe’s cosmological treatise. In 1848, almost a year and a half before Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of forty, his book Eureka was published. In it, he weaved together his scientific speculations about the universe with his own literary theory, theology, and philosophy of science. Although Poe himself considered it to be his magnum opus, Eureka has mostly been overlooked or underappreciated, sometimes even to the point of being thought an elaborate hoax. Remarkably, however, in Eureka Poe anticipated at least nine major theories and developments in twentieth-century science, including the Big Bang theory, multiverse theory, and the solution to Olbers’ paradox. In this book—the first devoted specifically to Poe’s science side—David N. Stamos, a philosopher of science, combines scientific background with analysis of Poe’s life and work to highlight the creative and scientific achievements of this text. He examines Poe’s literary theory, theology, and intellectual development, and then compares Poe’s understanding of science with that of scientists and philosophers from his own time to the present. Next, Stamos pieces together and clarifies Poe’s theory of scientific imagination, which he then attempts to update and defend by providing numerous case studies of eureka moments in modern science and by seeking insights from comparative biography and psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and evolution. “Edgar Allan Poe, Eureka, and Scientific Imagination is the most comprehensive treatment of Eureka that has yet been published. It is staggeringly thorough in its analysis of Poe’s book, but it also shows how Poe’s theories of cosmogony and cosmology ramify into his fiction and poetry, especially the tales of ratiocination. Stamos takes Eureka seriously, and he does so with the empirical undergirding of vast amounts of scientific scholarship and literary criticism.” — James M. Hutchisson, author of Poe

All we need to understand astrology is to look into the nature of the solar system and sky around us. This book shows that the physical arrangement of the solar system, the orbital positions, the inclinations of orbital planes and things such as the mere size of a planet lead to a natural meaning for each planet. Jeffrey Sayer Close has been an amateur astrologer for 40 years and the Director of the Astrological Bureau of Ideas (www.aboi.com) for the past 12 years. He has a B.A. in physics and a M.A. in telecommunications. He has designed telecommunications network for over 25 corporations and built his own successful telecom software company. He has often been quoted and written about in trade press. He has also made guest appearances on Andrea Klim's "Turn To The Stars" TV show in Manchester, NH. Mr. Close has taken his background in science, his experience in complex networks and long experience in astrology and found new, more basic fundamentals of astrology. These fundamentals have incorporated in his innovative astrological software, INTREPID.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uranus occupies a unique niche in the history of western thought; for while the planets from Mercury to Saturn had been known since pre-antiquity, Uranus was the first to be discovered, in 1781, through scientific investigation. Contemporary investigation of Uranus culminated in the Voyager 2 encounter in 1986. The results of that achievement, as well of concurrent research on the planet, are reviewed by 84 international authorities in this massive volume. Because Uranus' remoteness has prevented its being studied as intensively by earth-based observation as have other members of the solar system, most of what is known about the planet—its magnetic field and magnetosphere and satellites—were learned from the Voyager data, which is viewed here from a variety of perspectives. While the book is intended to serve as a comprehensive review, it also reports a substantial amount of original research results not previously published.

However, before he sets off there is time for some humorous misadventures into foreign climes aboard Earth Station Three. Meet a new addition to the group, the straight talking and foul-mouthed Daz. He was asked to leave the SAS for being too aggressive and then likewise fails as a space pilot. Dr. D’Eath encounters him, when he attacks the station looking to kill Roy. Unfortunately he tries to intimidate Daz, which doesn’t end well for him. Daz in turn, is intimidated by Roy’s mum who packs a mean punch when berating Daz for his fruity language. Soon our unlikely bunch of heroes set off in a new souped-up ship, The Artois, to the brave the unknown perils of the Dead Zone in the search for Roy’s father. Against the odds they find and rescue him, but at an unexpected cost, and then Roy is shocked to discover that he now has a sister. As is his mum. Using 80,000 odd words, most of them in the right order and many of them rude, we elucidate this often funny romp through the galaxy in the quest to find Roy’s father.
