Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume arose originally from the complaints of the editor's students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, that there was no modern book on protein fibers which told enough about protein science and chemical tech nologies related to fibers. By and large this is probably a reasonable cri de coeur. The undergraduate on a technological course, lacking information on the basic scientific techniques used to carry out the research on which his fiber technology is based, can find it difficult to obtain this information. The pure science undergraduate often lacks knowledge of the application of these techniques in protein fiber technology. The young graduates, com mencing research related to some aspect of protein fibers, are drawn from a wide range of scientific disciplines, having been trained as biochemists, chemists, physicists, technologists, and histologists, to name but a few. Generally these new research workers pass through a preliminary "lost" period in which they have to evaluate their background in relation to the wide and differing fields of research in protein fiber science to which they are now exposed. As time goes on they then either develop a wide knowledge covering science and technology or remain in a specific part of their original discipline, with a narrow knowledge of its application in the field of the research degree they are taking.

Book excerpt: The cheetah may be the fastest land mammal, but is it the fastest animal of all? Or does the award go to a soaring bird, slithering snake, or sailing fish? The fourteen animals presented in Whos Faster? span a range of speeds, from the slow crawl of a sloth to the breakneck blur of the fastest animal in the world. With lyrical text, author Eileen Meyer describes each animals unique movement and then asks readers, Whos faster? Kids wont be able to stop turning the pages until they find out whos fastest. Beautiful watercolors by award-winning illustrator Constance Bergum capture each animals graceful movement and include intricate details of hooves, whiskers, fins, and feathers. An appendix provides more information about each animal.

Book excerpt: The author of five superbly entertaining Regency novels, Patricia Veryan has been proclaimed "a worthy successor to Georgette Heyer at her very best" (The Chattanooga Times). Now, in her sixth novel, Feather Castles, Patricia Veryan gives us another sparkling Regency full of drama and romance as she unfolds the spellbinding adventures and apparently star-crossed love of the soon-to-be-married Miss Rachel Strand and a man whose name she does not even know. It is dusk on the ruined battlefields of Waterloo. In a carriage slowly making its way across the desolation is Rachel Strand, fiancée to the rich and powerful Claude Sanguinet, who is accompanying her friend and teacher Sister Maria Evangeline in a desperate search for one man among the thousands who lie wounded. Before they can find that man, they come across a valiant young solider who, though badly wounded, saves them from plunderers–a man who cannot remember his name, or even his nationality. So begins a riveting tale that takes us to both sides of the English Channel, from elegant drawing rooms and a magnificent sinister country estate to riotous taverns and hostelries...

Yet, despite its fundamental importance, the full breadth ofbiology has been given short shrift in most environmentalengineering and science courses. Filling this gap in the professional literature, EnvironmentalBiology for Engineers and Scientists introduces students ofchemistry, physics, geology, and environmental engineering to abroad range of biological concepts they may not otherwise beexposed to in their training. Based on a graduate-level coursedesigned to teach engineers to be literate in biological conceptsand terminology, the text covers a wide range of biology withoutmaking it tedious for non-biology majors. Teaching aids include: * Notes, problems, and solutions * Problem sets at the end of each chapter * PowerPoints(r) of many figures A valuable addition to any civil engineering and environmentalstudies curriculum, this book also serves as an importantprofessional reference for practicing environmental professionalswho need to understand the biological impacts of pollution.

Book excerpt: All-new edition of the world’s leading vertebrate palaeontology textbook, now addressing key evolutionary transitions and ecological drivers for vertebrate evolution Richly illustrated with colour illustrations of the key species and cladograms of all major vertebrate taxa, Vertebrate Palaeontology provides a complete account of the evolution of vertebrates, including macroevolutionary trends and drivers that have shaped their organs and body plans, key transitions such as terrestrialization, endothermy, flight and impacts of mass extinctions on biodiversity and ecological drivers behind the origin of chordates and vertebrates, their limbs, jaws, feathers, and hairs. This revised and updated fifth edition features numerous recent examples of breakthrough discoveries in line with the current macroevolutionary approach in palaeontology research, such as the evolutionary drivers that have shaped vertebrate development. Didactical features have been enhanced and include new functional and developmental feature spreads, key questions, and extensive references to useful websites. Written by a leading academic in the field, Vertebrate Palaeontology discusses topics such as: Palaeozoic fishes, including Cambrian vertebrates, placoderms (‘armour-plated monsters’), Pan-Chondrichthyes such as sharks and rays, and Osteichthyes (‘bony fishes’) The first tetrapods, covering problems of life on land, diversity of Carboniferous tetrapods and temnospondyls and reptiliomorphs following the Carboniferous Mesozoic reptiles, such as Testudinata (turtles), Crocodylomorpha, Pterosauria, Dinosauria, great sea dragons and Lepidosauria (lizards and snakes) Mammals of the southern and northern hemispheres, covering Xenarthra (sloths, anteaters), Afrotheria (African mammals), Laurasiatheria (bats, ungulates, carnivores), and Euarchontoglires (rodents, primates) A highly comprehensive and completely up-to-date reference on vertebrate evolution, Vertebrate Palaeontology is an ideal learning aid for palaeontology courses in biology and geology departments. The text is also highly valuable to enthusiasts who want to experience the flavour of how modern research in the field is conducted.
