Book excerpt: "Where's the Gift?" employs a simple story backed by years of research and real world experience to demonstrate the incredible power of feedback. The authors explain why the most dangerous feedback is no feedback at all, and provide a step-by-step process that individuals can use to get the timely feedback they need to achieve their goals. The authors also explain why the ability to capitalize on feedback, in all its forms, will do more to drive success than IQ, education, or talent. Readers will learn how to discover the gift in ALL feedback, even when that feedback is vague, inaccurate, unfair, or poorly delivered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectacularly dramatic memoir of a woman whose curiosity about the world led her from rural Canada to imperiled and dangerous countries on every continent, and then into fifteen months of harrowing captivity in Somalia—a story of courage, resilience, and extraordinary grace. The dramatic and redemptive memoir of a woman whose curiosity led her to the world’s most beautiful and remote places, its most imperiled and perilous countries, and then into fifteen months of harrowing captivity—an exquisitely written story of courage, resilience, and grace As a child, Amanda Lindhout escaped a violent household by paging through issues of National Geographic and imagining herself in its exotic locales. At the age of nineteen, working as a cocktail waitress in Calgary, Alberta, she began saving her tips so she could travel the globe. Aspiring to understand the world and live a significant life, she backpacked through Latin America, Laos, Bangladesh, and India, and emboldened by each adventure, went on to Sudan, Syria, and Pakistan. In war-ridden Afghanistan and Iraq she carved out a fledgling career as a television reporter. And then, in August 2008, she traveled to Somalia—“the most dangerous place on earth.” On her fourth day, she was abducted by a group of masked men along a dusty road. Held hostage for 460 days, Amanda converts to Islam as a survival tactic, receives “wife lessons” from one of her captors, and risks a daring escape. Moved between a series of abandoned houses in the desert, she survives on memory—every lush detail of the world she experienced in her life before captivity—and on strategy, fortitude, and hope. When she is most desperate, she visits a house in the sky, high above the woman kept in chains, in the dark, being tortured. Vivid and suspenseful, as artfully written as the finest novel, A House in the Sky is the searingly intimate story of an intrepid young woman and her search for compassion in the face of unimaginable adversity.

Book Synopsis Shale gas by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Energy and Climate Change Committee
Download or read book Shale gas written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Energy and Climate Change Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the impact shale gas drilling in the UK could have on water supplies, energy security and greenhouse gas emissions. The inquiry found no evidence that the hydraulic fracturing process involved in shale gas extraction - known as 'fracking' - poses a direct risk to underground water aquifers provided the drilling well is constructed properly. The MPs, nevertheless, urge the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to monitor drilling activity extremely closely in its early stages in order to assess its impact on air and water quality. Shale gas extraction could reduce the UK's dependence on imported gas, but it is unlikely to have a dramatic effect on domestic gas prices. The UK's onshore and, particularly, offshore shale gas resources could be substantial and the development of the offshore shale gas industry in the UK should be encouraged. Greenhouse gas emissions from gas are lower than from coal, but are still much higher than many low-carbon technologies. The presence of methane in shale gas, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide, has raised concerns. However, methane would only be released through leaks from the well or pipelines and the MPs are confident that this can be easily minimised through regulation and enforcement. Shale gas could reduce carbon dioxide emissions globally by encouraging a switch from coal to gas for electricity generation, but it will not be sufficient to meet long term emissions reductions targets and avoid the worst effects of global climate disruption.
Download or read book Die Smiling written by Julie Casson and published by Haythorp Books. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen in national newspapers "A searingly honest tale of love, life and death" – Sarah Wootton, Dignity in Dying Die Smiling is a rare and intimate account of one man’s journey to Dignitas in Zurich and his ultimate triumph over suffering and disease. Told with wit and candour, Julie Casson traces her husband Nigel’s extraordinary journey from diagnosis of motor neurone disease to his death. A successful businessman and father of three, Nigel battles the degenerative disease with boundless courage and gritty good humour, until, faced with the unimaginable torture of a slow, living death – his spirit crushed, his body a tomb – he takes control. He decides to go to Dignitas to end his life, while he is still able to die smiling. The family prepares for this enormous logistical and emotional challenge: the gruelling Dignitas process and the 800-mile road trip to Switzerland. They complete it with pragmatism and humour. Denying motor neurone disease its victory and choosing his own cure, Nigel dies happily, in the arms of his wife and children. This is a thought-provoking and deeply moving book, where love, family, dignity and choice conquer adversity. It sits in the heart of the debate on assisted dying and raises questions about the right to put an end to suffering and the right to choose how life should end. As Britain considers introducing an assisted dying bill, Die Smiling allows supporters of both sides of the debate to go inside a family battling a terminal illness and the difficult journey an individual and close relatives and friends go through at the end of life. It is a frank and loving memoir that explains the reality of MND's cruel symptoms and the experience of going to Dignitas. Written with the tenderness of With the End in Mind and the joy of Dr Rachel Clarke's Dear Life, this book has stayed in the minds of readers: an intimate portrait of a family loving life and united in death. Although Die Smiling is a personal memoir and definitely not a campaign book, its publication has been welcomed by Sarah Wootton, CEO of Dignity in Dying, as an important contribution to the debate on assisted dying. 'Julie Casson lays bare the devastating human impact of the UK’s ban on assisted dying, capturing precisely why true choice at the end of life is a movement whose time has come for this country. By turns uplifting and heart-wrenching, Die Smiling is a searingly honest tale of love, life and death, and a powerful contribution to a historic debate.' – Sarah Wootton, CEO Dignity in Dying

Book excerpt: The series continues . . . With Megan all alone . . . She must find her maker and complete her journey into the unknown. In order for Megan to be free, she must complete what her enemies have started. The force shot me backward as the kick pushed me through the door to a back room. I regained control of my stance through the splintered mess and noticed something crouched down and moving in a corner. Once I turned my head to gaze upon it, I could instantly recognize it was another girl. She was topless, tied up, sweaty, and looked like she had been crying. I looked back down the hall and saw him trying to regain his footing. I did not give a damn that she was not a part of my mission; she must had been abused. “Wipe my ass, you nasty, child-stealing bastard!” I shouted out loud. He had blood dripping from his lips, and he grunted as sweat dripped from his brow.
