Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes recent advances in carnation genome research for large-scale transcriptome analysis, the draft genome sequence, DNA markers and genome mapping, flower color, mutations, flower opening, vase life, interspecific hybridization, fragrance. The carnation is one of the most important ornamental flowers in the world, along with the chrysanthemum and the rose. The genus Dianthus is a member of the Caryophyllaceae and includes more than 300 species of annuals and evergreen perennials. Modern carnation cultivars are the product of highly complex hybridization, owing to their long history of breeding. The carnation genome was first sequenced in ornamentals by a Japanese research team in 2013. The carnation has been genetically improved over the years, and there are various types of flower colors, shapes, patterns, and sizes. In this book, the molecular mechanism of flower color development and the transposable elements responsible for this diversity are studied in detail. In addition, it presents breeding and physiological research for improving flower vase life, one of the most important traits in ornamentals, based on a model of ethylene susceptible flowers. To improve selection efficiency, genomic analysis tools including DNA markers and genetic linkage maps are also highlighted. In closing, the book discusses mutation breeding technologies such as ion-beam irradiation and genetically modified carnations.

Book excerpt: The exquisite symmetry of the star-shaped blooms of saxifrages has captivated gardeners for centuries. Close observation of their fine markings, artful color combinations, and graceful presence makes it eminently clear why they attract such an enthusiastic following. Many saxifrages come from mountain habitats that make them well-suited to rock gardens, troughs, and containers, but the diverse genus includes a huge range of garden worthy plants that deserve to be better known and more widely grown. This book brings together accounts of garden and wild saxifrages, their botany, history, cultivation and propagation. All sections of genus Saxifraga are described, first discursively for the general gardener and then from a botanical viewpoint. There are the dwarf cushion saxifrages whose perfect domes of foliage are studded with jewel-like flowers, the silver saxifrages whose distinctive rosettes and fountain sprays of white flowers associate well with ordinary garden plants, and the mossy saxifrages whose highly prized cultivars have enhanced gardens since the end of the nineteenth century. Malcolm McGregor's advice on using saxifrages in different parts of the garden and his list of the top 100 saxifrages will be invaluable to gardeners new to the genus and to experts who wish to diversify. This is the fascinating story of a true enthusiast's search for saxifrages in the wild, his techniques for successful cultivation, and his continuing quest for information. It will increase understanding of this plant, inspire everyone to grow more saxifrages in their gardens, and satisfy specialists and enthusiasts for decades to come.

Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1987, the AHS Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers has sold nearly 3 million copies and become the must-have reference for all gardeners around the world. This is the ideal book for selecting plants, planning a border, a greenhouse, or a whole garden, and for identifying plants, and it contains a wealth of information on their appearance and cultivation. The 8,000 plants described cover suitability for every climate, including house and conservatory plants. The book begins with a general introduction and explanation of plant names, followed by a revised and enlarged plant selector, highlighting plants suitable for particular sites, soils, conditions, and purposes. The 5,000-entry illustrated plant catalog follows, divided into eight main sections: trees, shrubs, roses, climbers, perennials, annuals and biennials, rock plants, bulbs, water plants, and cacti and other succulents. In this new edition, the sections have been re-ordered to help plants be chosen more intuitively: by color, then season, then size. Feature spreads throughout the color section illustrate a range of cultivars within the most popular genera, such as pelargoniums and clematis. Each plant variety is illustrated by a colorful photograph, and accompanied by a detailed description with cultivation requirements. The single-color, text-only plant dictionary at the back contains entries for every genus in the book, plus more than 3,000 plants in addition to those in the illustrated catalog. It also functions as an index to the plant catalog, with extensive cross-referencing. All the information needed to grow each plant is included here. Following the introduction and plant selector, the book is divided into two main sections: a 440-page, full-colour illustrated plant catalogue, and a plant dictionary featuring 8,000 plants listed alphabetically by botanical name. There is also an index of common names and glossary of terms. Contents PRELIMS PLANT NAMES AND ORIGINS PLANT SELECTOR Lists useful plants for common situations, such as sunless walls, windbreaks, drought, sandy soil, and moist shade.
