Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a researcher whose work focuses largely on the causes and conse quences of unwanted pregnancy, I may appear to be an unlikely candidate to write a foreword to a book on infertility. Yet, many of the themes that emerge in the study of unwanted pregnancy are also apparent in the study of infertility. Moreover, this volume is an important contribution to the literature on fertility, women's health issues, and health psychology in general, all topics with which I have been closely involved over the past two decades. Neither pregnancy nor its absence is inherently desirable: The occurrence of a pregnancy can be met with joy or despair, and its absence can be a cause of relief or anguish. Whether or not these states are wanted, the conscious and unconscious meanings attached to pregnancy and in fertility, the responses of others, the perceived implications of these states, and one's expectations for the future all are critical factors in determining an individual's response. In addition, both unwanted pregnancy and failure to conceive can be socially stigmatized, evoking both overt and subtle social disapproval. Fur ther, they involve not only the woman, but her partner, and potentially the extended family. Finally, both of these reproductive issues have been poorly researched. Because both are emotionally charged and socially stigmatized events, they are difficult to study. Much of the early literature relied on anecdotal or case reports.

By now you've more than likely cried, screamed, and asked a million times, "God, why?" You may even be experiencing feelings of hopelessness, alienation, shame, and anger. Infertility strikes at the core of what it means to be a woman or man, tests marriages, and shakes faith. Learning I was infertile damaged my self-esteem and left me feeling embarrassed, isolated, and, above all, brokenhearted. I would spend months grieving the dream of the child I always wanted but couldn't have. I was angry at God and the world. I discovered infertility had not only impaired me physically but mentally and spiritually as well. In short, it was destroying my life. Through God's grace, I overcame. There is life, healing, and victory during and after infertility. After reading this book, I pray that God renews your faith and hope in His word as you learn to patiently wait on His promises to be fulfilled. Infertility no longer has to be a tabooed subject amongst family and friends. Trusting in the Lord will give you confidence to openly discuss your hopes for a family with close friends and relatives. And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. --Luke 18: 27

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all new mothers experience some apprehension about the transition to parenthood, but some women's symptoms reach the point of meeting diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder. Indeed, new research suggests that in the perinatal period-which includes both pregnancy and the first year postpartum-some types of anxiety are more common than depression. The time is ripe to integrate and evaluate the research on anxiety disorders that occur at this stage of life. This book describes the various ways in which perinatal anxiety is expressed in women, as well as approaches for assessment and treatment. The first half of the book describes the five main types of perinatal anxiety-worry and generalized anxiety, obsessions and compulsions, panic attacks, social anxiety, and childbirth-related fear and trauma-and presents a biopsychosocial model. Chapters in this half discuss the nature, prevalence, and effects of each anxiety disorder, comorbidity between perinatal anxiety and perinatal depression, and risk factors for perinatal anxiety. The second half of the book covers the assessment and treatment of perinatal anxiety, including pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychoeducation, and self-help resources. All of the chapters draw extensively from the research literature, and engaging case studies bring the material to life throughout the book. This volume will be a tremendous resource for clinical psychologists, counselors, obstetricians, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, and others who work with pregnant and postpartum women, as well as researchers and graduate students in any of these fields.
