Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller that gives readers a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Book excerpt: From the first page on, readers learn that they do not have to struggle with emotional and addictive problems alone- whether the problems are related to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety/panic problems, relationship difficulties, or the gamut of addictive problems. You can learn to recognize who is really driving your emotional bus in the most difficult "traffic" areas of your life. Dr. Henman invites you to sit across from him as if you were actually in a Therapeutic Coaching session. It is an intimate experience rather than an intellectual exercise, as you are encouraged to reflect deeply on Nuggets of Wisdom about the process of change. He has spent the past 30 years in his psychology practice successfully coaching thousands of clients to make desired changes, while helping them build healthy self-esteem and connect with their core spirituality. You can walk with him through key roadblocks that commonly prevent growth, and learn how to relax into making healthy changes in the present, by approaching life with "No-Fault Learning". You can learn how to recognize and change faulty Perceptual Filters that rob you of healthy power and awareness. You can gain the tools and skills necessary to empower your own Inner Coach, as you shift from survival mode into living consciously. With the help of a steering committee of recovering individuals, Dr. Henamn wrote Changing Attitudes in Recovery- A Handbook On Esteem (CAIR) and founded free CAIR Support Groups in 1990. The CAIR Handbook provided the format and structure, which allowed people from a variety of different problem backgrounds to come together and develop healthy self-esteem. The CAIR Handbook supplied the tools and resources for the free support groups. Who's Really Driving Your Bus? shares this material in the format of a Therapeutic Coaching session. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A much needed, sobering look at the seductive promises of new technologies. You couldn’t ask for a better guide than Jack Stilgoe. His book is measured, fair and incisive.”Hannah Fry, University College London, UK, and author of Hello World: How to be Human in the Age of the Machine “A cracking and insightful little book that thoughtfully examines the most important political and social question we face: how to define and meaningfully control the technologies that are starting to run our lives.”Jamie Bartlett, author of The People vs Tech: How the Internet is Killing Democracy (and How We Save It) "Innovation has not only a rate but also a direction. Stilgoe’s excellent new book tackles the directionality of AI with a strong call to action. The book critiques the idea that technology is a pre-determined force, and puts forward a concrete proposal on how to make sure we are making decisions along the way that ask who is benefitting and how can we open the possibilities of innovation while steering them to deliver social benefit."Mariana Mazzucato, University College London, UK, and author of The Value of Everything: Making and Taking in the Global Economy “Looking closely at the prospects and problems for ‘autonomous vehicles,’ Jack Stilgoe uncovers layer after layer of an even more fascinating story - the bizarre disconnect between technological means and basic human ends in our time. A tour de force of history and theory, the book is rich in substance, unsettling in its questions and great fun to read.”Langdon Winner, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA Too often, we understand the effects of technological change only in hindsight. When technologies are new, it is not clear where they are taking us or who's driving. Innovators tend to accentuate the benefits rather than risks or other injustices. Technologies like self-driving cars are not as inevitable as the hype would suggest. If we want to realise the opportunities, spread the benefits to people who normally lose out and manage the risks, Silicon Valley’s disruptive innovation is a bad model. Steering innovation in the public interest means finding new ways for public and private sector organisations to collaborate.

Book excerpt: An Instant New York Times Bestseller A New York Times Notable Book One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of 2020 Named One of the Best Books of the Year by: The Washington Post, NPR, Shelf Awareness, Esquire, Electric Literature, Slate, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and InStyle A chillingly personal and exquisitely wrought memoir of a daughter reckoning with the brutal murder of her mother at the hands of her former stepfather, and the moving, intimate story of a poet coming into her own in the wake of a tragedy At age nineteen, Natasha Trethewey had her world turned upside down when her former stepfather shot and killed her mother. Grieving and still new to adulthood, she confronted the twin pulls of life and death in the aftermath of unimaginable trauma and now explores the way this experience lastingly shaped the artist she became. With penetrating insight and a searing voice that moves from the wrenching to the elegiac, Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Natasha Trethewey explores this profound experience of pain, loss, and grief as an entry point into understanding the tragic course of her mother’s life and the way her own life has been shaped by a legacy of fierce love and resilience. Moving through her mother’s history in the deeply segregated South and through her own girlhood as a “child of miscegenation” in Mississippi, Trethewey plumbs her sense of dislocation and displacement in the lead-up to the harrowing crime that took place on Memorial Drive in Atlanta in 1985. Memorial Drive is a compelling and searching look at a shared human experience of sudden loss and absence but also a piercing glimpse at the enduring ripple effects of white racism and domestic abuse. Animated by unforgettable prose and inflected by a poet’s attention to language, this is a luminous, urgent, and visceral memoir from one of our most important contemporary writers and thinkers.

This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the drivers of cross-border bank lending to 49 Emerging Markets (EMs) during the period 1990Q1-2014Q4, by assessing the impact of monetary, financial and real sector shocks in both the US and the euro area. The literature has traditionally highlighted the influence of US monetary policy on driving cross-border bank flows, and more recently the importance of both US and Euro Area (EA) financial/banking sectors’ related variables. Our contribution is the simultaneous analysis of the role of these US and EA drivers, as well as their interactions with real sector shocks. We corroborate the negative impact of US monetary policy tightening on cross-border lending to EMs, but we find that EA monetary policy seems to have an impact mostly on Emerging Europe, reflecting the fact that cross-border lending to most other EM regions is dollar denominated. We also find that real sector shocks in both the US and EA trigger an increase in cross-border lending, but less in EA when modeling the financial sector. Finally, for financial sector shocks, such as those associated with a decrease in bank leverage, our results indicate a broad-based overall contraction of cross-border lending if the shock originates in the US, and heterogenous effects across borrowing regions if the shock originates in the EA.
