Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the zombie become such a pervasive figure in twenty-first-century popular culture? John Vervaeke, Christopher Mastropietro and Filip Miscevic seek to answer this question by arguing that particular aspects of the zombie, common to a variety of media forms, reflect a crisis in modern Western culture. The authors examine the essential features of the zombie, including mindlessness, ugliness and homelessness, and argue that these reflect the outlook of the contemporary West and its attendant zeitgeists of anxiety, alienation, disconnection and disenfranchisement. They trace the relationship between zombies and the theme of secular apocalypse, demonstrating that the zombie draws its power from being a perversion of the Christian mythos of death and resurrection. Symbolic of a lost Christian worldview, the zombie represents a world that can no longer explain itself, nor provide us with instructions for how to live within it. The concept of 'domicide' or the destruction of home is developed to describe the modern crisis of meaning that the zombie both represents and reflects. This is illustrated using case studies including the relocation of the Anishinaabe of the Grassy Narrows First Nation, and the upheaval of population displacement in the Hellenistic period. Finally, the authors invoke and reformulate symbols of the four horseman of the apocalypse as rhetorical analogues to frame those aspects of contemporary collapse that elucidate the horror of the zombie. Zombies in Western Culture: A Twenty-First Century Crisis is required reading for anyone interested in the phenomenon of zombies in contemporary culture. It will also be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience including students and scholars of culture studies, semiotics, philosophy, religious studies, eschatology, anthropology, Jungian studies, and sociology.

Book excerpt: Zombies have plagued humanity's nightmares for centuries, but fortunately, the scientific community has created this detailed and completely serious guide to the undead. Only Zombies of the World tackles this issue and many more, so you might want to read up before a zombie tackles you! Zombies menace humanity, yet we barely understand them. There are books that show you how to kill the undead, but this is the first field guide to explain the importance of zombies to us. Zombies of the World reveals the undead to be a valuable part of our ecosystem and the key to new discoveries in medicine and technology. Zombies of the World uses captivating illustrations to document how evolution has led to a wide variety of species. Few outside the scientific community even realize that creatures like the Egyptian Mummy (Mortifera mumia aegyptus) are actually zombies. Some species are even harmless to humans. The Dancing Zombie (Mortifera immortalis choreographicus) only seeks to thrill humans with elaborate dance routines. Discover how our history has been affected by the undead and what we can learn from “scientific” research. The answer might surprise you!

An epidemic is sweeping Great Britain, transforming countless victims into mindless predators and forcing Matt and his little brother, Danny, out of the safety of their late parents’ privileged legacy and into a rapidly changing world. Every day is vital. Every action counts. As the brothers make alliances and learn to defend themselves and their home against an unthinkable enemy, choices are made, some with devastating consequences. In the midst of this nightmarish fight to survive, Matt begins to learn what is truly important to him, and exactly what it means to be human. Bursting with Craig Jones’ signature swift pacing and squirm inducing details, this is a story destined for your library. Review This story is clearly written by not just a fan of the genre but also someone who knows what makes it tick. What we get here is a personal drama set around a zombie outbreak, and this is something that really adds to the power of the story and something that I would recommend to any reader of zombie fiction as we witness the mental journey and torment of our key protagonist. 4 Stars. –Zombiepedia.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden inside each of us, buried deep in our DNA are remnants of code from ancient viral infections. Scientists call these pieces of code fossil viruses. Usually this code lies harmlessly inert in a species, and over successive generations, mutations further reduce its capacity to ever code for what it once was. But what if an embedded viral RNA strand remained dormant and unchanged for millennia, only waiting for the correct missing nucleotide to bring it back to life? Dr. Steven McQuinn lives with his lovely wife, Holly and ten year old son, Jeremy in a quiet suburban home in Maryland. A virologist at the U.S. Army’s Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), he has been on the forefront in studying some of the hottest pathogens on the planet, but nothing has prepared him for what he is about to face. Something that everyone in his field once thought of as impossible has happened–a pandemic has spread instantaneously around the planet infecting most of the world’s population. Worldwide, people are becoming sick and falling into deep comas. Only a few seem to be immune. As McQuinn and the research team at USAMRIID race against time to discover what the mystery pathogen is and how it could have infected an entire planet so quickly, the laboratory becomes progressively isolated from the outside world. News stations drop off the air and the team loses contact with outside resources; they are on their own in this seemingly insurmountable fight. It appears that a Pandora’s Box has been opened, unleashing a mindless evil upon mankind. Even USAMRIID is not isolated from the disease and the infection quickly rages through the staff like an out of control wildfire. The real horror reveals itself when the infected awaken from their comas with a virus-ravaged brain that harbors an insatiable fury. The infected are now no more than enraged rabid animals that savagely attack with deadly intent. Forced to leave the facility, Steven rushes home to his family through the post-apocalyptical landscape that has befallen the world. They set out on the road to find sanctuary in the country. Meeting up with other uninfected survivors the growing group will have to fight their way through hordes of infected as they discover that no place is really safe. No matter how prepared you are, how cautious you try to be, your best laid plans are not enough to protect you from the Zombie Virus.
