Book excerpt: A Goldsboro Crown Historical Fiction Award Nominee The bestselling author of The Bolter returns with a delicious novel about two determined women whose lives collide in the halls of a pedigreed London town home. When eighteen-year-old Grace Campbell arrives in London in 1914, she’s unable to fulfill her family’s ambitions and find a position as an office secretary. Lying to her parents and her brother, Michael, she takes a job as a housemaid at Number 35, Park Lane, where she is quickly caught up in lives of its inhabitants—in particular, those of its privileged son, Edward, and daughter, Beatrice, who is recovering from a failed relationship that would have taken her away from an increasingly stifling life. Desperate to find a new purpose, Bea joins a group of radical suffragettes and strikes up an intriguing romance with an impassioned young lawyer. Unbeknownst to each of the young women, the choices they make amid the rapidly changing world of WWI will connect their chances at future happiness in dramatic and inevitable ways.

Her elderly neighbors, the spunky Fog Ladies, have nothing but time. When, one by one, old ladies die in their elegant apartment building in San Francisco, Sarah assumes it is the natural consequence of growing old. The Fog Ladies assume murder. Mrs. Bridge falls off a stool cleaning bugs out of her kitchen light. Mrs. Talwin hits her head in the bathtub and drowns. Suddenly, the Pacific Heights building is turning over tenants faster than the fog rolls in on a cool San Francisco evening. Sarah resists the Fog Ladies' perseverations. But when one of them falls down the stairs and tells Sarah she was pushed, even Sarah believes evil lurks in their building. Can they find the killer before they fall victim themselves?

Book excerpt: Tony Kelly was football crazy from the age of seven. At sixteen he was the youngest ever player in the first team at Bristol City and in his twenties he became a pro, playing for clubs such Stoke City and Cardiff City in the Football League, second and third divisions. But his blossoming soccer career was marred by a series of mishaps and misdeeds which drove him to disaster. Ruined by an addiction to gambling, he lost his job, his career, his partner and all his money. Now he has written his story – as Kelly puts it, to “invite the public, my family and my friends into my secret hell of racism, despair, depression, stardom, gambling addiction and ultimately self-destruction”. Red Card is a tragic yet uplifting story of a sportsman’s battle with his demons, on and off the pitch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a series on historical female figures. It features Lola Montez, a dancer and actress born Eliza Gilbert in Ireland who made a career as a Spanish dancer and courtesan. Her elopement and subsequent marriage to a Lieutenant at the tender age of 16 ended five years later in Calcutta, where she began her career as a dancer. Upon return to London, she adopted the stage name Lola, and caught the attention of Franz Liszt and Alexandre Dumas, both rumoured to be lovers of Lola Montez. In 1846 she moved to Munich and became mistress to Ludwig I of Bavaria who made her Countess of Landsfeld, but she was forced to leave when Ludwig abdicated. She met her second husband in Switzerland, but a bigamy case meant Lola and her husband were obliged to relocate to France and Spain. Shortly after, the marriage ended, and Montez crossed the atlantic to reestablish her reputation in the States. Lola went on tour to Australia in 1885, but it was in America that she died, aged 42, of pneumonia. An extraordinary tale of a most extraordinary character.
