Born with a degenerative eye disease that left him blind by the age of thirty, Alan Pickering was not going to let this stop him becoming a leader in the world of pensions, winning 'Greatest Single Contribution to Occupational Pensions (1998–2017)' at the Professional Pensions UK Pension Awards. His achievements, however, were not solely limited to the highly technical world of pensions. A lifelong fan of horse racing, Pickering has become a keen racehorse owner himself, and was honoured to be elected a vice-president of the Racehorse Owners Association. Throughout his life he has never let his lack of sight hold him back, and he maintained a strong passion for athletics – participating in competitive race walking and running numerous marathons over the years. In Look Where You're Going Paddy Briggs uncovers the very human story behind a man best known for the Pickering Report, commissioned by the Blair government. From interviews with friends and family as well as conversations with Alan himself, he reveals a man whose intellect and amiable nature allowed him to push his disability to one side to succeed on his own terms.

Book excerpt: Search computing, which has evolved from service computing, focuses on building the answers to complex search queries by interacting with a constellation of cooperating search services, using the ranking and joining of results as the dominant factors for service composition. The field is multi-disciplinary in nature and takes advantage of contributions from other research areas such as knowledge representation, human-computer interfaces, psychology, sociology, economics, and legal sciences. This book, the second in the Search Computing series, describes the evolution of theories, technologies, and methods related to search computing. The book has been divided into eight parts, reflecting the main research directions within the Search Computing project. The parts focus on: search as an information exploration task; interaction design issues when dealing with multi-domain search results; modeling and semantic description of search services; the rank-join problem; query processing techniques and architectures; tools and mashups for application development; the application of search computing to bio-informatics; and the exploitation potentials of project results.

He cried for help, but those who heard him either didn't or couldn't help him. They prayed for him, but the poor man couldn't get out until one day a brother came along who jumped down into the hole too. The man in the hole said, "Brother, why did you jump down here? Now you are stuck down here with me." But the brother said, "I jumped down here because I was in this hole not too long ago, and I know a secret way out."" William Bradley was once the man in the hole. Now free, he offers to lend a strong hand to others with "Look Where He Brought Me From." Bradley grew up in New York, spending all his money on fast cars and faster women-and then he caught his big break in the late sixties NYC music scene. With the hard partying and easy money, Bradley seemed destined for an early grave like so many talented, promising young people. Then he started listening to the messages God had been sending him throughout his life. Now in his seventieth year and the prime of his life, Bradley reflects on how the blessing and favor of the Lord let him overcome his many obstacles, and how through following the path God has set for us, we can find success without sacrificing our dreams.

Book excerpt: When tragedy strikes, a young mother's friends and family ensure she is never alone... Joan Jonker's saga, Home is Where the Heart Is, brings to life a close-knit Liverpudlian community, in the final instalment of the Eileen Gillmoss series. Perfect for fans of Katie Flynn and Dilly Court. 'Warm, witty... loved by her legions of fans' - Liverpool Echo When fun-loving, eighteen-stone Eileen Gillmoss announces that she's expecting a baby, her husband Bill thinks it's another one of her jokes. After all, it's twelve years since Edna, their youngest, was born. But when it sinks in that a baby really is on the way, Bill is over the moon and decides that the family should move out of their two-up, two-down house in Liverpool to one with more spacious accommodation. Eileen digs her heels in at first, reluctant to leave the house she loves and friends and neighbours so dear. But a scare early in Eileen's pregnancy strengthens Bill's resolve to provide a more comfortable home for his wife. Before Eileen knows what's hit her, she's installed in a smart home with posh new neighbours. Then tragedy strikes and Eileen must come to terms with a loss far greater than leaving behind her beloved neighbourhood. She tries to put on a brave face, but she can't fool the people who love her, who miss the smile on that round, chubby face and the laughter ringing through her house. They vow to make amends and fate steps in to lend a helping hand... What readers are saying about Home is Where the Heart Is: 'From the first page you are drawn into this wonderful woman's life and family as if you belong there. Joan Jonker creates a web of family crises and tragedies mixed with the never flagging spirit of Eileen Gilmoss to keep you hungry for more' 'As always with Joan it's a mix of hard, nitty, gritty life and fun thrown into the mix, never a dull moment with her books, tears of woe one minute and laughter the next'

Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of The Peep Diaries and Hello, I'm Special returns to fiction, and delivers a mind-altering collection of short stories that confront the hypocrisies, humiliations and hilarities of modern life. The foibles of the 21st-century ego are on full view in this romp through social conventions—imaginative, offbeat stories that confront society's intractable dilemmas and deftly capture the zeitgeist of our fractured times. *An undergraduate gets in way over his head when a class assignment to start a terrorist organization goes viral *A pregnant 10th-grader struggles with her fetus's insistence that she abort him before both their lives are ruined. *A man trying to come to terms with the death of a friend becomes obsessed with a funeral home's online braodcasts. *A mortgage broker gets lost between the Web and the real world in pursuit of a pornography-induced fantasy. Look Down, This is Where It Must Have Happened is a biting satire of nostalgia, a send-up of the way highschool-era friendships can permanently choke off the possibility of adulthood. "Witty and wise."—San Francisco Chronicle "An equally gifted fiction writer and social critic."—Tikkun "There's tons of talent here."—NOW Magazine "Hal Niedzviecki is a remarkable writer."—Margot Livesey, author of The House on Fortune Street

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents three studies in which eye tracking data were collected at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen in June and July 2013. Overall, the results of those three studies highlight the knowledge gained from the analysis of the very first saccade in a museum context, when people look at paintings and statues. The first study analyzes how viewers orient their first saccade on paintings. This study shows that, in a museum, the first saccade is attracted toward the center of paintings. This attraction toward the paintings’ center is found in all the subjects’ groups that we have studied. Noteworthily, this effect is significantly less pronounced in individuals who never visit museums. It is among amateurs, who often visit museums, that the center attracts the most the first saccade. Among experts, painters or art history teachers, and to a lesser extent among amateurs, the pictorial composition largely determines the orientation of the first saccade. We indeed found that, as soon as the first saccade, experts orient their gaze toward the main subject. This phenomenon seems to be explained by the fact that experts immediately orient their gaze (here measured as the first saccade) toward the paintings’ location conveying the most meaning. It can either be the center, or a peripheral area, depending on whether the paintings’ most meaningful subject is located centrally or peripherally. The second study shows that the center does not attract the first saccade in 5-year-old children. This behavior appears later, in 8- to 10-year-old children. However, noticeably, the 8–10-year-old children orient significantly less frequently their first saccade toward the paintings’ center as adults do, and this is also true when one considers non-expert adult viewers. The results of the third study focus on statues and reveal a very different oculomotor behavior: Indeed, rather than looking at the center, statues’ viewers exhibit a clear tendency to saccade first at the statues’ contours. This stands in contrast with the behavior that we observe with paintings. Our study concludes that statues trigger a specific oculomotor behavior. The latter appears to be mostly driven by the physical presence that stone bodies incarnate. The movement and the climax of this movement, that sculptors manage to convey, thus turn out to attract the gaze in a unique fashion. The book concludes that the first saccade is a powerful indicator of the oculomotor behavior that greatly improves our comprehension of the unique relationship between a viewer and artworks.
