Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over half a million fall Chinook once spawned in the middle and upper Snake River. Today, 100 percent of that prime spawning area is behind dams that do not have fish ladders. Hells Canyon Dam, the third dam of the Hells Canyon Complex was completed in 1961. Fall Chinook numbers were estimated at 15,000 in 1957 and dwindled to less than 10 fish by 1971. On the North Fork Clearwater River in Idaho, steelhead returning from the ocean once produced 1,000 redds (nests) per mile. The North Fork is approximately 28 percent of the Clearwater basin, but produced 50 to 60 percent of the entire Clearwater basin's steelhead production. The North Fork of the Clearwater River was also suitable spawning habitat to accommodate 74,000 Chinook salmon redds. Today, the North Fork of the Clearwater River is unavailable to steelhead and Chinook. Dworshak Dam, built without a fish passage system was completed in 1968. In order to have healthy, harvestable, self-sustaining salmon populations, there must be an adequate number of returning adults reaching an adequate volume of spawning habitat. If the number of returning adults is diminished, or the volume of adequate habitat is diminished, healthy, harvestable, self-sustaining salmon populations cannot be maintained. Recent studies and research have been limited in the scope of their efforts, limiting possible outcomes. Some are agenda driven while others ignore basic salmon biology. It is the purpose of this effort to present timeline "cause and effect," to help develop the needed focus to save Snake River Salmon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two men swung their horses through the tumble-down gateway of the Half-Moon Ranch and rode slowly toward the old, rambling ranch-house. The man in the lead was a tall, thin, unshaven cowboy, with a long, sad countenance and a pair of bright, grin-wrinkled eyes. He rode standing straight in his saddle, with the brim of his sombrero pulled down over his eyes. The other man was shorter, heavier, with a heavy-lined face and half-shut eyes. A few strands of roan-colored hair straggled from under the brim of his hat, which rested on the back of his head. They drew rein and looked the place over. The tall one nodded toward the side of the house, and they both rode around to the rear, from whence came the sound of a voice raised in anger. “Cook!” exclaimed the voice scornfully. “You? Huh! Do yuh think the Half-Moon outfit wear steel bills and digests their food through a gizzard? Why, dang yore hide, yuh can’t even burn stuff decently. Set yoreself up to cook fer an outfit, do yuh? Where’d you learn to cook? Cook, ——! Yo’re fired! No, I don’t want to hear yuh explain how yuh got drunk on one li’l drink and forgot which way home was. No sir! Pack yore war-bag and drift. I’ve got enough troubles without annexin’ a lot of bad stummicks around here. Yo’re fired; sabe? If you can’t understand English, I’ll write it out in Swedish and mail it to yuh.” The tall cowboy’s face wrinkled into a grin, and he started to say something to his companion, but just at that moment a woman opened the kitchen-door and looked out at them. She was a tiny wisp of a woman, dressed in faded calico. About fifty years of age, with a mild, sweet face and soft, blue eyes. She stared at the two cowboys for a moment, and a flush crept into her tanned face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-class armchair travel at its very best! Mona Lisa’s Pajamas gives readers a round-trip ticket for a journey around the world, carrying them to distant destinations most of us will never visit. Originally written for The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News, A. Craig Copetas’s delightfully surprising columns are now collected in book form for the first time. Covering exotic locales, improbable business ventures, artisan winemakers, and memorably oddball characters, Copetas’s vivid writing brings his subjects alive with richly-textured descriptions only a truly gifted observer can capture. From Sparta’s souvenir sword-makers swamped with demand thanks to the hit movie 300, to a Russian golf pro whose favorite clubs were built from the scrapped metal of a Soviet nuclear missile, Copetas writes of unorthodox business pursuits and faraway locations with an infectious joie de vivre and an unerring eye for what makes enjoyable reading. Unforgettable visits for the armchair traveler: -Israel's Sacred Golf Course: where bomb craters have become bunkers -How to Succeed in Business and Avoid Serious Head Trauma: near Stockholm, a former British Special Air Services commando teaches executives how to survive a kidnapping -An Honorable and Ancient Solution to Boardroom Disputes: the 21st-century duel -Propulsion Is a Real Plus with Clubs Made in a Missile Factory: A Russian treasures his set of golf clubs--made from an old Soviet missile once aimed at the US -Da Vinci Code Fans Dig Up the Dead: Dan Brown’s devotees swarm a town central to the blockbuster’s story

Book excerpt: Maidy Houghton entered the world in the city of Plymouth, Devon. German airplanes dropped building-shattering bombs over the southern part o England. Her first cries echoed the blare of the warning sirens. Born to a British nurse and Mexican father, who was serving in the Royal Air Force, Black Swan, Squadron 103. Maidy’s journey began in hope, but led through pain, reconciliation, and redemption. War had badly affected her family. They had a strong sense of Independence through fear, with empty hearts. It suffocated their inner needs, and left them expressing no love or emotion. June Maidy Houghton, remembers the blinding hate that captures the miseries of her childhood: a mother bestowing mental and physical abuse, forcing her to spend eleven years in an orphanage. When she finally came home, the sexual abuse from her stepfather, and finally, her decadelong hatred of Germany and the Nazi who killed her father. Where there is war, there is no peace. This is her story
