Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive and controversial debut novel by a major new voice in fiction Meet Tristan Hart, a brilliant young man of means. The year is 1751, and at the age of twenty he leaves home to study medicine at the great hospital of St. Thomas in London. It will be a momentous year for the intellectually ambitious Mr. Hart, who, in addition to being a student of Locke and Descartes and a promising young physician, is also, alas, psychotic. He is obsessed with the nature of pain and medically preventing it, but—equally strong and much harder to control—is his obsession with causing it. Desperate to understand his deviant desires before they are his undoing, he uses the new tools of the age—reason and science and skepticism—to plumb the depths of his own dark mind. Profoundly imaginative, unexpectedly funny, and with a strange but moving love story at its heart, The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones is an oddly beautiful and daring novel about the relationship between the mind and body, sex, madness, pain, and the existence of God.

Blinking hard she was instantly sitting back in the anthropology lab questioning her own sanity. Was that a vision? An hallucination? Could she really just have witnessed, or rather, felt the brutal beating of a woman who lived over 170 years ago, and if so, why? What was this woman trying to tell her? Compelled to understand this message, Maude juggles the running of her own business and her work in the lab. Her attempt to decipher the tale of an excavated skeleton from the former grounds of the Erie County Poorhouse consumes her. This quest is aided by the diary of the Keeper of the Buffalo Orphan Asylum, Ciara Sloane Nolan. A former poorhouse inmate herself, Ciara's duty is to defend and protect the homeless children of the city. Between the journal and the whispering of bones, the past and the present intertwine. Maude learns of widespread corruption at the almshouse, and a most horrifying secret is revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the small town of Millersville, nestled between the rolling hills of the Appalachian Mountains, an air of unease hung heavy over the inhabitants. Whispers of strange occurrences and mysterious disappearances circled through the town like a dark omen. In the heart of this enigmatic town stood the dilapidated Holloway Manor, a derelict mansion long abandoned and shrouded in tales of tragedy and haunting. The Holloway Manor had stood for generations, its crumbling walls and creaking floors bearing witness to the secrets it held within. Tara Johnson, a young journalist with a penchant for the macabre, had set her sights on unraveling the mysteries of the manor. Drawn by an unexplainable longing, she set foot inside the decaying walls, her footsteps echoing through the vast, empty chambers. Tara's footsteps faltered as she heard a faint whisper, like the soft rustle of leaves in the wind. Her breath caught in her throat as she glanced around, but the empty halls offered no solace. "Hello?" she called out, her voice carrying through the silent corridors. There was no response, only the lingering sound of her own pulse. As she explored further, the whispers grew louder, resonating through the decaying halls like a haunting melody. Tara's heart quickened as a chill swept over her, sending shivers down her spine. She pressed on, her curiosity outweighing her growing apprehension.

Book excerpt: In Aboriginal and Māori literature, the circle and the spiral are the symbolic metaphors for a never-ending journey of discovery and rediscovery. The journey itself, with its indigenous perspectives and sense of orientation, is the most significant act of cultural recuperation. The present study outlines the fields of indigenous writing in Australia and New Zealand in the crucial period between the mid-1980s and the early 1990s - particularly eventful years in which postcolonial theory attempted to 'centre the margins' and indigenous writers were keen to escape the particular centering offered in search of other positions more in tune with their creative sensibilities. Indigenous writing relinquished its narrative preference for social realism in favour of traversing old territory in new spiritual ways; roots converted into routes. Standard postcolonial readings of indigenous texts often overwrite the 'difference' they seek to locate because critical orthodoxy predetermines what 'difference' can be. Critical evaluations still tend to eclipse the ontological grounds of Aboriginal and Māori traditions and specific ways of moving through and behaving in cultural landscapes and social contexts. Hence the corrective applied in Circles and Spirals - to look for locally and culturally specific tracks and traces that lead in other directions than those catalogued by postcolonial convention. This agenda is pursued by means of searching enquiries into the historical, anthropological, political and cultural determinants of the present state of Aboriginal and Māori writing (principally fiction). Independent yet interrelated exemplary analyses of works by Keri Hulme and Patricia Grace and Mudrooroo and Sam Watson (Australia) provided the 'thick description' that illuminates the author's central theses, with comparative side-glances at Witi Ihimaera, Heretaunga Pat Baker and Alan Duff (New Zealand) and Archie Weller and Sally Morgan (Australia).

Book excerpt: "Again Sanders" is a collection of twelve short stories written by Edgar Wallace. The tales are all loosely connected and centre on Lt. Augustus "Bones" Tibbetts. Part of his famous "African novels" ("Sanders of the River" series), this volume is highly recommended for those who have read and enjoyed others in the series, and it would make for a worthy addition to any collection. Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1 April 1875 - 10 February 1932) was an English writer and journalist. He was a prolific writer, producing in his lifetime screen plays, historical non-fiction, poetry, 18 stage plays, over 170 novels, and 957 short stories. He is most famous for being the creator of King Kong, and for his "The Green Archer" serial. Other notable works by this author include: "Kate Plus Ten" (1919), "The Crimson Circle" (1922) and "The Valley of Ghosts" (1922). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
