Book Synopsis The Cutting Edge by : Mark A. Lorell
Download or read book The Cutting Edge written by Mark A. Lorell and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 1998 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposition that innovation is critical in the cost-effective design and development of successful military aircraft is still subject to some debate. RAND research indicates that innovation is promoted by intense competition among three or more industry competitors. Given the critical policy importance of this issue in the current environment of drastic consolidation of the aerospace defense industry, the authors here examine the history of the major prime contractors in developing jet fighters since World War II. They make use of an extensive RAND database that includes nearly all jet fighters, fighter-attack aircraft, and bombers developed and flown by U.S. industry since 1945, as well as all related prototypes, modifications, upgrades, etc. The report concludes that (1) experience matters, because of the tendency to specialize and thus to develop system-specific expertise; (2) yet the most dramatic innovations and breakthroughs came from secondary or marginal players trying to compete with the industry leaders; and (3) dedicated military R&D conducted or directly funded by the U.S. government has been critical in the development of new higher-performance fighters and bombers.

Book Synopsis Arms and Innovation by : James Hasik
Download or read book Arms and Innovation written by James Hasik and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With many of the most important new military systems of the past decade produced by small firms that won competitive government contracts, defense-industry consultant James Hasik argues in Arms and Innovation that small firms have a number of advantages relative to their bigger competitors. Such firms are marked by an entrepreneurial spirit and fewer bureaucratic obstacles, and thus can both be more responsive to changes in the environment and more strategic in their planning. This is demonstrated, Hasik shows, by such innovation in military technologies as those that protect troops from roadside bombs in Iraq and the Predator drones that fly over active war zones and that are crucial to our new war on terror. For all their advantages, small firms also face significant challenges in access to capital and customers. To overcome such problems, they can form alliances either with each other or with larger companies. Hasik traces the trade-offs of such alliances and provides crucial insight into their promises and pitfalls. This ground-breaking study is a significant contribution to understanding both entrepreneurship and alliances, two crucial factors in business generally. It will be of interest to readers in the defense sector as well as the wider business community.

Book Synopsis Mel Bay's Complete Modern Drum Set by : Frank Briggs
Download or read book Mel Bay's Complete Modern Drum Set written by Frank Briggs and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2002-07-24 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers challenging material for the intermediate to advanced drummer. Addressing a multitude of styles, author Frank Briggs helps guide your playing to a higher plane while improving your technique and raising your awareness of cutting edge concepts such as metric modulation, displaced beats, polyrhythms, and more. Briggs states, He believes the more you know about different styles and the inner workings of time and phrasing, the better your ability to contribute to the music at hand. The clearer you see the parallels or the common threads that tie these concepts together, the more freedom you will have to express yourself. The music is challenging and suitable for the advanced drummer. Styles include odd meters, metric modulation, tuplets, funk, Latin, mid and up-tempo swing, and fusion. This set includes the Complete Modern Drumset CD, which is a play-along for drums with full stereo versions of the music charts included in the book. Sketch, Electric, Red Moon, Home, Funky Track, Jazz Swing, and 32 Bar are recorded with drums and without drums (the tracks without drums include a click track) so that the student can listen and play-along. Solo sections are included on most of the tracks. Instrumentation is drums, bass, keyboards and sax.
