Book excerpt: Slocum’s left high and dry… Dehydration, Wyoming, lives up to its name. Slocum sees water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink—since a local magnate built a dam, hoarding all the agua for himself. Desperate, the local law offers five grand to anyone who can bring in water. When a buxom señorita shows up with her divining rod, Slocum wets his whistle with what she’s offering, while giving the local water-hog an ultimatum: share the liquid—or swallow lead…

Book excerpt: Independent philosopher Lee (recently of the U. of Manchester) attends to the deeper implications of ecologically insensitive technology beyond its polluting effects. Contrasting modern with premodern worldviews provides the context for exploring how new sciences like biotechnology require an expanded environmental ethos encompassing both the biotic and the abiotic. The author considers misconceived the notions of nature as either a work of art or a mere social construct per some postmodern thinking. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: I am recalling the years after the Second World War, my time as a Prisoner of War and my later migration as an unskilled labourer to Australia. Especially for the younger generations I also include some historical background.I shall take you back to pre-war Germany, to prison camps in England; recall my migration to Australia and later as an Australian Accountant to South Africa, with a final return to Germany. Coming from a Hamburg Taxation Department, I chose a radical change of life to first become a construction labourer, then a miner, and later a stockman, before I went back to town to become Office Manager and later qualified as an Accountant (A.A.S.A. and C.P.A.). I met many different people in the outback of Australia, in offices and head offices in Adelaide, Durban and in Germany and of course, socially in lodges and as friends in the many places where we (my wife and I) came to stay for a few days or perhaps years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calls for redress of historical wrongs regularly make headlines around the world. People dispute the degree to which justice should be concerned with righting past wrongs, with some arguing that justice should be primarily focused on claims arising from present disadvantage. Proponents and sceptics of restitution, compensation, and other forms of historical redress have engaged with the thesis that historical injustice can be superseded, the idea that changing circumstances following historical injustices can alter what justice later requires. The “supersession thesis,” developed by legal and political philosopher Jeremy Waldron, has been challenged, both conceptually and in terms of its possible application and implications. This is the first book to critically assess how the supersession thesis might be reconstructed, challenged, or applied to empirical cases, with an eye toward larger questions surrounding the temporal orientation of justice. Cases examined include Indigenous peoples, linguistic injustice, and climate change. The edited volume includes contributions by established and junior scholars from philosophy, law, American Indian Studies, and political science, who draw from Indigenous thought, settler colonial theory, liberalism, theories of historical entitlements, and structural injustice theories. It concludes with a reply by Jeremy Waldron. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.
