Each has had a loved one ravaged by Alzheimer's Disease. We watched them morph into complete strangers who continue to look the same. Famous or not, the five million Alzheimer's victims in this country and their families are people trying to get through this tragedy. Whether beginning the search for diagnosis, adjusting to its reality, or wondering if you are doing the right thing, you are eager for answers. Whether the victim is in the early, moderate or severe stage you have doubts. Been there and done that. To the astonishment of doctors, we kept my wife at home and thriving for thirteen years with moderate to severe Alzheimer's Disease. To do that takes dedication, planning and faith. However, we are ordinary people and we did it. Many of you can too. I wrote this book because this disease has touched nearly a hundred friends either as victims, relatives or caregivers. During one half hour at my fifty-fifth college reunion, I learned of three more stricken classmates. This book is for them, their friends, families, and you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Who Should Rule at Home? Joyce D. Goodfriend argues that the high-ranking gentlemen who figure so prominently in most accounts of New York City's evolution from 1664, when the English captured the small Dutch outpost of New Amsterdam, to the eve of American independence in 1776 were far from invincible and that the degree of cultural power they held has been exaggerated. The urban elite experienced challenges to its cultural authority at different times, from different groups, and in a variety of settings. Goodfriend illuminates the conflicts that pitted the privileged few against the socially anonymous many who mobilized their modest resources to creatively resist domination. Critics of orthodox religious practice took to heart the message of spiritual rebirth brought to New York City by the famed evangelist George Whitefield and were empowered to make independent religious choices. Wives deserted husbands and took charge of their own futures. Indentured servants complained or simply ran away. Enslaved women and men carved out spaces where they could control their own lives and salvage their dignity. Impoverished individuals, including prostitutes, chose not to bow to the dictates of the elite, even though it meant being cut off from the sources of charity. Among those who confronted the elite were descendants of the early Dutch settlers; by clinging to their native language and traditional faith they preserved a crucial sense of autonomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're tired of staring at the same mess every day, but struggling to find the time and willpower to clean it, you probably have a very good reason: anxiety, fatigue, depression, ADHD, or lack of support. Designed by therapist KC Davis, this revolutionary method of cleaning and organizing helps end the stress-mess cycle. After KC Davis gave birth to her second child, she didn't fold a single piece of laundry for seven months. Between postpartum depression and ADHD, she felt numb and overwhelmed. She regained her sanity--and the functionality of her home--after one life-changing realization: You don't work for your home; your home works for you. In other words, messiness is not a moral failing. A new sense of calm washed over her as she let go of the shame-based messaging that interpreted a pile of dirty laundry as "I can never keep up" and a chaotic kitchen as "I'm a bad mother." Instead, she looked at unwashed clothes and thought, "I am alive," and at stacks of dishes and thought, "I cooked my family dinner three nights in a row." Building on this foundation of self-compassion, KC devised the powerful practical approach that has exploded in popularity through her TikTok account, @domesticblisters. The secret is to stop following perfectionist rules that don't make sense for you--like folding clothes that don't wrinkle anyway, or thinking that every room has to be clean at the same time--and to find creative solutions that accommodate your needs, pet peeves, daily rhythms, and attention span. Inside, you'll learn exactly how to customize your approach and rebuild your relationship with your home, including: -How to stop seeing care tasks as a reflection of your worth, but rather as kindnesses to your future self -How to use calming rituals to keep you from feeling overwhelmed when you look at a big mess -How to stagger tasks that are easy to procrastinate throughout the week and month -How to quickly transform a room from messy to fully functional through the "5 Things" tidying method, and other shortcuts requiring minimal energy Read this book to make home feel like a sanctuary again: where you can move with ease, where guilt, self-criticism, and endless checklists have no place, and where you always have permission to rest, even when things aren't finished.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *The basis for the wonderfully funny and moving TV series developed by Amy Poehler and Scout Productions* A charming, practical, and unsentimental approach to putting a home in order while reflecting on the tiny joys that make up a long life. In Sweden there is a kind of decluttering called döstädning, dö meaning “death” and städning meaning “cleaning.” This surprising and invigorating process of clearing out unnecessary belongings can be undertaken at any age or life stage but should be done sooner than later, before others have to do it for you. In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, artist Margareta Magnusson, with Scandinavian humor and wisdom, instructs readers to embrace minimalism. Her radical and joyous method for putting things in order helps families broach sensitive conversations, and makes the process uplifting rather than overwhelming. Margareta suggests which possessions you can easily get rid of (unworn clothes, unwanted presents, more plates than you’d ever use) and which you might want to keep (photographs, love letters, a few of your children’s art projects). Digging into her late husband’s tool shed, and her own secret drawer of vices, Margareta introduces an element of fun to a potentially daunting task. Along the way readers get a glimpse into her life in Sweden, and also become more comfortable with the idea of letting go.

Book excerpt: Bankim Chatterji was perhaps the foremost novelist and intellectual mediating western ideas to India in the latter half of the 19th century. Debi Chaudhurani is a didactic work that champions a particular interpretation of Hindu dharma and wifely duties reflective of the late 19th-century Calcutta context in which it was written. Lipner's idiomatic translation is enhanced by his detailed commentary on the original Bengali text and by a readable introduction that sets the novel and its ideas in context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warren Hahn inherited his family's German work ethic. He knows the meaning of grueling farm labor, the sweat and toil that come from tilling the land, and the endless hours of work that life on an old homestead demands. He's seen many changes in his life, but at the root of everything are the precious seeds of family and history. In this autobiographical work, Warren honors his family and the many hardships they endured to start a new life in America in the mid-1800s. His family grew from hardy and hardworking German people who risked everything to create a better future for their children. Warren grew up on tales of the difficult and dangerous ocean crossings, love, adventure, ambition, death, disaster, hardship, and hope; he knew that these stories needed to be preserved and celebrated. His ancestors settled in the harsh frontier lands of Texas and scrambled to create a future in a hostile, unforgiving environment and time. Now younger generations can come to know the price these strong-willed settlers paid for their family. Offering more than just a family history, he shares the story of his own life in modern-day Gillespie County, Texas. Every person has a story worth telling. In honor of his family's rich history, Warren has gathered many lifetimes of those stories to inspire future generations.
