Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life pours into emergency departments with a distinct flavor. The Lady Whose Mouth I Set on Fire . . . and Other True Tales from the ER gives you a big helping of this dish with dozens of stories that are too bizarre, too horrific, or too hilarious to be true--but they are. Every single story is true and can be relied upon for the reader's education and enlightenment in medicine or in life. The author, an emergency physician with three decades worth of tales, is looking hard to find humor anywhere he can. Laughter may not always be the best medicine, but it's sometimes the only one."I would like to go on record as saying this is the best book I have ever read," gushes an anonymous reader.

Book excerpt: "CATCHING COLDS" Mothers frequently wonder where their children get colds. Briefly we will point out some of the sources from which these apparently inexplicable colds may come. A. Sitting on the Floor.—Children should not be allowed to sit or crawl upon the floor at any season of the year, but especially during the winter months. There is always a draught of cold air near the floor. It is a bad habit to begin allowing a child to play with its toys on the floor. Use the bed or a sofa or a platform raised a foot from the floor. B. Kicking the Bed Clothes Off During the Night.—The bed clothes should be securely pinned to the mattress by large safety pins. When it is established as a habit a child who kicks off the bed clothes should wear a combination night suit with "feet," made of flannel during the winter and of cotton during the summer. C. Inadequate Head Covering.—Professor Kerley states that this is one of the "most frequent causes of disease of the respiratory tract in the young." He calls attention to the fact that "mothers carefully clothe the baby with ample coats, blankets, leggings, etc., before they take him out for the daily walk. They dress him in a warm room taking plenty of time to put on the extra clothes, during which time the baby frets and perspires. When all is ready they place upon the hot, almost bald head of the baby a light artistically decorated airy creation which is sold in the shops as children's caps. The child is then taken out of doors and because of the inadequate covering of the hot perspiring head, catches cold and the mother never knows how it came." Every baby and child should wear under such caps a skull cap of thin flannel, especially in cold weather. In summer or windy day a light silk handkerchief folded under the cap is a very excellent protection.

Book Synopsis The Implied Spider by : Wendy Doniger
Download or read book The Implied Spider written by Wendy Doniger and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wendy Doniger's foundational study is both modern in its engagement with a diverse range of religions and refreshingly classic in its transhistorical, cross-cultural approach. By responsibly analyzing patterns and themes across context, Doniger reinvigorates the comparative reading of religion, tapping into a wealth of narrative traditions, from the instructive tales of Judaism and Christianity to the moral lessons of the Bhagavad Gita. She extracts political meaning from a variety of texts while respecting the original ideas of each. A new preface confronts the difficulty of contextualizing the comparison of religions as well as controversies over choosing subjects and positioning arguments, and the text itself is expanded and updated throughout.

Download or read book Sekenre written by Darrell Schweitzer and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sekenre: The Book of the Sorcerer is a collection of linked fantasy short stories by American writer Darrell Schweitzer featuring his dark fantasy protagonist, the child-sorcerer Sekenre. The twelve stories, originally published from 1994-2004 in a number of fantasy fiction magazines, relate various episodes in the life of the immortal sorcerer, who stopped aging physically when he first became a sorcerer while still a child. He confronts various threats and challenges while attempting to maintain some semblance of humanity through the aeons. Critic Don D'Ammassa called Schweitzer's book "some of the more interesting sword and sorcery style fantasy fiction being published these past few years," and Sekenre "probably Schweitzer's most interesting character, a combination of a child and a powerful sorcerer who has almost ceased to be a human being."
