In this clear and engaging basic guide to managing your finances, you will learn: - How to trick your dumb brain into saving more, without giving up fun - How to make a bona fide grown-up budget - Why you need to forget what you've learned about credit - How to negotiate a raise - Why buying a house (probably) won't make you rich - The one super-simple investment you need With helpful exercises, informative illustrations (also: kittens) and straightforward advice, this book doesn't shy away from the psychology of money, and is empowering, humorous and helpful. Book excerpt: About the Book Everything Changed is a story about the wild, violent early days of southwest desert dope smuggling via the then innovative use of light aircraft. It depicts how huge profits were used to corrupt some cops, particularly local cops stuck in a dead-end job. The story also explores how the federal special agents of the then U.S. Customs Service worked clandestinely to disrupt and dismantle smuggling enterprises. The book is set in barren southern New Mexico right on the dangerous international border and it showcases how air smuggling and money transportation actually worked, how Mexican traffickers and their enforcers operated, and how a local family facing marriage problems could become unintended players and victims in the damage that narcotics trafficking always brings. This story is unique in that much of it is reality that has been gleaned from many different narcotics and dirty money and firearms trafficking cases that the author, a retired US Customs Special Agent, actually witnessed and investigated. The smuggling, trafficking and investigative techniques are genuine, and the story, although completely fiction, is realistic as it’s built and compiled from the author’s (and his colleagues’) experiences and participation. About the Author Ken Cates is the retired Special Agent in Charge, Department of Homeland Security-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, having served 34 years as a criminal investigator with ICE, U.S. Customs and ATF. His personal knowledge of firearms, narcotics and currency smuggling cases from Los Angeles to the Caribbean and up and down the U.S./Mexico border have made him a recognized expert in international cross-border contraband smuggling casework. Ken also served as a U.S. Army-Military Intelligence Specialist and as an Operational Law Enforcement/Border Ops Subject Matter Expert with a U.S. Army Special Missions Unit in the Global War on Terror. These days, he writes fiction, lives in the country outside of Dallas, with his Nurse Practitioner wife and his five daughters nearby. He also ranches, does specialty trial consulting, and assesses internal security matters for a variety of corporate clients.

Constantly in flight from the authorities, he still has time for romantic adventures. Yet, this vagabond is not all bad. While in the midst of his exploits, he makes time to succor the helpless and bring joy to the joyless. Pig's Court America is a comedic examination of society's wayward economic system and mores that offers a running social commentary. This includes an exploration of our misplaced materialism, and its results.

Book excerpt: No Face by emerging writer Brandon Krogel is a ten-year memoir, spanning the stunning second decade of his life. He describes the events of that decade, many of which intensely tragic, with self-deprecating humor and a great deal of insight, making No Face a soulful read. It is a story of loss, trauma, defeat, and, in the end, of resiliency and triumph of the human spirit. Margaret Atwood wrote that writing has to do with a desire, or even a compulsion to enter something dark, and to bring that darkness out to the light. Krogel has done just that. He has entered the darkness of depression, loss, and addiction, and he has illuminated it for us, his readers, bringing out into the light experiences that are extraordinary. Book excerpt: Mathew Abernathy had all that life offered. He had wealth, a stunningly beautiful wife, and a healthy, energetic young daughter. Life was good. Everything seemed fine. But things were not what they seemed. Abused as a child, he blocked out the reality of his torment, his shame. He lived life through the lens of fantasy. The nightmares started early and got progressively worse as he approached puberty. After starting his own family, his descent into darkness begins. Slowly, his life fades into a violent world in which he lives out fantasies based on his character in nightmares. The nightmares have become so real he believes the life he’s known since childhood, the life he suppressed, never existed. His personality changes as physical evidence suggests he is acting out in real life his nightmare character role. He kills his first victim while in what he believes to be a nightmare, but news reports force him to realize he may have done it for real. Confused and desperate for answers, he becomes more detached from reality. As time goes on, he is less capable of distinguishing what is real and seeks professional help from a psychiatrist, an old family friend. The doctor misdiagnoses his condition and the treatments make matters worse. Soon, Mathew loses control and gives in to his most primal instincts. Unable to control the transformation, he embraces the idea that he, in fact, is a murderous villain and abandons his real life along with everyone in it. Would Mathew make it back to his real world? Would there be anyone who wanted him to get back? Mathew finds himself king in one of the most vicious neighborhoods of the city. Feared by all, yet respected by none, his list of enemies grow. Driven by a fury he can no longer control, he kills, randomly, brutally, without remorse. Mathew fully embraces his new life, when suddenly his nightmare world slowly unravels and the struggle for reality starts all over again. His enemies notice the change and become emboldened by his waning ability to defend himself. What will happen to Mathew? Will he succumb to his enemies? Will anyone from his past even care? Stuck between two worlds again, Mathew becomes a victim of his own existence. Captured by an unknown enemy, a disguised voice for which there is no face. He is alone, tormented, and held to account for sins he no longer remembers. In the end, Mathew comes face to face with the one enemy he had not accounted for. Can he survive?

A nubile young actress wrestles with an aging Hollywood star for the affections of a renowned novelist. And everyone discovers just how disappointing love, art, and growing up can be. In this irreverent, contemporary, and very funny remix of Chekhov’s The Seagull, Aaron Posner stages a timeless battle between young and old, past and present, in search of the true meaning of it all. Original songs composed by James Sugg draw the famously subtextual inner thoughts of Chekhov’s characters explicitly to the surface. STUPID FUCKING BIRD will tickle, tantalize, and incite you to consider how art, love, and revolution fuel your own pursuit of happiness.

Mongoose, who is in charge of the gaming activities for the Desert Winds Hotel and Casino, the last holdout of the “Mob”, works for Frank Rothman the “Wizard of Odds” and Ignacio Baldacci or Balsy, reunites with Eunice who has become a successful showgirl under the name of Venus. At first she ignores him but softens after he is almost killed in a car bombing. As their relationship develops Mongoose is haunted by her prior connection with Tommy DiMeglio who he must deal with, and “make his bones”, as he was responsible for the car bombing. The novel concludes with the partnership between the Desert Winds and Stanley Ho, the richest man in Asia to establish The Pacific Winds in time for the new millennium in the Year of The Dragon.

Book excerpt: No Drug deal is worth dying for, was the first rule of the street that I chose to call a Street Smart rule and was one of ten informal rules which guided me through a career as a Federal Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In my book Breakfast in Kersey I detail these ten rules, the Street Smarts, that I deduced from actual street experience and incorporated them with anecdotal incidents which traced the highs and lows of my Special Agent career. In tracing my long career, the many facets of drug law enforcement are exposed; from the exciting and dangerous work of undercover to the rather mundane tasks such as long-term surveillance. Additionally, the highs and lows of a federal narcotics career are examined from the thrill of making a big seizure or arrest to the heartbreaking hardships that this job has on a family and personal life. And fi nally, I off er insights at the frustrations of the job such as inane policies and procedures established by a higher headquarters that tended to hinder investigations and, at times, agent safety to the petty bickering that existed between local, state and federal agencies over drug and or money seizures and jurisdiction. Interwoven into these facets are anecdotes, both humorous and sad but every one of them real allowing a keen insight as to what it was really like to toil in the realm of narcotics enforcement.

Al's story raises questions that aren't typically asked by the aforementioned professionals; and the reader is subtly invited to answer them in a way that will shine the Light into the darkest of corners.

Book excerpt: A law-student stripper, two inept hitmen, the First Church of Elvis, Scientist, and a small-time mobster's biggest scam. Things are about to get all shook up in this hilarious novel filled with explosions, attempted murder, intrigue, and a whole lot more. Indescribable…except…in a word. FUNNY. PRAISE FOR MIKE ARGENTO & DON'T BE CRUEL “It’s an understatement to say that Mike Argento is a funny writer. His wit unfolds across every character, scene and scenario of ‘Don't Be Cruel.’ Virtually every page elicits grins and frequent gut-busting laughs. I’ll never sit in a church pew again without looking at the altar and imagining the worship service at the First Church of Elvis, Scientist.” - Mike Leonard, columnist, The Herald Times, Bloomington, Ind. “Who would've thunk Mike Argento had it in him to write anything as consistently funny, profane and gratuitously outrageous as ‘Don't Be Cruel?’ If Spew, Nunn, ‘Traci with an I,’ the First Church of Elvis, Scientist and the whole crew don't put you in cracked ribbed territory early and often, well, you might as well tie a tag around your own big toe and go work for Rick Santorum. This is a deeply American tragicomedy, rooted in postmodern sensibility, insouciant nihilism and hillbilly smarminess. There's even a little sweetness stabbing around the contours of its narrative heart, which beats as solidly as anything this side of St. Vonnegut. It races along like those early Elvis Costello records, pulling you by the throat into some pretty dark corners thanks to its irresistible rhythms. Argento delights in kicking us in the balls while proclaiming his undying love.” - Tony Norman, columnist, Pittsburgh Post Gazette “In his first novel, the delightfully goofy ‘Don't Be Cruel,’ Mike Argento proves once again he's a twisted bastard with a heart of gold. This crime caper novel is filled with classic Argento observations of true life absurdities that devoted readers of his columns (and there are more than a few of us) will immediately recognize and appreciate. He’ll hate me for saying it, but his sentimental side is on fine display in ‘Don't Be Cruel.’ As I have done countless times, I'm simultaneously shaking my head head wondering, ‘What the hell is wrong with that boy?’ as I'm smiling and thinking, ‘Awwwwww.’” - Lauri Lebo, author, “The Devil in Dover: An Insider's Account of Darwin v Dogma in Small Town America” "Bizarre, clever and full of pitch black humor, ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ is one hell of a debut novel! Argento's voice, prose, and wit are sharp as razors." - Brian Keene, bestselling author of “Ghoul” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town” "Mike wrote a book?" - Jack Mayer, postal worker, musician

Book excerpt: Cooper Glover and Will Carter wake up in a hut in Vietnam with no recollection of how they got there. They soon find themselves trapped in the chaotic web of the CIA's Black Ops division. The deeper they dive into the world of undercover CIA officers, the more they question the motives of their superiors and whether or not they are responsible for the very problems in America they claim to be combating. They eventually take on a protégé, Miguel Cortez, an orphan with ties to the same Mexican drug cartel doing business with the CIA. All three embark on a path of redemption spanning decades. Keeping them under the company's thumb is their mysterious handler, Adam Truman. Truman proves he is willing to stop at nothing to control his officers, going after their loved ones, and even their very sanity to bend them to his will. When Coop and Carter are no longer willing to toe the company line, they rage against the machine. Coop goes to desperate lengths to protect his family from becoming collateral damage while Carter dives deep into the underworld they inhabit, becoming a more successful criminal than an officer. Miguel follows their influence and escapes the company for the world of Hollywood fixers, rubbing elbows with rockstars, before being forced to pay a debt to his former employer. All three men are placed in close proximity to events that change the course of human history. Cruel fate, a relentless Adam Truman, and the continuous fallout from the chain of events they find themselves trapped in, impact not only their lives, but the entire world.
