Book excerpt: When the Road Beckons' is an inspiring odyssey that promises to transform a generation. Drawing parallels between a precarious journey across Ladakh and Life, the author has shown that it is 'uncertainty' from which the evils of fear and lethargy emanates, that stop us from listening to our true calling. Taking cues from his own struggle and journey, the author explains the need for experiential learning in our lives; how we can balance rational and intuitive thinking, and goes deep into the values of love, creativity, entrepreneurship and the concept of risk that is associated with it. 'When the Road Beckons' is a remarkable story of a metamorphic motorcycle journey that leads to self discovery. It's a story that will take you to that one person whom you are quite eager to discover. And that person is You.

Winding through the rugged heartland of the American West, Route 66 has resonated for generations in hardscrabble tales of hopeful seekers of new homes and new lives. It also inspired Alan and Claudia Heller, longtime residents of Duarte, a California town along Route 66, to hitch their trailer to a retirement dream and travel the road again, journeying through their home state and back to Chicago. They collected stories of the iconic highway, and what it means to the people who live along its way, for a series in the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group. This collection retraces their journey and introduces us to some of the people and places that make Route 66 truly historic.

Book Synopsis Hobbema and Heidegger by : Rivca Gordon
Download or read book Hobbema and Heidegger written by Rivca Gordon and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the beautiful landscape paintings of Meindert Hobbema, a seventeenth-century painter of the Dutch Golden Age, are in accord with the thought of Martin Heidegger, a twentieth-century philosopher, on beauty and truth. Since little is known about Hobbema's life, this work concentrates on ideas that are central to Heidegger's philosophy of art and beauty and the way these ideas are attuned to Hobbema's landscapes. Heidegger holds that the beauty of a great work of art calls out from that work and is firmly linked to the disclosure of hidden truths concerning essences of beings. This book illustrates in detail that beauty and such truths indeed call out from Hobbema's paintings.

Download or read book Far Horizons written by Andrew Earnshaw and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stalked by a black bear, encountering a close shave with a bull buffalo, having his tent eaten by an elk and being mugged by a gang of racoons; these are just a few of the adventures the author experiences as he attempts to circumnavigate North America by motorcycle in 2009. In doing so he discovers a land and two countries that feature a number of different divides – political, national, cultural and geographical. The early chapters describe the minimal planning that took place and the doubts that hit him when he begins his journey, finding his motorcycle impounded by US Customs, but then gradually transform with the release of the bike into a classic road trip as he delves down the Appalachians into Alabama, meeting kindred spirits from the biking world on the way and warming mile by mile into a deep appreciation of the splendour of the landscape and the warmth of the inhabitants. Later into the journey he travels through the First Nation reservations and looks into the history surrounding the demise of the Great Plains culture, describing the victory of the Sioux and their allies at Little Bighorn then the massacre at Wounded Knee, meeting descendants of those involved. The book is light-hearted and written in the spirit of gentle adventure by someone who admits to being a ‘pretty slow rider’ and a navigational incompetent to boot. If he manages to get back to Baltimore it will be a small miracle and hopefully, by the time he gets there, he will have finally found out what the ‘Great Divide’ really is.
